The game has really turned around. I played for a couple weeks back at the launch, and it was terrible -- mainly a narrow metagame with few viable 'mechs and a pay-to-win model that begged for money every five minutes. I came back in mid 2019 and all of that had been fixed. Now there's a very large selection of 'mechs to choose from, with very few of them being invalidated by a strictly better 'mech, and I've been able to put together a pretty filled out 'mechbay without spending any actual money. The pay-to-win has been cut back significantly, and the premium currency is handed out in semi-decent amounts with every event.

Overall it plays great. You really get the feeling that you're in a 75 ton giant stompy robot. Unlike a lot of games the time-to-kill is rather long which forces the player to use strategy as much as mechanical skill, which feels pretty fresh if you're used to higher speed shooters. The customization options for 'mechs is also pretty great, especially if you're into the BattleTech universe.
