Multiplayer is a nightmare in this version, hybrid weapons are deleted upon connecting to a multiplayer match (a serious middle finger to those who farmed those famed weapons in the original) and the inventory got needlessly updated.

The only good thing about this version of the game is the FOV slider.

Sony has still not relisted this game in the countries it was initially de-listed in, and now they are no longer selling Ghost of Tsushima in those same countries. Sony pulled a fast one on the community and they ate it up like candy.

Additionally, this game is being balanced by the dev who ruined and then abandoned Hello Neighbor 2 a month before its release.

Between toxic community managers (except Twinbeard, he's cool) treating the fanbase like dirt and accusing people of heinous crimes without proof, I can't in good faith recommend buying this game at this point in time.

Game was fun, but if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to deal with on a technical side of things this would be a yes instead of no.

This game has the weird habit of starting on the wrong monitor for no apparent reason. This game has also recently started randomly crashing on boot-up and this last time it took Steam with it.

Overall though, the game doesn't know what it wants the player to do, it wants you to be fast and react like it's an FPS game, but makes the controls so unresponsive and clunky it hinders the player from achieving just that.

Wesker is broken in Mercenaries though and is the most fun I had when playing this game.

No new content in years to just release 6 new missions exclusive to PSVR2. No more money from me, great way to throw away all the goodwill of your original backers.

Update as of December 6th 2023:

Having beat all three endings, gotten used to the controls more, unlocked everything... I stand by most of my points still.

The camera I understand more now but it's still terrible.

Energy system is still the worst thing about this game next to the stagger system.

Performance issues still persist since launch, the biggest culprit being the spaceport mission where the Ice Worm shows up.

The Ricochet mechanic sucks, and the ranges of engagement on weapons in this game are not scaled properly to the size and speed of this game.

The camera FOV is a little low and I wish it was like 10-20 degrees higher, but there are mods that can fix that.

I also think the UI is still a cluttered mess that needs a complete overhaul.

My only suggestion is to test out mods, and just use whichever you find the most fun. The vanilla experience is still just a massive letdown.

All in all, I can't recommend this game.


Original Review:

Game runs incredibly poorly, random frame drops of nearly 50-60 frames when any significant action takes place. Controls are probably the worst of any twin stick Armored Core game I've played. The new energy mechanic sucks. The Sekiro stagger mechanic sucks since it's designed around you parrying attacks, and who could have guessed that adding it to a game without a parry system would be a bad thing!

Originally I was on the side of the people who thought this game was going to be nothing like souls. Turns out that was the wrong side to stand on. Why after 15 games they decided to copy the souls camera and movement of all games I will never know. The UI is also a cluttered visual mess with zero customization options.

The only good thing they did with this game is make energy weapons overheat instead of taking energy.

It might be a matter of stating the obvious, but this is a game made for cat lovers, by cat lovers. After beating this game which happens to be a linear experience, albeit enjoyable, I find myself conflicted about running through the game again.

On one hand, I want to play as our fantastic cat more. On the other, I feel like the majority of enjoyment I got out of this game was playing through the story for the first time and immersing myself in the world not knowing anything about it.

Regardless, I feel like this is a fun story based game if you're a cat lover looking to play as a cat and not a whole lot more. Hard to recommend to someone who doesn't like cats.

Is it worth full price for $40? I don't feel like it is. I would wait until it goes on sale for half off at least, and that's coming from someone who's owned many cats over the years.

I saw someone else's review that put my thoughts into words perfectly, so I'll quote them:

"It tries to be a combination of 4 and 7, but they end up cancelling each other out. It's silly, fast paced, and over the top like 4, but you don't get all the fancy roundhouse kicks and abundance of ammo that made that game so fun. It has the limited resources and abilities of 7, but the pace is too fast to let any tension or atmosphere build. It ends up being somewhere between an action game with no action, and a horror game with no horror."

To add, the game has no sense of direction at all, it's like it was designed around knowing where literally everything is to begin with which makes for a very frustrating experience.

July 21st, 2023 EDIT: As of yesterday's patch, or possibly an earlier one this year, Halo 2 co-op is now more functional than it has ever been since its release. Some missions still have stuttering issues at certain load points, but no longer do lobbies hang in the setup screen and boot you back to the lobby, and no longer do they straight up crash your game.

Halo 2 co-op is straight up broken and doesn't work, do not buy it until 343 decides to fix it, which they haven't bothered to since it's been quite a few months since issues with co-op started popping up.

Good port, runs smooth as butter. Gameplay is absolute trash though, Nero's moveset is literally built around a computer playing him. Uninteresting story, uninteresting gameplay, uninteresting main character, half finished game.

Need I go on?

I really only have 3 "complaints" about this game, and those can be solved over time with optimization. Firstly, when I look at the water in survival mode (and probably the other modes) at a certain angle, it flickers rapidly. Secondly, the major FPS dip (like from 60 all the way to 20) you get with firing off smart missile and other weapons at the same time. Lastly, the "jet" streams from the back of your mech, it could just be that it is unfinished at this point of time but the animation seems extremly clunky. Aside from wanting the ability to make my own mech, I enjoy playing this game a lot and I can't wait to see what's next!
