I'm somewhat fond of rogue-lite games, especially FPS ones - so I am glad there's one within the VR space. And especially one that's as polished and slick as this one. If you've tried the demo, and are still not sure like I was when I played it, do note that it's missing certain content from the full version (things like the amount of maps, number of weapons, and different enemy types to name a few) as of 29 August 2021, and so because of this may not provide a faithful and accurate preview of the full experience.

If you're into the genre, and have a VR headset, do yourself a favour and pick this up. Otherwise, at least give it a shot with the free demo. This game is still currently in early access yes, but is feature complete enough to enjoy from start to finish in my opinion. The game is being developed by a single person, so huge kudos to them. This is a strong entry, and considering it's a VR title, is also doing it's part in moving this particular niche forward within the gaming industry.

Recommended, but only if you're into or familiar with rogue-lite style games though, as it's by no means perfect - for the uninitiated this game may seem too shallow, or lacking in content; although to be fair the latter does ring a bit true in this case (perhaps even in the case of any rogue-lite game out there mind you, due to their randomly generated nature, and the fact of the matter being that you can only really be able to experience a limited amount of interesting enough variations until you get the sense that you've already 'been there and done that') and even more so when it comes to the end-game.

There's plenty of permanent upgrades and unlockables you can attain (especially in the early game) for use in subsequent runs after deaths - for those of us who love the small doses of dopamine that they provide our brain's reward system. This slowly tapers off towards the end though; which is to be expected, as the amount of upgrades and rewards in the game are obviously not infinite, and the difficulty ramping up will make it harder to acquire the necessary parts for said upgrades.

The greatest thing about this game for me though, is how the game forces you to adapt and constantly change up how you play on approaching the objectives. Every time I've died, I've learned something new, and that newfound knowledge has then gone into my lexicon for the purposes of developing new strategies towards approaching the levels, enemies and obstacles in ways that I can overcome them more optimally.

Different weapons and utilities are more effective than others when dealing with certain enemies and obstacles, so there's a hint of a rock-paper-scissors design inherent within the gameplay. I would imagine this is only further reinforced and more evident playing in the higher difficulty settings though, as I have personally only played on the 'Hard Bastard' difficulty level; whereby sometimes it's best to not engage at all, conserve ammo, sneak around and just grab only the resources or parts that you need, or only grab what you can or that which is safe to do so, depending on the risk.

Each level is generally another ship that you will be boarding, and they can have additional random modifiers applied to them, such as having to restore power to the ship's systems, so that you can then exit the level or be able to open/close and lock/unlock doors, or elemental obstacles in the form of fires, pools of radiation, and live electrical cables lying around. The type of enemies there are in a level, and how many there are, how much ammo, health, fuel and food you have, whether you have any warp keys or torpedoes etc., these all need to be taken into account before entering a level, and when navigating the star map if you want to extend the run, increase your survivability and maximise the amount of parts you can gather for the upgrades.

There's somewhat of a story element to the game, that provides a bit of structure to the gameplay loop; through an overarching series of objectives, it helps you to become accustomed to the game, and also guides you into the more difficult and dangerous areas or zones. This gives you some sense of direction or meaning; a reason to keep going and to attempt another run after you die. The story element also serves up some context, flavour and personality to the game experience, which there is plenty of; it's present in the writing, the voice acting, the sound effects, the soundtrack, the great cel-shading art style, the comic strip styled 'cutscenes', and its quirky sense of humour.

Great game - a nice variety of interesting gameplay mechanics, and plenty of customization options that provide you with multiple ways to approach and complete the mission's objectives. Plus you also get to do some (lite) 'managing' of your own private military force (unfortunately only via a menu) with base-building, conducting R & D projects, sending teams on missions around the world etc.
The development team should be commended for transitioning (although not quite flawlessly) this franchise to the open-world format. The only weak point is the story, but even so, the gameplay itself more than makes up for it.
