TLDR: Excellent game, fun, massive depth to gameplay and builds, fantastic devs, free to play, lack of noob friendly start however is a bit of a turn off; 8/10.

The start may a be a bit slow and there is a lack of tutorial/noob friendly starting information. If there's anything this game sorely needs it's more help for people learning the mechanics of Path of Exile. In saying that, there is a wealth of information available for free online through the PoE subreddit, forum and in game chat. Once you get through the first 5 - 10 hours of play and you've got the basics of game it will have you hooked. I haven't been so engrossed in a game like this since Diablo 2 LOD, it's seriously good. I've played over 100 hours (played on and off before steam release but I was sold on Dota 2 at the time) on my steam account, probably with play about 160 or so hours worth total play time at this stage. I'm still learning things as well as breaking new ground by starting to play high level content such as Vaal fragment maps and area maps. Maps are similar to dungeons in wow but content is dialled in for the amount of players in the zone. Maps can be played by 1 player or a full party of players.

Touching on the f2p aspect of PoE. There are a lot of microtransactions in the game. However, before the pitchforks come out they are all non-essential and give no pay to win aspect to the game. They are all skins, stash tabs, guild stash tabs and extra character slots (over 24 or so characters). Alternatively you can donate with supporter packs and get things like T-shirts, in game pets, forum titles etc

There are initially 6 characters to choose from, a 7th is unlocked after beating the main story quest on normal difficulty. The depth of character builds in Path of Exile is mind blowing. That's the only way I can think of describing it. Every character has the opportunity to be whatever they want, within reason. Want to run a Marauder (typically a strength melee class) that uses wands and spells? Go for it. Want to run a Shadow (dexterity and intellect class) as a teleporting, bow wielding maniac? Go for it. Want to not do anything and let spell totems or minions do the work for you? Go for it. There are so many different ways to build your character, play how you want and see what happens. Doesn't work so well, change it up with skill and support gems or even different gear. Look up build of the week on youtube, there are some very clever and ridiculously powerful builds out there. Sure, some builds are more viable than others as the the difficulty ramps up. But, unless you follow build guides I'd say a lot of players will have a fairly unique build, give or take a skill gem or two.

Frequent community events such as races and leagues give the opportunity for the players to rank themselves against each other in a ladder system. These events are optional if one does not want to partake. The races and leagues can reward unique league specific items which are either found as drops in the game or rewards for accumilating points in the league/race so there is some incentive to play. New leagues typically also test new content before it's released to the standard realm server. i.e. the current new league is Talisman.

Devs are regularly in touch with the community through reddit and PoE forums. They are know for putting out hot fixes by working weekends after a patch release, they really show dedication to the community and regularly take on board ideas from interacting with the games fanbase.

In conclusion, if you liked Diablo 2 LOD and want a more modern game with a twist of difference, jump on Path of Exile. Remember, it's free to try and I'm confident you won't regret it!
