I bought the game for £25 from a CD keys website, rather than the £49.99 for the Standard Edition on here. I would not have bought it at full price as I knew it was effectively a re-branded Total War Saga, with all the connotations that brings regarding lack of faction variation and historic/geographic breadth.

I tried the campaign as Ramesses III and its enjoyable enough, though lacking in replay-ability. The economy is pretty identical to Troy with food, wood, stone, bronze and gold as the resources respectively. I do quite like the resource system as it requires a bit more thought than just acquiring one currency type and also it means your settlements tend to have vastly different building setups.

The Sea People invasion stacks as well as the constant stream of tribal invasions(Libyans, Kaskians or Phrygians depending on where you are on the map) take up a lot of your attention for the bulk of the game. You are expected to fight these invasions simultaneously alongside expanding your empire through wars with traditional settled factions. The tribal invasions become irritating rather than a genuine threat rather quickly, and unless you are willing to leave large expensive armies near the areas they spawn i.e. the Western Desert for Libyans; then you are forced to focus the settlements in these zones on garrison buildings & outposts.

The religious element of the game is fun and it allows you to mix-and-match different Egyptian/Canaanite/Hittite deities to suit your play style. I didn't find the Egyptian Court political mini-game very enjoyable or purposeful, it felt like more of an after thought.

The battles are fine even if armies all play rather similarly. At present there are no ranged artillery which sounds historically plausible and cavalry are entirely chariot based. Archers are deadly but even the most heavily armoured archers are extremely vulnerable if engaged even by a tier 1 melee unit. The return of sappers in sieges is a welcome move, though the holes they make in the walls appear at the very beginning of the battle. Constructing siege equipment such as ladders/towers is a necessity as units no longer come with in-built ladders like in some other Total War releases. However, melee can still miraculously destroy gates without a battering ram even if slowly.

I think like most people i'm disappointed by the pricing and the narrow geographic coverage - I'm in camp of desiring a Bronze Age Total War with Assyrians, Babylonians, Mitanni, Mycenaean's etc. The frequency of the tribal attacks should be reduced and the Sea People's should perhaps come a little later but in stronger waves. I suspect future DLC's will feature over-the-top new faction leaders with a 'cool' a-historical aesthetic but only slightly different unit rosters to the current factions; rather than new cultures and expansion of the map to other parts of the Levant.

I'm not normally one for RPG's where you have to play a predefined character but this is one of the few exceptions. Amicia is a pleasure to play and she suits the stealth and survival theme perfectly. The setting of the story is in mid-14th Century France, I assume in Aquitaine but no definite locations are given. The level of detail particularly around the towns and churches is impressive and if not for the presence of the Black Death then it would be rather picturesque. The music also contributes to the feeling of doom and a world falling apart.

Though the fantasy elements of this game play a large part, it is mostly restricted to the hordes of rats and the cartoon-ish strength of some enemies in the Inquisition - though the latter may be to emphasise the sheer task of defeating a Knight in plate armour as a 13 year old girl. The missions are mostly linear with the occasional detour to collect items. There are infrequent situations where you need to react quickly and decisively to not be overwhelmed, but the bulk of the game is spent executing well timed stealth actions to progress.
