It's a Civ game. Of course it's worth playing.

Fun and deceptively simple, offering technically challenging gameplay. The opportunity for you to improve your skill level is cleverly hidden at first, but you'll soon want to master it and may find yourself unexpectedly losing an hour or two.

The biggest downside is how quickly the difficulty drops once you start getting 70+ ton mechs

This was amazingly fun with a full group of 4 people when I first started it. Very fun way to handle the tower defense genre. There is your standard mage with towers, but also interesting ideas like monk with damage/debuff bubbles, archer using traps for support type defense, and a tanky type knight using walls and ballista. You can increase either your obstacles' effectiveness, your actual hero effectiveness, or a mix of the two.

It got too difficult to keep up with much of the harder content without getting some amazing gear, which was only obtainable very briefly via some hardcore exploitation. By the time we got to that point in the content, there was no legit way to get the gear yourself without trading for exorbitant prices. Was fun while it lasted, and definitely worth some time just to get through the original/non-DLC part of the game to level up and try it out. Even more so if you've got a group of buddies.

Have not played in a long time so some of the negative aspects may already be addressed by now, but at this point I'm not likely to return.

Played through it to get a new take on the XCOM series. Graphics were pretty glitchy/unpolished. Controls weren't very intuitive. Combat was interesting but not really my cup of tea. The plot line wasn't exciting and seemed mostly just a way to tie the different missions together. Cutscenes seemed buggy or the plot simply left things unanswered (like the story presumed you suddenly knew something that wasn't explained). There wasn't really anything that made me feel this was really "XCOM" other than the name and some aliens.

This game feels very rewarding when you manage to win out in some sticky situations. There's a steep difficulty curve at the start of each new game (steeper at higher difficulties) but once you've researched some technologies the tables turn quickly. Early game is frustrating, mid game is challenging, and end game is typically a cake walk. With the Enemy Within DLC it gets a lot more interesting with some of the balancing and added tech/unit options.
