This is an incredibly clever game. It's genuinely impressive that the creators have managed to make this concept into a working game. The complexity required to make a puzzle/rougelike that works and is consistently fresh each run is executed extremely well. The game never feels unfair, every mistake is something you can see in advance.

It took me around 8 hours to complete the game in its current state, although I haven't done the extended challenges. There's definitely room for some more mechanics and ideas to be implemented, and I hope the devs are still planning on releasing a bit more content.

Overall, it's a fun and short game, that doesn't get boring before you finish it.

Also, bark at everything.

I'm writing this review from a long time Dota player's perspective. The similarities are few, but the differences are so welcome. I would hesistate to call it a sped up condensed version of Dota, purely because it's 2d. This takes away so many things that the whole experience is different.

Games are handled much more casually, with players being able to drop in and out of matches. There is a level system external to the gameplay which unlocks the first 20 characters each level, and from then onwards unlocks a new skill option, one per level. You will gain one level per match, at least, and if you win probably 2/3 levels. Overall I found I had earned more things from levels than I was able to keep up with, which is a good thing.

The characters are fast to learn and there is not a lot of clutter on screen. The simplicity of some moves can sometimes be annoying, especially when you get dunked several times over by the same combo, but you eventually learn the pattern and solve the problem, much like bloodseeker's rupture. I will say now that the artstyle is great, and the game intro is super ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool. Also each character has a theme song that plays during your skill selection, pretty nifty.

The levelling system for your character within the match rewards good play and there is almost no (noticable) rubberbanding. Teamplay and foresight are key, being outnumbered is usually lethal. The respawn time is about the same as Dota's, but for the last 10 seconds you get to play a mini game to collect gold before you spawn, although it's not really necessary.

My main criticism is probably that out of the 20ish characters there are 3 that, at the moment, are only available if you pay. And those characters are hard to learn, because you can't use their skills thus can't get a feel for them. I haven't dabbled in any of the cosmetics, but it's worth mentioning there's no pay to play aspects other than purchasing the extra characters.

Overall, as a dota afficionado, I would recommend this game. It captures the frenzy and a small amount of the strategy of dota, without being anywhere near as time consuming or mentally demanding. No real criticisms, it's very well executed and cuts to the chase.
