There's not enough going on here on top of the combat to maintain my interest. You have randomly generated maps consisting of interconnected square rooms. A bunch of jerks come in, you kill them all, and then you go to another room to kill all the guys who are in that one. You can dodge a bit, use your grapple hook or adjacent gadget, you can get +5% damage, you can unlock new characters, but in the end you're just going and killing guys in drab square rooms while you try not to fall asleep IRL. This game made me realize that boomer shooters aren't for me and I will refrain from buying them ever again so I might not sully the good name of another dev. I'm sorry for my negative review; this game just wasn't for me.

I've played thousands of hours of STALKER games and their various modded versions. I remember reading about the first game in Game Informer magazine and loved it at launch in spite of itself. I'm willing to put up with bugs and general garbage.

I do like STALKER 2. But I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone beyond die-hard fans at the moment.

There are a couple things working well here right now.

They've done a great job of preserving the atmosphere of the Zone- it's haunting and fun to explore. Although it's completely unrealistic, it was an inspired design choice to make your stash universal- I've ventured out and explored places beyond Rostok because I don't need to worry about dragging my hoard along- it's there waiting in the chest at whatever town I visit! Some of the quests are pretty good.

But there are many systems that feel very lacking. The performance is absolutely abysmal. The economy is horrendous- quest rewards are downright pathetic, making repairs untenable and purchasing or upgrading equipment stressful and risky. Weapon balance is confusingly terrible- I've had almost no incentive to seek out anything beyond the first unique AK I found in the first couple hours of the game, since ammo for it is plentiful and it does more damage than many other weapons (even many in a higher caliber!). A greater variety of attachments would be nice, too. A-Life doesn't appear to be working, and most of your encounters will just be 3 dudes spawning on top of you. Also, a lot of factions look very similar to each other, which makes me nervous to shoot at people before I've had a chance to make sure they're someone I want to be shooting.

I'll keep playing in the meantime, but this game just doesn't feel like it's done yet. I saw a modder in the comments on a YouTube video say something along the lines of "if STALKER 2 is broken, we'll fix it." I believe that's what's going to happen, and I have high hopes for the future of this game. Currently, however, I think many of the free standalone modded versions of STALKER will give you a better Zone experience.

P.S. Some people are mad that they can pour entire clips into mutants and they won't die (and I certainly think this could use some balancing), but if you approach being a stalker like being a witcher you'll be okay- rifle for humans, shotgun for monsters.

Credits rolled just shy of 8 hours but the mysteries are only deepening.

Feels like the best parts of Super Metroid, Fez, and a more accessible La Mulana.

Has some pretty tricky platforming sections, so if that's not your jam, be aware!

Go in blind if possible!

Starfield is a solid 6.5/10. I was glad I got a discount from a key reseller.

I was entertained during my experience, but once I exhausted the main story content and faction quests, I didn't really feel like I had anything else to see.

Performance-wise the game was kind of mediocre for how generally ugly it looked. For some reason it didn't ship with a FOV slider (it has one now).

It has cool machine designs. I felt like the heavy industrial doors were believable as they opened and closed. I liked some of the weapons.

The UI is bafflingly bad. Cycling through maps is confusing. Moving items around is painful. I endured dozens of hours of NPCs insulting me for wearing my helmet inside because I didn't realize I could turn it on/off in stations automatically by toggling a setting buried in a menu somewhere. There's just no excuse to regress this much when you've had a couple decades of modders showing you want people like and want to see.

There's a whole lotta nothing to (not) explore. Landing on a planet and going to see what you can see is a great way to observe the complete lack of human touch that went into "filling" this universe. It will almost always be a waste of time. The game would have been much better served to take all the worthwhile content and jam it into a single star system.

Skills will make you sad. I went with a gunning guy, and I wanted to pick skills that directly supported that. Unfortunately, I also had to invest a fat stack of points into other garbage nerd pocket protector stuff in order to upgrade my weapons. It just felt like in between every skill point I was excited to spend, I had to waste a pile of points or spec into stamina because my character couldn't run for 10 seconds without getting winded and taking damage from excessive cardiovascular strain. If you didn't spec into ship fighting you'd better lower the difficulty or you'll be dying (of boredom) waiting for your ship's weapons to recharge. I hope for your sake you didn't invest into sandwich making!

The game has a magic system but it doesn't really care too much about it, and you shouldn't either.

My absolute biggest gripe is how they handled new game plus. New game plus triggers a refresh of the entire game's universe- all the quests are refreshed and you're free to take your high level character through faction paths or events you may not have seen your first time through. They incentivize new game plus with a powerful ship and suit that get more powerful with each subsequent entry into a new universe. Cool! However, you ALSO lose all your physical possessions. You only take your character and skills- nothing else! Credits, homes, customized weapons and armor, spaceships or outposts you may have constructed- ALL GONE. Why do they tempt you with rewards on the one hand, but threaten to undo all the time you spent interacting with the game's systems? Surely there was a better way to go about this.

I spent almost 60 hours playing the game, I liked it! But that's it. Just liked. Not like-liked, and certainly not loved. I can't in good conscience recommend it without a laundry list of concessions, but it will be a fun way to kill some time if you can pick it up during a sale.

What they say about Outer Wilds is true- it's a game you can only truly experience once as the only thing preventing you from rushing straight to the ending is the knowledge about the game's universe and events you slowly build upon as you play. Once you know about something, you know, and if you ever replay the game you'll play with a full understanding of all the juicy secrets you had to painstakingly uncover your first time through! It's an interesting and rewarding approach to gameplay and storytelling that I wish more developers would attempt. The art is good, the music is good, the writing is good.

It pains me then to give Outer Wilds a bad review, but this game makes too many concessions with player time. This might seem unfair, but if you're like me and your time to play games is limited it begins to feel incredibly aggravating. You'll spend a lot of time traveling from point A to point B doing nothing in between. Heaven help you if you make a fatal mistake as you're trying to do something, because if you do you'll need to start over again.

At a certain point, you'll understand what needs to be done to finish the game, and it's a path fraught with plenty of opportunities to waste time. For me, looking up the ending on YouTube was the right way to go because I was tired of twiddling my thumbs as I stared at the screen waiting to play. Also, I have to add the ending to the list of cons- another unfortunate weak point in an otherwise stellar game.

This game is simultaneously nearly perfect and annoyingly flawed. I recommend it for the unrivaled feeling of mystery and exploration and don't recommend it for the criminal amount of time it keeps you from doing the fun stuff.

Elden Ring is an exceptional game. Made with love and care, it's an utterly massive, 80+ hour adventure that basically took over all my free time and kept me playing past my bedtime (which isn't like me at all) until I finished it.

It's something of a comfortable retread of FromSoftware's other titles- there are many familiarities as far as UI, controls, RPG mechanics, and nebulous storytelling mechanics go. However, all of these elements have been refined and work very well. If you liked Dark Souls, you'll probably like this as well.

This game is incredibly long for a single-player game, and while I feel it fills that time with meaningful things to do (atypical of most open-world games) towards the end I started to feel burned out. I probably could have avoided this if I paced myself a little better, but this game was the first game I've played in awhile that had me wishing I were playing it whenever I was doing anything else.

Performance seems to be hit and/or miss. I played at 60 fps most of the time, but when I went onto the open-world map I enjoyed a stuttery 45-60. After patch 1.02 I had crashes every 4-5 hours, which was mostly just an annoyance as the game did a pretty good job of starting me off right where I was when things went south.

If you have other things to play, it wouldn't hurt to wait for a patch. If you need something to play and don't mind putting up with some performance issues, it's worth picking up. This game was worth the wait and is worth every penny. FromSoftware continues to deserve their incredible reputation.

I held off on buying this one because I was pretty sure that this game couldn't possibly live up to the hype, but there's a good reason it's so well-loved. Beautiful artwork, exceptional writing, and incredible acting from the cast. I'm usually far more motivated by mechanics than story, but the characters were so good I couldn't help but eat up every word. I enjoyed my time with Hades from start to finish. I can't wait to see what Supergiant comes up with next (although hopefully there's no need for Epic exclusivity next time).

As I closed in on 100%, I read about a "Godmode" setting in options that you can turn on if you're having a hard time (or, as the game puts it, "...or, for any reason") that gives you insane damage reduction bonuses. If you're on the fence about turning this on, here's what I would say- if you're playing solely for the story or normally rely on accessibility options, this will allow you to enjoy the game without headaches. However, I'm normally not amazing at roguelike-like-likes like this and died a TON but eventually I started to figure out what weapons pair well with what boons, gained momentum, and began winning more and more. The game is incredibly well-designed and has a pretty good difficulty curve that keeps things engaging and doles out new tools without allowing things to be too easy. If you're a little frustrated, I'd say hang in there! There's nothing quite like that first successful run.

I really wanted to reach the final difficulty level and thus unlock all this game has to offer before writing a review but I've somehow played it for 100 hours and feel like I'm just scratching the surface so I'll just share my thoughts now. Here's what you need to know about this game: it combines the frenetic, complex combat of Ninja Gaiden with a tiered loot system like Diablo. If that sounds like your jam, you'll probably like it. Here are some other things it has:

  • 11 viable and interesting melee weapons with unique skill trees that play very differently
  • 3 stances (high, medium and low) for each weapon that alters how they preform
  • A way to regain stamina mid-combat by pressing a button with the right timing
  • 3 types of ranged weapons
  • 2 kinds of magic (onmyo and ninjutsu)
  • A handful of skill trees that aren't exactly related to the aforementioned weapons and magic
  • Transmog so you can be like me and run around in rags looking mostly homeless
  • A character creator that allows you to accurately recreate your hideous IRL face
  • The ability turn your helmet off so you might always savor your foul visage
  • Menus that allow you to adjust all sorts of gameplay elements (like turning off notifications for the buckets of low-tier loot you hoover up)
  • An enormously complicated system for upgrading equipment and replacing affixes
  • The ability to collect the souls of the monsters you kill and use their abilities in combat
  • A bizarre and silly tea ceremony
  • Outside of the bizarre tea ceremony, a pretty useless and/or forgettable plot
  • Boob snakes
  • Poop as a status ailment
  • Characters speaking whatever their native language is and everyone understanding each other
  • A multi-tiered difficulty system that adds new items and additional layers of complexity to the various systems and adjusts enemy placement as you beat each preceding level
  • At least one genuinely awful quest (only required if you want all achievements) called "Against All Comers" that might make you very cranky because it will take you forever to finish if you don't have a build that melts everything or you're not one of the goofballs roaming the internet who love to unhelpfully tell people to "git gud"
  • Some multiplayer features? I haven't looked into them much but I know they're there and I know some people like them

People complain about the amount of garbage you collect. Just sell trash after every mission and you'll be okay.

I agree with much that has been said about what makes this game great, so I'll just share a few observations:

  • Those calling this game a walking simulator are doing it a grave disservice. To be sure, you do a lot of walking, but you also do a lot of walking in The Witcher and Among Us and Fallout 4 and Monster Hunter and Dark Souls. The inclusion of walking (even plenty of walking) in a game does not make it a walking simulator. There's too much going on here to slap a throwaway label like "walking simulator" on it.
  • About 40 hours in I started skipping cutscenes and I keep telling myself that I'll go back and watch them on YouTube, but let's be real- I'm never going to do that. As a player, I've been much more motivated to level up the different outposts, unlock new equipment, and perform difficult deliveries as fast as possible. I've spent (and enjoyed) entire sessions of playtime building structures and preparing the environment for a single delivery. If you find yourself drawn to mechanics and grinding, you might find a lot to like here.
  • The game makes some smart design choices. While in menus, you can use single button presses to make selections, but holding the button has different effects and can save you time. It took some getting used to, but I think it's a great way to improve menu navigation. Next, Kojima's flair for the cinematic is here in full-force (read: cutscenes for everything, even trifling minutiae), but you're allowed to skip just about all of it, which I appreciated immensely.
  • I'm going to finish the game and probably get all the achievements (I appear to be trending towards 80+ hours), but I don't know that I'll keep playing after, and I'm okay with that.

I like Death Stranding. It's refreshing, thoughtful, engaging, and pretty, and it lets me skip the parts I don't care as much about.

My friends and I first played this game when I was 16, taking turns at deaths or level completion. From the first time we got our head chainsawed off until the last outrageous moments, this game had me entirely enthralled. This year, 2016, in between summer classes, I had the chance to play this game twice more as I attempted all achievements- once on standard difficulty and once on professional. A decade after my first time, this game is still astounding.

What makes this game so great, so timeless?

It's made with love.

Uncharacteristic of a triple-A studio, this game wants you to have a good time and pulls out all the stops to ensure that your twenty or so hours per playthrough are the ride of your life.

Pacing? Sublime. There are segments where the game asks for all you have, pushes you to the limit because it, like a loving parent (or guardian) knows you can do it and that the cathartic juxtaposition of peace afterwards as you steadily upgrade your weapon of choice toward maximum power in preparation for the next mind-bending conflict is the sweetest of rewards.

Humor? Excellent. This game knows that by mixing humor and lighthearted character interaction into the mix as contrast that the violence is that much more appalling (fun fact? The aforementioned chainsaw decapitation was the first time a videogame ever made me feel sick). Never truly willing to take itself too seriously, its only goal is to have a good time, all the time.

Depth? 20,000 leagues. One playthrough introduces players to the systems and mechanics, but only through subsequent playthrough and exploration can all weapons and costumes (some of which even affect gameplay!) be unlocked. The weapons are very carefully balanced, and with thought, any weapon makes for a viable solution.

Graphics? This game is over 10 years old, and it does show. However, the characters, monsters, environments, and weapons are all carefully designed. Each reload animation is interesting and unique to watch. The monsters are grotesque, and the environments are beautifully detailed, with care paid to make all locations feel alive.

I'd be even more obviously biased in this game's favor if I didn't mention the following unfortunate facts:

At first the controls felt slightly archaic, having seemingly been surpassed by the legions of games this game's influence spawned, but after tweaking things slightly in the options menu things clicked into place. I also have to grudgingly admit that there are a couple strange bugs at 60 fps that occasionally make quick time events too difficult, and sometimes those segments are best at the game's terrible 30 fps setting, but that's easily remedied in the options menu.

Despite that, the game is perfect. Game of the year, decade, and century.

TL;DR bring the bolt-action rifle with you on Professional mode.
