I was a backer of the Kickstarter and I'll admit that I was originally in it for the soundtrack. I wasn't sure what to think about the story and gameplay at first. However, after playing the game I found it a rather enjoyable experience. Certainly a huge step up from the Web-based demo I had played previously. While there are a few things that did frustrate me a bit, particularly the lack of running indoors, those are minor nitpicks when you take into account the positive aspects. The story starts off with a girl trying to find her father and she quickly discovers a mystery at the Willows mansion and her journey takes her delving into a centuries-old tale that tugs at the heartstrings. If you like stories that evoke emotion and make you think then you can't go wrong with this one. Just make sure you pick up all of the notes lieing around for the entire story.

It may come as a shock to those who know about my past, but I actually really enjoyed playing through all of the released characters. While there is a lot of controversial topics that have seemed to polarize the player base (some love it and other really hate it based on what I've read on Steam), it still manages to evoke some sense of charm for an adult-themed story. I will point out that this is most definitely not for children or the prudish. Unlike Japanese "H-games" (which I happen to enjoy) there is only implied sexual scenes without showing it, but there is enough skin shown (particularly topless shots) to make it unsuitable for a younger audience. That said, if you're a fan of visual novels you can do worse. I look forward to seeing what other characters are released in the future, particularly Aleanne if she gets her own story.

Despite being a huge Sierra On-Line fan, I'll admit that I didn't know about the Gabriel Knight series until Jane Jensen's Kickstarter in 2012. After buying the trilogy and playing them for the first time during the campaign I instantly fell in love with the Schattenjager legacy. The combination of the point-and-click interface that I enjoyed and the dark supernatural leanings in each of Knight's cases made me wish that I came across them during their initial run. The stories and atmosphere were perfect for a horror fan such as myself and to find out that "Mystery Game X" (as it was known back then) was another game in the series (albeit a remake of the first one) made me happy. And this game still holds true to the original in every way with an updated interface and a facelift worthy to be called a Jane Jensen title.

Gone Home is more of an experience than an actual game. There is little in the way of puzzles, no combat or action to speak of. Hell, the only actual character in the game is you and the house you return to. The thing is, the story doesn't revolve around the protagonist at all. Searching the empty home you're told the tale of your sister and her relationship with your parents and her girlfriend. Through interacting with the environment you're shown and told her struggles to overcome what some people might consider unnatural and to come to terms with her burgeoning love for this other girl. For anyone who's grown up as LGBT or knows someone who did you should really do yourself a favor and pick this hidden gem up. There may not be much to it, but the emotions conveyed throughout more than make up for any shortcomings.

I don't know why I gravitate towards games that deal with mental disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, but The Cat Lady is one that captivated me from the start. The game starts out with you committing suicide and ending up in what I can best describe as a purgatory of sorts. In order to save your soul you're tasked with taking those of deranged and depraved lunatics in trade. Each and every chapter is somber and more than just a little depressing. For anyone who knows what it's like to suffer such things it really hits the mark. The endings (for there are about three or so of them) really make an impact when you take the game as a whole into account. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to play a dark and somewhat twisted game. Just a word of warning, though. Don't play if you're already feeling down.

I've never played the original Shadowgate, but I did play the other "Macventures" (Deja Vu and Uninvited) on my Atari ST back in the day. The remake stays true to the style of the games that came before it while still updating it to the expectations of today's generation, both graphically and musically. And even the simplest difficulty level still makes you scratch your head enough to enjoy a good challenge but not overly so. And Zojoi catered to the old school fans by offering a "retro" experience where you can experience the game almost like it was originally through overlays on the game itself. Anyone who fondly remembers these classics should give this one a try.

While it’s a very short game it’s still an adventure experience worth checking out if nothing else than to try something unique. The controls are pretty simple in that you move with the arrow keys, sprint with the shift key (a very limited run as Thomas has asthma), and interact with the world using the enter key. If there are two things that I didn’t like about Neverending Nightmares, it’s that the game was way too short and the endings left too many questions. The latter I can forgive as everything is built around dreaming. And anyone who remembers any dreams that they’ve had know that they can be jumbled messes that make little (if any) sense. And the former is due to the fact that I enjoyed the game so much that I wanted more. Yes, by the end of the day I left feeling a bit depressed and unnerved but that’s exactly how psychological horror works.

J.U.L.I.A. : Among the Stars is a very well written and beautiful game, especially when you take into account that most of it was done by two people. And the fact that they only got on the low end of five digits through their crowdfunding effort. It took me about eight hours from start to finish, so there’s a sizable chunk of content…about average for a contemporary point-and-click adventure game. Most of the puzzles are pretty simple to navigate with some deductive reasoning, but some are rather headscratchingly difficult. I found myself having to consult a walkthrough for each of the upgrades, for instance. Still, the experience more than makes up for this shortcoming.

All in all, anyone who’s a fan of science fiction should definitely give this game a try. It’s got space exploration, intrigue and a mystery that deepens the further you dig, and even some philosophical debate if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s not easy to make decisions when you’re on your own in an unknown sector of space, after all. And, while I tried to stay altruistic in my dealings with any natives sometimes the “right way” is not always the “best way” to deal with situations. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you play the game.

Being transgendered, I came into this game with VERY low expectations. While the game is certainly shallow and lacking in any real creativity, and can be finished in just a few hours, if you want an interesting RPG that won't take a hundred hours to complete you might find Victim of Xen a quick diversion. Yes, the focus on the game is on a boy being "cursed" to become a girl and his quest to get turned back. That alone was almost enough for me to turn my back on it, but I'm always open to at least giving it a shot. There's some political intrigue and world saving, but we've seen that already in numerous better (and longer) RPGs. I would certainly not recommend this game at full price, but if you can get it for at least half off it might be worth your time. In short, it's a mediocre title at best and a waste of money at worst.

Detective Grimoire is a rather short but fun little adventure game that was borne from free Flash gaming. The story is gripping and the humour has you chuckling throughout. If you’re a fan of mystery cartoons in the vein of Scooby Doo, then you’ll definitely want to pick this up as it feels just like an episode. Right down to the ending. But, I won’t spoil anything. You’ll have to figure out who did it and what the monster is on your own.
