Starlight Vega is a great game to play if you’re into yuri romances. It’s worth it just for the dialogue alone, but the deeper you get to know everyone the more you feel for them and their plights. In short, I highly recommend this game and not just as a backer but also as a fan of this type of story.

When it comes to post apocalyptic dystopian settings few genres do it better than adventure games and in the case of Shardlight it does the style of writing more than justice. I immediately got hooked on the struggles of everyday people as they struggle to survive in a harsh environment ran by a group of well-off individuals and ministries that, in their eyes at least, were for the greater good. Anyone who enjoys a good 'punk or dystopian setting really should check this one out. I've played almost all of the other Wadjet Eye games published and I have yet to be disappointed in their quality of pixel art or storytelling.

I want to point out that over the years I’ve gotten to know Steven Alexander and pretty much everyone at Infamous Quests pretty well and they’re always willing to listen and talk to their fans, going so far as to take any feedback to heart and improve upon each game that they release. And this one is no different. So far they’ve delivered on the promise of a fun retro style adventure game set in a beautiful pixelated world with well crafted puzzles and an engaging storyline. While still a bit on the short side, especially for those used to playing games of this type, The King’s Challenge is a polished game and perfectly sets the stage for the next installment.

Despite only being the first act of the game, with roughly four chapters and a prologue, I managed to still spend around three hours in The Slaughter. Considering that this is only a portion of the planned final release that’s actually a pretty good length of time. If there was one problem that I had with my experience it was that I wanted more. How does Sydney escape his current situation? Will the killer catch up to him? What will he do when he’s confronted with his demons, both internal and external? Will he discover a love of wearing women’s clothing (play the game, you’ll see what I mean)? And, frankly if this is my only problem then it’s most certainly worth playing. I just can’t wait for the next installment to be released.

Despite its short length (I finished in less than an hour) and linear plot (i.e. no branching paths) I really enjoyed the story behind Written in the Sky. I'm also a big fan of visual novels with LGBT themes. And this one certainly has one of the most interesting yuri (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) relationships that I've seen in a game in quite a while. Azure is your normal high school girl who's almost constantly bored with everything in her life. At least until she meets Sienna, who ends up being the Queen of Mars. Picking up the One Ring (seriously it looks just like it) she puts it on. She later finds out that this is a bonding ring that mates her with the alien and they fall in love. There's certainly a good amount of ecchi towards the end, at least if you're like me and prefer to play the uncensored version. It's not a deep story but you certainly can't beat the price of free.

Despite my frustrations I did still enjoy what has been released of Celestial Tear: Demon’s Revenge so far. The plot has intrigued me to the point that I am interested to see where they take the narrative in the next installments. The idea of one group of people branding another as evil just for being “different” resonates in me and I’d love to see Sen and Jagen meet each other, to see their reactions, and maybe form a bond despite them being an “enemy” to each other. If there’s one thing that I really hated about my experience is that I couldn’t watch the cutscenes. It could be my system but they ran so choppily that I couldn’t understand what was going on. At least the rest of the game played smoothly enough to enjoy my playthrough.

Outpost 13 is a good game but it falls a bit short of being great. If it were longer with more deep puzzles and interactions it would have rated higher on my personal scale. As it is it seems more of a demo for a unfinished game than anything. I do highly recommend grabbing this but not at the $10 asking price. Because it does have some interesting puzzles and playing as the monster instead of the hero is a novel approach that so few games take these days.

I will point out here that thanks to Mark Crowe and Chris Pope I developed a deep phobia of fried chicken. I’ll never look at it the same way and for that I’ll never forgive them. At the same time, it was an honor to be a part of the development process even if it was just telling them every build that I hated them. Seriously, though, it’s worth playing just to get an idea of what to expect when SpaceVenture finally hits by the end of next year. And it’s cheap, with all sales going straight into developing the main game.

There are three different endings, with several smaller branching paths, but I only managed to get one so far. And Brilliant Shadows is pretty lengthy, at least for a visual novel. After several hours of reading through the text I didn’t want it to end. This is something that only the most gripping stories have managed to invoke in me. Which obviously means that I’d love to see a sequel in the future should there be plans for one.

To be quite blunt, Divine Slice of Life isn’t a horrible game but at the same time it won’t be winning any awards. If you can get it on sale at like 75% off it’s worth playing through if you want to turn your brain off for an hour or two. Just turn off the voice overs if you play.
