I have not played any platformers since the Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins for the Gameboy. Coming with zero nostalgia for games like this on the NES and SNES this was an excellent game. I loved the visual style and the music phenomenal. Even if you don't like platformers I think this one is worth a look.

Hand of Fate is many thing. It is a collectible card game, a deck builder, a board game, an action RPG, and a roguelike. It features a bizarre combination of elements and manages to make an excellent game with what it has. The CCG aspect comes from exploring new cards and unlocking the tokens, which is done by completing a certain requirement for each. You collect your tokens and whether you win or lose, you get the prizes inside. Which happen to be equipment cards for your own deck, or more encounters to unlock more cards, or to help you journey through each level. You get to build two different decks in this game, one featuring all of the equipment you can get, from simple weapons and armor, to magical gear in the form of weapons, armor, rings, helms, and artefacts. The second deck you build is the encounters deck. It features all the cards that you can come across in the board game element. From a poorly disguisted goblin who only wants to help you, to a dangerous river crossing, to being captured by lizardmen, and much more. Each encounter card can play out in multiple ways. Giving blessings at one time, to curses at another. Filling your pockets with food and gold, or stripping it away. The board game has you choosing which way you want to go, unknown encounter cards lay ahead while you move one card at a time trying to find your way to the exit to eventually face the boss of the level. Hopefully aquiring the gear from your equipment deck along the way, or piling on curses and misfortune as your food and health are stripped away. Moving your piece on the board will always take one food. If you run out you begin to starve. The action RPG elements come into play when your encounter happens to be against a monster, drawn from a deck that only the dealer has access to. At the start of the battle all the pieces are placed, and the cards your gear resides on descend over your character to equip him. Battle begins, arguably the weakest aspect of the game, but easily looked over because of how well everything else is done. A simplistic Arkham combat is used here. Only one attack, a counter, and a roll. With access to a weapon power or artefact if you have either. Early in the game combat is good and quick. As you get to the later levels and with poor luck combat drags on, mostly turning into a roll fest while you dodge enemies and wait for an opening.

If you survive all your encounters and make your way to the final boss of the level, either a Jack, Queen, or King then you win, opening all the new tokens that you have obtained for that run, the same happens if fate is not with you and you fall in battle. The tokens open to reveal new goodies, all of which you must see on the game board while playing to learn what they do.

While each element that is in play here may not be the best done version, how all of them come together into a wonderful game. Excellent presentation from the art work and writing on the cards, to the dealers narration, to showing your progression in the room you are in by the slow burning of a candle, and destruction of the area around you. Having put 17 hours into my first time playing the game has only made me want to go back in and unlock more cards that I have not yet seen, and my head races with ideas that could be expanded upon hopefully in a sequel. Every time I start a new level it feels like a short game of Dungeons and Dragons is about to begin, making my way through an adventure, the cards deteremining how the story goes.
