Absolutely incredible! Really improves some of my games with minimum impact on quality. I can advise this for anyone that wants a bit of extra juice to play games with!

I have been hoping for a sequel for space marine for 11 years, I have been waiting for this to release for 2 years. Does it deliver? I will explain below, starting with the campaign, then the MP modes ending on the technical details and overall thoughts.

Campaign

Space Marine 2 puts you into the armour of a Space Marine 40.000 years into the future. A genetically engineered super soldier that is 3 metres tall, a space marine is almost indestructible, they are faster and stronger than any normal human and some of them can be hundreds of years old. They are wrapped in myth and legend and are skilled warriors beyond measure. They are a bulwark against terror in a universe that has known only war for centuries.

Humanity is fighting against horrors beyond their comprehension and while there are several factions of said horrors, the main one we're dealing with here, is a Tyranid Hive fleet.
Tyranids are a bug/lizard like faction that swarm the universe to consume biomass, they evolve at an incredibly fast rate and can counter almost any known weapon or biological agent known to mankind and speed is of the essence when dealing with them. A planet attacked by them never truly recovers and there are millions and millions gunning for you.

The story picks up quite some time after Space Marine 1, and you are Titus. While I won't go into much story detail. The tutorial and thus the introduction to Space Marine 2, immediately shows what stakes you're up against and sets the tone for the entire campaign.

The campaign is a great introduction to some of the scale that Warhammer 40K offers and its bleak hopeless setting, there is only war and it shows. The campaign is filled with gigantic set pieces, wild lush alien forests and jungles, gigantic cities with massive cathedrals or abandoned bunkers and dark secrets. Everywhere you see signs of the carnage that happens all around you and the grimdark setting that 40K invented really shines here.

Gameplay wise the game is reminiscent of Space Marine 1, just improved upon. combat is fast and diverse and the game expects you to switch tactics on the fly.

As a space marine you have a great arsenal of weapons to use, from the infamous Bolt weapons, massive assault weapons that fire a bolt, a massive rocket propelled round that embeds itself in the target and detonates, to melta guns, plasma guns, heavy bolters. But you also have several melee weapons, from the Chainsword, to the Thunderhammer. Why? because the combat in this games switches between thinning out hordes and hordes of enemies before they reach you and then turns into a hack and slash brawler fest.

The combat is incredibly dynamic and it keeps you on your toes especially on higher difficulties. Luckily you are not alone in this rigorous slaughter fest. Titus has two other space marines with him, which can either be controlled by your friends or the computer. While the bots lack some finesse and tend to focus on direct threats, they are a welcome addition. Just don't expect too much of them, they are bots. they beeline for you to get you up if you're down but not out and they can distract some enemies.

The campaign will take you around 10 to 12 hours to complete and my time with it was enjoyed very much, I had several "Holy sh!t" moments and I felt like a space marine, the story is all I hoped for after 13 years and I loved it.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer is the other part of Space Marine 2. It can be separated in two parts: PVE and PVP.

Operations (PVE)

PVE is one of the parts that shines here, during the campaign several squads often help Titus with secondary objectives, the PVE or Operations gives you control of these squads. You can run this with up to two of your friends or bots, but trust me, play with friends.

You have six classes with each of them having a distinct role, weapon set and main ability.
From the standard space marine with bolter and chainsword, to the bulwark with shield and sword to a stealthy sniper

Each class has weapon upgrades, perks for the weapons and the class itself and customisation to unlock.
Yes you can create your very own space marine or unlock several other space marine chapters and customise those and while the customisation needs some polish, it's incredibly varied.

There are currently six operations most of which coincide with the campaign, they can take 30 to 45 minutes to complete and on higher difficulties they require coordination, tactics and sharing of resources.

They often feel like mini raids and they are incredibly fun to do, however in contrast to games such as Darktide I wonder how fun these missions stay, they feel less like a horde shooter and more like a mini campaign, while enemy variety and objectives can switch around in an operation, I feel it might get repetitive. Yet they are like I said incredibly fun and I will probably keep coming back to them, just because of the gameplay loop.

Eternal War (PVP)

The second MP mode is Eternal War, a 6v6 PVP mode with the same classes as the Operations mode, just different progression. There three modes, King of the Hill, Seize ground (several points to capture) and Annihilation (team death match) and as of writing 3 maps.

The gameplay in pvp is great, classes are diverse and while some balancing might be happening it is incredibly fun to play despite it's lack of maps and modes. I spend several hours playing this and the tactical aspect in it is really fun, it isn't just run and gun, you have to counter other classes, bullwarks can block damage, snipers sneak around, assault's jump in to cut you down. There are tons of cool skirmishes to be found and it's an absolute blast.

However it's also the most bare bones part of the game. While the customisation for space marines is great, the chaos marines lack customisation, every class is attached to a traitor legion and is thus bound to it. You cannot play an iron warrior vanguard for instance and the armor itself is barely customisable, sometimes even not. For some of the more chaos minded players this can be quite a big letdown.

The other issue is that while it is 6v6 I can only make a lobby with three people, not six or four, locking out some of my friends to play with, I get it for PVE, I don't for PVP.

PVP feels like something added later in development and I hope that the devs do expand upon it with some much needed Quality of Life changes.

Technical

The game is quite CPU heavy, I have a i9-10850k CPU and a RTX4070 TI SUPER, the game runs like a charm in 90% of the game, but some areas and missions are incredible heavy on the CPU so much I wonder if it's a bit of optimalisation. Some area's that are small tank my frames, while some large open areas I run at a solid 80 FPS on ultra settings.

Besides that though, the game is beautiful to look at and effects, lighting, textures are all incredibly impressive, from the sparks of a broken cable to the blood that flies around.

The sound design is really well done and weapon sounds pack the punch you expect them to, every bolt fired, every enemy screech, every punch thrown is of high quality and this combined with the graphical design makes this a very immersive 40K game.

Conclusion

Despite some personal gripes and an in my opinion a bare bones PVP, this game has been worth the wait, it build upon the foundation of Space Marine 1 and improved it immensely. It offers something for older fans and something for newer fans of 40K and it is an incredible home-coming or introduction to the Space Marine franchise and thus Warhammer 40.000. It's an incredibly brutal, fun third person action game and the gameplay loop is quite addicting.

Sabre shows it understands 40K and this game is an ode to it.

Final scores
Campaign 10/10
PVE: 9/10
PVP 8/10
Graphics 9/10
Sound 9/10

Overall: 9/10

I have been playing this game for a long time and while I'm not playing VR as much, this game is my favourite. 1.0 really increases this games potential. the sense of progression is great.

This is one of the few VR games that makes melee combat really fun, stab, hack and slash your way through enemies, learn spells, burn your foes and become a whirlwind of death. Get better gear, get better weapons and learn to survive.

Levelling is uniquely done through finding crystals, most dungeons give you one, but you can find them all around, so it pays off to explore. Skills are all perk based, learn to float, to force choke, become more stealthy, learn to dash downwards in the air! why now combat trees like 1h or 2h? well that's up to you, learn to fight, higher tier weapons are better, but a good warrior makes use of his skill. Breaking a bucket on someone's head then hacking them down feels amazing.

The skills offer variety. Unlock new skill trees by well doing dungeons, finding maps and unlocking bigger dungeons to gain new skill trees. Gain loot and upgrade your gear.

Graphically this game looks good, not great but really good, with environments really shining. I really felt like and adventurer.

My only gripe is water, I have a fear of depths and especially water. While there is nothing in there, it still sends me into a panic. Honestly wish there was an option to turn that off, however water is never necessary, there is always a way around or over.

Secondly this game has incredible mod potential. Go nuts I'd say.

Honestly if you get this? play at least till the first boss, that really sold me on how great a VR game could be and I have never ever felt more bad ass.

Well done devs, after years of development, you nailed it. Please for the love of everything, don't add giant spiders.

This game is brimming with potential, but sadly none of it is unlocked.

The story it self is quite good and has it's classic Marvel moments, gameplay when working is quite solid as well and every hero has a unique feel.

However the game is plagued with technical issues and while they are fixing them allot are still around.

I can barely play with my brother and it takes us at least 15 minutes to get into a mission and even then it's unsure if the game is stable enough to finish the mission itself without crashing.

This isn't just the multiplayer, it's the single player as well.

I had to do the final mission 8 times before it didn't crash or I came across a progress breaking bug.

We are talking not only about stability here, but missing textures, sounds and general lack of polish.

If I play as Iron man, my brother can't see me shot, if he plays as hulk I can't see him throw, and this is random, we finished one mission that actually worked and that mission had no sound whatsoever.

A game brimming with potential, but none of it matters at all, it's broken in more ways than one.

Allright the game so far, is great, it's exactly what I expect of a sequel but the optimalisation is horrid.

I run Doom at 130 fps on high to ultra high settings and Battlefield 1 at 70 fps on high.

I have a GTX 960 4GB, I5-6600k 3.5 ghz and 16 gigs of ram.

so I expected to run this game at at least 60fps stable between high and medium settings.

The game runs even on very low on a low resolution, horrible, as you can see with most reviews, most off them have around 1.5 to 1.6 hours of play time, I won't spoil anything, but that part of the game runs horrid, really really horrid, dropping to 3 fps no matter what I tried in settings. it is unplayable.

Now I realize I have been playing before the official release tommorow and even nvidia doesn't have a driver yet, so it is time to play the waiting game.

I honestly cannot recommend it at this time.

Is this game worth your buy? in my opinion yes, it is a very fun very cool warhammer 40k shooter, with combat based upon that of warhammer 40k Space marine.

Now if you look at all these angry and dissapointed steam reviews, about not getting what is promised, you are probably seeing people being dissapointed, because they did not get what was promised, now here is the thing, I became a founder about a year ago, the devs have been very clear in what they are developing and were very clear when the release date was announced.

They stated why the game is released in this state and also stated why this would be better.

simply said, by releasing it now, instead of over 2 years when everything is implemented, the game can live on, with a greater community and more feedback. I can agree with this, releasing the game now isn't the most stable of choices, but then again 2 years of development hell isn't either.

The game is supposed to be supported for a long long time, improving and adding along the way, they even had a flowchart for this.

The devs stated that this was their idea, free updates and new stuff along the way. I like that deal a lot better.

The game itself in it's state is fun, it feels like warhammer 40K and it looks amazing, combat like I said is based upon that of Warhammer 40K spacemarine and added upon, making it a rock paper scissors kind off melee combat.

4 factions add a lot of different battles, but there still needs to be some balancing done, orcs are very squishy and eldar while squishy are intense in melee combat, space marines at the moment are the weakest faction.

This game had a lot of potential a year ago and a lot of potential has been achieved and a lot of the promised made are fullfilled and some are yet to be fullfilled.

This games is in my opinion the closest thing to full on war in the 40K universe and I recommend it to all the 40K fans out there.

First things first, the game isn't perfect, I had some problems with the game freezing and such at some points and eventually found a rather strange work around, but the game worked fine for de rest of the duration.

The game it self is incredible, the levels are huge and the gunplay is amazing, killing enemies is incredibly satisfying and while the gore kills could use some variation, I never got tired of ripping off someones arm and beat him to death with it. the guns and such feel incredible, from the super shotgun to the pistol, all have their own feel and use and while the super shotgun as one of my favorites, I switched trough most weapons during the more intense fights.

I finished the game in around 15 hours on normal difficulty and while the story is light, every single bit of personality you see from the Doom Marine is incredible, he is pissed that some idiot opened the gates of hell and let them lose and you are of course the one that has to stop it.
why be carefull if you're the unstoppable pissed off, bringer of death to all demon kind?

The game nailed the feeling of making you feel like an unstoppable badass and no matter how many demons there are you feel like none can stop you and I played the entire campaign with a smile on my face.

Now the MP, I played the closed and open beta of it and I have to say that I can not really get into it, while it feels like an old school shooter and I enjoy the MP, it does not bring back that old school feeling like the campaing did. It drops the ball for me on a few points, while the campaign has weapon mods, the weapons in MP are very very static, meaning that they have only one mod and you can't change that mod. lag is a very real deal in the MP and it can make killing people very difficult, I played a match against someone who was lagging all over the place and it was impossible to kill him, or weapons don't hit the enemy, stuff like that.

The graphics differ as well and some of the animation do too, the MP feels like a completely different game and it could really use some smoothing out, movement and everything feels smooth, but gunfighting doesn't, kills only feel cool with glory kills and the MP feels slower than the SP, but that could just be personal.

Some of the weapons in MP are not available in the campaign and I can see why, the burst rifle feels out of place and so does the vortex gun, they are very precise weapons and that doesn't feel right in an arena shooter (bit of personal prefference)

Then we have the snapmap, the snapmap allows people to make their own arenas, missions and co op battles.
I played some user created content and I see a lot of potential, people recreated old doom missions and arena's and some are really really incredible! In my opinion it would be cooler if it used the Campaign as basis and not the MP of course with the co op that makes it difficult, but in my opinion it could allow for some higher quality maps and allows ou to continue the rampage of the Doom marine.

The game feels great and the campaign was a blast, while the mp is really fun it could use some smoothing out in terms of latency and feeling and the snapmap has so much potential, I look forward to playing user creations from all over the world.

You play as Adam Jensen, the head of security at Sarif industries, a company that focusses on developing human augmentations, such as bionic prosthetics.

Due to an attack, Jensen once fully human, has most of him replaced with augments.
After six months of recovery, Adam once again goes into the fray to stop another attack from terrorists attacking Sarif industries and uncovers a conspiracy which is bigger than he could have ever dream off.

The game mostly focusses on an action based style soft rpg and there are a lot of choices to be made, some offer direct results, others indirect. Don't kill a terrorist and he might reward you later on in the game, help a co-worker and he might reveal some info later on.

Adam can unlock more augmentations by leveling up or collecting praxis points and some of these are things like looking through walls or turn invisible, one of the augments lets you scan humans in a conversation to more easily manipulate them.

Gunplay itself is solid and intense, even though Adam is augmented he is most definitely not invincible and even with the armor upgrades, enemies are tough, you can only carry so much with you (the game uses a trunk inventory system, so expect a lot of puzzling trying to get one energy bar in your inventory) and cover and tactics are essential, making gunfights incredibly dynamic, enemies aren't the brightest, but they can be incredibly stubborn.

The world itself is really well formed, it is futuristic and most obviously a torn one, with augs on one side and purists on the other and with diverse themes, you are just a man that had no choice in getting augmented, yet some look at you in disgust, do you accept those terms or not and what truly makes us human?

The graphics are dated, it looks good, but compared to some of the newer games, it falls a bit flat. The main characters are obviously detailed, than some of the secondary characters and there isn't that much diversity in goons except for types.

All in all this an incredible game and a must if you haven't played it yet.

When I started playing this game, it sucked. I returned after seeing that alot of people were claiming it changed. So with a skeptical mind, I returned. ONLY TO BE BLOOOOOWN AWAY, more content, more bug fixes, stats that worked and fits by the characters! (Spider-man is a dodge god) the developers showed that even if there are 36 deadpools running around, it works (also 36 Deadpools making the same joke at the same time, is kinda funny) so try it. It really is a good game.
