My thoughts after finishing my first campaign as Germany in 1914 start. Took 17 turns, finished around March of 1916, drained national will after surrounding the southern allied forces and then taking and holding Calaise which is the British spawn.I had 0 defeats and forced a stalemate in every enemy attack.

Most of the people whinging is because they still haven't worked out how to play. But let me start by confirming the issues.

1. The AI does have fog of war cheats, it's not looking at the back of your line but if you leave any troops in the open, it will target them with Arty. This will probably get patched but it's pretty manageable in game.

2. Occasionally soldiers do jump out of trenches when they should move through them which leads to them dying. This doesn't happen very often. I would say most of the people complaining it happens all the time is due to a misclick.

3. The enemy attacks is mass waves... yes... yes it does. It's only really an issue if you don't know how to set up your trenches. oddly enough, defensively, it's better to leave your trenches disconnected than to connect them as if they want to take the next one then they have to jump our rather than run through a safe trench. The AI doesn't do this so once you break in to their trench you will be running through a giant network of trenches. - Always plan a defence in depth

4. Arty doesn't work defensively... yea but also it's just the game mechanic. Lighty arty stuns, heavy arty damages. Don't use light arty defensively. Heavy arty can be effective if the enemy is clumping up enough but honestly, you're probably better off with more infantry and trenches and maybe some barbed wire.

5.Supply issues.... This isn't really an issue. Just learn to play. Put money in to supply and your gold reserves and then build supply depots. Most matches I was able to use my arty almost non-stop. It was worse at the start of the game when... surprise.. I hadn't pumped my supply as much.

Overall this game is really fun and has quite a bit of depth to explore, It feels like a shake up on the traditional RTS and brings in some almost tower defense elements. Co-ordinating your arty with your inf pushes takes some getting used to but feels good when you get used to it. So does learning to de-value the lives of your units and really throwing in to a blender in order to achieve some kind of a break in to the enemy trenches.

HOI4 is literally my most played game on Steam. A game that offers an amazing level of depth and truely makes you feel like a general when you start to master all of the different aspects that you need to manage. It immerses you in history and offers great insights in to certain alternate histories as well. It's relatively easy to pick up but there's always something new to learn and you'll certainly learn a lot faster by watching videos or finding someone who can teach you. The developers constantly keep this game up-to-date and making free improvements for all to enjoy as well as releasing new paid DLC. Not to mention the litany of free mods that are available some of which have so much content they may as well be a whole other game.

I can honestly say if there was one studio that represented a model for how to engage with their players and continue to support a game it would be the HOI4 team at Paradox.
