A short, but wonderfully atmospheric and immersive soundtrack, whether or not you like the visual novel itself. It's currently missing two other soundtracks, but hopefully that gets updated to include those!

I admit, my wife and I watched this visual novel free from somewhere, but now I have the opportunity to patronize this wonderfully-written kinetic visual novel. Outside of a few typos and some moments where it’s a few lines too many, you will be immersed within the environment where this game takes place, from the atmospheric scenery and music, good character development, some meaningful themes involved and just the right amount of pacing for most of the journey. While it can get dreary at times, it’s very calming, uplifting and makes you think about your life choices on your journey in life. It even showcases how to appropriately draw a petite woman and a large-breasted woman! Speaking of which, while there ARE nude scenes in this novel, the majority of such scenes are not the focal point because the writing focuses a lot more about the lore, relationships and any other wholesome moments within the series (This is in comparison to visual novels that have nude scenes just for the sake of nude scenes *COUGH!!*Sakura*HACK!!*Series*COUGH!!*). The themes this novel showcases are coping with loneliness, immortality and its issues, the human conditions, fears of the unknown and how to face it, how even a little kindness and help can make a huge difference in life, not taking your life for granted and taking time to appreciate your environment and what life has given you, looming stigmas and how to diffuses them, opening up towards other people and the ever present question of how long can one travel before finally settling down with someone you truly love. This is all wrapped up in a way that can make you feel warm and fuzzy in a sincere way and I really like how this novel presents these issues.

And that leads me to a important question: Why am I giving this wonderful visual novel a thumbs down?

Unfortunately, you are also forced to go through the type of sex scenes in this novel. Two out of four (Or is it three out of four?) sex scenes are initiated through sexual assault, which is NOT consensual at all. That left a jarring juxtaposition compared to all the good moments and left me conflicted on how the characters’ relationship actually progresses. It made the relationship feel rushed and insincere, and it’s further magnified when certain relationships are not consensual. It nearly ruined my overall enjoyment of a otherwise wholesome visual novel! Considering this, I’m absolutely conflicted whether or not this kinetic visual novel is something worth going for. You might not be bothered by it for some reason and buy it or wait for a sale, but if you’re looking for something more sincere and consensual in a relationship I recommend Dorakone and [from what I hear about] Please Be Happy. I also recommend Making Lovers and Sounds of Her Love.

Black Ops 1 is my favorite of the COD FPSes, but I understand the battle royale genre is a whole different type of breed.

I gave this incomplete game 6 months to get everything together and my review still stands: Just like Warzone 1, this is a mess of a battle royale game that is not enjoyable in the slightest. It boggles my mind how AAA game developers can still make unfinished products and send it out to market as though it’s ready to go. Even when Warzone is free, it’s not ready! The UI is a horrendous mess that makes navigating the menus a nightmare. And even though I appreciate the attention to detail on the firearms and equipment, the gunplay when using them feels as though it’s skewed against you, and the overall movement is okay at best. The footstep noises have improved since last Warzone, but it’s still maddeningly inconsistent. To make things worse, COD’s fast time-to-KO isn’t made for the battle royale genre, running from one empty space to the next, then getting your sights on an enemy you finally found only to get KOed then trying to make the attempt to get the 2nd chance match win, or else you’ll be waiting for another long minute or two or five for the next match. While there are some game modes like Resurgence that gives you a chance to get back into the fight much sooner, it still doesn’t stop that feeling that you’re being matched against the wrong players for the game.

Overall, if you are looking for a battle royale that’s at least good, if not better, than this, Apex Legends is a much better option. Want to step up your game with a phenomenal FPS? Please please PLEASE play Titanfall 2!!

BTW, even when Activision has committed a slew of horrendous, tone-deaf PR decisions in recent months, I’ll still say this: That awkward moment when COD Mobile’s Battle Royale mode is much better than Warzone 1 and 2 combined!

This is a phenomenal FPS! with a major league asterisk, which will be addressed in this review. [EDIT: They just fixed it!! Read below for more info.] It’s a type of game that satisfies both regular and movement shooter fans with a skill ceiling that can put anyone who can pull their weight into great heights. The gunplay and movement is really fun and satisfying and, although the time-to-KO is pretty quick, the overall gameplay mechanics, combined with the fact you’re not worrying about the closing ring from this game’s battle royale cousin, makes up for really satisfying moments even when you’re losing.

The single-player campaign’s “plot” is something Michael Bay would approve, but the relationship between the main character and the Titan AI “BT” more than makes up for it! And even on normal difficulty, the enemy AI is not something you want to mess around with, like the enemy AI from Crysis 1! They practically encourage you to make use of the game’s mechanics in order to accomplish your mission, as well as getting some giant robot action to break through most things that stand in your way!!

The multiplayer is also really fun. When you do get connected to a match (If you’re wondering why I typed this, please continue reading!!), You will have a really fun time duking it out in a frantic, but cohesive battlefield! While the types of players can vary, there is one thing that makes this game stand out when you play their regular team deathmatch mode in “Attrition”: Along with other players, you will also encounter AI soldiers, stalkers and late-game reapers, making it a pretty immersive experience down to getting to the dropship in the end! While you’re learning the ropes of this game, KOing these grunts contribute points to the team and makes you feel like you’re helping out. Just make sure you are aware of other players in the process! :P

EDIT: Just recently as of this edit, Respawn and/or EA FINALLY fixed the multiplayer connection issues! What has plagued this game for a long time is now gone and now we have smoother, much better connections to match the consistent player base. Getting matches is a breeze and, unless someone corrects me if I'm wrong, it looks like the game is trying out different types of game modes ala Halo series. If it's possible to get a compare button for the pilot and titan customization part that will be great, but thanks so much for fixing the problem!! This is something other companies big and small NEED to take note!

Original problem

And now comes the major asterisk behind this game: In recent years, there had been some DDOS attacks, making the servers unstable in the process. So far so good, I haven’t experienced any DDOS attacks mid-game, but I have encountered the occasional server disconnects, possibly as a result of the DDOS attacks. Fortunately, there is a video on how to reduce these issues which did work on my end:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDU8Y2QxGCM&ab_channel=Myx0

If you need to further protect yourself from the disconnects, here are some good fixes that can work for you. BTW, the EA app can work similarly in the Origin step in that later guide, with a great option to repair the program:

https://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2841884094

There is also a great mod known as the Northstar mod, which not only fixes these issues but also replaces matchmaking with a list of servers to join (e.g. classic Counterstrike series). While that sounds great on paper, in practice the player count is much lower compared to Vanilla and is highly variable depending on the time. Also, the servers that are available usually have situational rules, whether or not it will tamper the enjoyment of the game. Nevertheless, they also have a great community as well as a great guide if you need help, like how to add controller support for the mod. Even as a regular multiplayer fan, I recommend using the Viper program as it conveniently updates Northstar to the latest version.

Despite this situation, I’ve been having a blast at this game, even more so than its battle royale brother in Apex Legends. If you need a great FPS and/or wanting to take a break from Apex Legends, consider this a great buy, whether or not it’s on sale. Are you a fan of the movement shooter sub-genre? Even better! STAND BY FOR TITANFALL!!!!!

This would have been enjoyable if all the playable characters have a faster movement speed than a slow walk (Read: NOT JUST CHERRY!!!!!), the ability to roll, dodge and sprint and HITBOXES THAT HAVE ACTUAL X AND Y AXIS COVERAGE WHEN FACING THEIR OPPONENTS!!!! Combined with facing enemies that move and attack faster than you, can have super armor in too many situations and ridiculously situational enemy placements that begs you to lethargically dodge more than dole out attacks and you have a great chore on your hands. This is very surprising considering the music, sound effects when the action combos in and the near sketchbook-like art is appropriate for the theme of this game. The only time I had a good challenge without feeling like it's artificially hard is when I faced Estel. That boss is how a outstanding beat-em-up challenge should be and it makes me wish she's your first or second boss without that certain DIVA and her constant use of her unavoidable AOE attacks in the first stage...Yes, the first stage...Just...Why? Must the difficulty curve be this awkwardly handled like the overall gameplay?! >_<

Once you get the idea what key upgrades your ship needs, which route is most viable, what parts of your ship you need to seal off and which parts of the enemy ship you need to knock out, the replay value takes a massive dive. Otherwise, this is a great take on a rougelike strapped onto a real-time ship management strategy game. The visuals adds a nice touch to the spacey scenery and the way it emulates movement (especially when you warp into a different area) is genius. There is a lot of random encounters you will discover and every decision you make is vital and can make or break your overall journey to the final battle. The ambiance alone sets the mode in a great way. Not something I would by for full price, but it was a great experience while it lasted!

This is basically for those who love the concept of Ikaruga, but doesn’t want to be punished just because they used the wrong weapon. The overall gameplay, music and presentation, while a tad cluttered at times, is fantastic, and the futuristic Neo-Aztec and Mayan theme is a great standout! On the gameplay side, this game has a more nuanced rock-paper-scissors approach for their three-weapon system. Not only do you exact extra damage with the right elemental strength (In this game in a nutshell, blue beats green, green beats red and red beats blue!), you can also charge your super meter using the opposite element, albeit with normal damage (for example, you use the red missiles on the green enemies instead of the blue enemies). To regain your health, simply use the same-colored weapon on the same-colored enemy! The interface does a great job letting you know which weapon is effective against which enemy, as well as which will regain health or super meter, without taking up much of the screen. It may take some getting used to, but it does make for a deeper approach to playing the game.

But this is where I’ll need to be more objective on: This Shoot-em-up is not for everyone! It may be a more manageable Ikaruga, but combined with the fact that you REALLY need the three-weapon system for most of the game not only will the difficulty feel too high in later stages, even on easy mode, but said system can lead to difficult decisions in practice. For example, you want to recharge your super meter, but you are also low on health. That means for the long-term you’ll need to use the same-colored weapon on any same-colored enemies until you know you’re ready to use another weapon to either finish off enemies quickly or gradually charge the super meter…until you get hit and you’re back to square one. It gets even worse when the charge time is slower! Also, the game is seemingly short for a set of long stages without a continue, if not save system. As for the plot, it basically showcases what happens when you don’t have strong mental resistance and we don’t have the solutions to the problems that your pilot committed! It doesn’t make for a good, coherent storyline, even for such a short time. It makes Natsuki Chronicles’ incomplete plot that was trying too hard look like a masterpiece! XD

Overall, once again if you are looking for a more manageable Ikaruga, this is it! If you prefer a easier, yet still challenging, Shoot-em-up, I highly recommend Raging Blasters and Natsuki Chronicles. Want a great plot with your Shoot-em-up? Let’s wait for Tyrian to make a good translation into Steam and find out! :D

Imagine Tyrian created a Gradius game. That’s basically this game in a nutshell, and it’s done fantastically! The gameplay is frantic, yet satisfyingly challenging, has a great leveling system and controls, a difficulty curve that’s mostly correct and a good number of options to chose from. The music, graphics and overall presentation is clean, bright, riveting and everything else you expect from a Japanese video/arcade game from the early-to-mid 2000s, but modernized.

Like Tyrian, you can save your progress, purchase and customize your loadout from a plethora of weapons before you head out on the mission and, the most important thing of all (and to quote Ross’s Game Dungeon), YOU DON’T DIE IN ONE HIT!!!!! That’s right, your ship is equipped with a shield system that recharges over time and the game gives you the option to add additional, albeit non-rechargeable, shields when you level up your “Stage Study level” of the stage you’re tackling on. Not bad for improving yourself on a particular mission! Of course, that doesn’t stop this game from gradually getting harder in a near-bullet-hell style in the later missions, even on easy mode. Fortunately, you are also equipped with sidekicks that act as additional shields against most enemy shots (which can also be purchased (or this case, programmed) as various forms of defense, attack and guided version), and you can turn on bullet trajectory on the gameplay settings so you can plan out your movements a lot better while focusing on your target more! And like in both games, you do need to be aware of the in-game collision in this game, something the bullet trajectory option doesn't showcase for obvious reasons. Even worse, the final boss in his 2nd to final form/tier leaves you guessing as to which way he will swoop in and collide with you, wishing you are able to zoom out and see what’s going on.

If there’s any downsides to this game, the overall storyline is a type of shonen anime plot that’s trying too hard at best and incomplete at worst. Tyrian’s plot can be just as wacky in combination of its sometimes serious moments, but at least it’s complete and you are able to read it in between missions. That’s way better than trying to read and shoot at the same time, which is a huge no-no in concentration unless you love multitasking.

Anyways, there’s also an arcade mode if you like the classic style of taking on the game and the high score junkies out there will have a field day breaking those online leaderboards. Unlocking more credits for this mode is a huge plus as well!

Overall, along with Raging Blasters, this is a great Shoot-em-up to add to you own arsenal, even better when it’s on sale! Now when is Tyrian coming to Steam so I can try it out more? DX

Love to play a actual, classic Shoot-em-up on Steam without seeing your enemies dump way too much bullets for you to dodge instead? Are you new to the genre and looking for a game to jump into said genre? Then this is right up your alley! The overall gameplay is frantic, yet very enjoyable to play with a learning curve just right for the beginners and those who want to decompress. The enemy placements and bullet spread in relation to your ship's guns and overall activity provides enough of a good challenge, no matter the difficulty, and you can change the speed of your ship in case you need to move quicker or don't accidentally run into enemy fire. I love how it also gives you some time to prepare before you resume the game from the pause screen. The graphics are fantastic in its arcade-y retro style and you can have the option to add scanlines as well (although there is no option for you to rotate the monitor to maximize the size, but it's still visible!). You also have a wonderful soundtrack to boot! Overall, this is a definite buy for the Shoot-em-up genre!

BTW, if Tyrian makes a successful transition to the Steam platform, that Shoot-em-up will get my recommendations too!! :D

It pains me to give this game a thumbs down. You can tell the devs invested a lot of time and effort into this salute to the JRPGs of yore, as though it’s Chrono Cross wearing a Chrono Trigger suit working as the early Sega console games. The futuristic twist on the fantasy theme is very interesting, the pixel art is very well done and the movement and visual scaling is just right. Meanwhile, the music is fantastic and the combat system is highly enjoyable, the later offering more tactical aspects toward your usual combat routine. It’s also a great plus you can save your game and change your party members almost any time. The occasional humor is also a nice touch (e.g. The description for Chahn’s Shield Headband: “Protects your hair from any attack.”)!

And that’s where the not-so-good moments come to play…

The main hallmarks of a good RPG are a good plot, engaging characters and great overall writing that will keep you immersed throughout the story. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the plot feels like it was trying too hard (e.g. Xenogears, Phantom Breaker and even a few moments in Chrono Chross…), only the storyline feels shallow with writing that you wished it could have done better. Also, the overall pacing is inconsistent to the point where I was bored around the midway point of the game, while encountering moments where it seems the devs forgot to add a transitioning effect, even SOME sound effects and occasional effects filter, to make certain transitions less jarring. And because of the lackluster writing, the characters didn’t have any development save for a few moments in the story. It came to a point where it felt I was just moving characters from point A to point B, then simply watched the Youtube version of this game to skip through the combat and see what the story is all about.

Speaking of which, now that I mention pacing I forgot to mention the other side of the great combat system. While there are no annoying random encounters, the way the enemy encounters are formatted, even in relation to your level progression, makes you wish there are random encounters for you to grind for more XP. Even when you create your go-to party combinations and their “Rules of Engagement” for most encounters, it still takes much longer than necessary to defeat even the most basic of monsters in a particular area. In stronger encounters and boss battles, it comes to a point where you’re down to the wire when you could have finished that battle in a much shorter time. Not even lowering the difficulty makes the game faster!

Overall, if you really, REALLY need your JRPG fix, maybe a good sale will do? Otherwise, it disappoints me that I’m giving this a pass. Perhaps purchasing the OST is all you need.

But hey, at least there’s no unnecessarily situational puzzle levels I hear Cross Code has in abundance. I just wish there’s more Chahn in this game. She’s awesome!! :D
