The ships must be about 60% destroyed to sink (it counts all pieces broken with a +1 math counter until it hits a certain number) and once either of the two have started to sink the smaller boats on both sides are controllable.

I am glad you both enjoyed that era of gaming and my maps I appreciate hearing that.
