When people ask me what my favorite game is, I usually say Baldur's gate 2. The Baldur's gate games had a compelling story, interesting characters, great combat mechanics, dungeons to crawl, loot to find...mindflayers and dragons!

I'm a few hours in to BG3 and I've very impressed. The introduction to the story has been great. My companions are complex and not annoying. The new D&D rules take some getting used to, but I think I like them better. What I like most of all so far though are the 3D maps. There are few loading times between giant complex maps that offer lots to explore.

There's a few quirks I'd associate with an early access game, but they haven't gotten in the way of my enjoyment. In a cut scene where I am about to my assaulted by bandits, my character has a look on his face like he's just seen a funny movie. It's sort of an odd distraction I'm not sure I ever experienced in an RPG. My character just sometimes looks too happy. In one scene after discovering a dark and mysterious character, in a dark gloomy dungeon, with foreshadowing of future horrors...there is happy little medieval bard music playing in the background.

I'm very impressed so far. I almost never pay full price for AAA games and usually wait for them to go on sale. I hesitantly purchased BG3, but I am thrilled that I did.

This is the best single player FPS I have played in a long time. The idea of collecting upgrades, fetching materials and exploring an open world is a solid concept. However recently we've been asked to play games where part of the fun includes such trite activities as walking, waiting, or drinking water.

Doom gives us what we've desperately wanted. Blood pumping unforgiving challenges. No fetch quests and boring dialogue. Constant battle after batter...and its awesome.
