Starfield isn't a bad game per-se. I spent just shy of 90 hours with it. But it's Bethesda's worst game by far.

Technologically speaking, it's an improvement. Much larger environments, prettier graphics, less bugs, etc.

But the game itself is very shallow and feels almost designed by committee. Major game systems don't interact with each other and have no real impact on gameplay.

Right off the bat, the biggest issue with the game is the decision to spread everything out over multiple planets. The main problem is that this means you're required to fast-travel pretty much everywhere. No more wandering the wasteland or Tamriel and having adventures and discoveries along the way. Now you teleport from location to location with a chance of a random encounter in orbit (pirates, trade ship, etc).

Along with that, each planet suffers from the same problem No Man's Sky has (a game Starfield took a LOT of inspiration from), each planet is basically the same with only minor differences. Sure this one is purple and has lower gravity and that one has a few different types of trees and wildlife. But they all *feel* the same. Especially because each one has the same couple dozen POIs scattered at random.

This makes exploration largely meaningless unless you're looking for specific resources to enage with the crafting and outpost building systems. Unfortunately, crafting actually has less options than Fallout 4 and they feel less impactful. And outpost building, while having more options and functionality than FO4, is also less useful because the main function of them is to gather the resources to make more outposts.

You can easily buy what you need to for research/crafting from the stores, which is something you'll want to do because each vendor has so little money that it's the only way to sell all your loot without spending an inordinate time just waiting in a chair for them to respawn.

Then there's shipbuilding and combat. There's a lot of options for building your own ship (Reddit is full of examples of creative ship designs), but the interface is a nightmare to deal with (as befits Bethesda games) and given that the space combat is awful and how little time you spend in your ship (see previous fast travel point), it's one of those mechanics that there's to let you play around and be creative, but has zero impact on the game itself. If it was missing and you could only buy pre-built ships and upgrade their systems, the game would be no different.

There's also the usual Bethesda game tropes. NPCs who always stare directly into your soul when talking (in fact, the NPCs still look like they did 10 years ago, despite other advancements, these could be right out of Skyrim). Every NPC you get near either starts talking about plot/quest-related topics (even if you don't even look in their direction) or sounds like an animatronic at a theme park that is motion activated to give lore or banter.

The game's difficulty is all over the place too. Not just that your options are play on Normal where enemies die in one-two hits and you're largely invincible once you found a decent weapon and armor. Or play on Very Hard where the enemies might take 4-5 hits and you're either largely invincible or instantly killed. You'll also play through missions where one room is full of level 38 enemies followed by a room of level 6 enemies, and then some level 20s.

All and all, if you like Bethesda games, you won't have a bad time, but it doesn't have the longevity of Skyrim or Fallout 4. The constant fast-travel means you just don't get as immersed in the world. After doing a main/faction quest in the same dungeon for the 4th time in a row, with everything the same down to the placement of mines and your companion's quips, it just gets tiring.

This game should hit all my sweet spots, survival-ish exploration with base building and little plot to interrupt the free-form gameplay. Unfortunately this game is about as shallow as they come. There are lots of systems, but none of them have any depth.

The survival aspects are just constantly pick up Oxygen and other elements that pretty much every planet has in abundance every few hundred meters.

There's no exploration to speak of. Once you've landed on a couple of planets you seen them all. Any particular part of one planet is identical to the rest of the planet, and there's little variation between different planet types beyond "some drain your shields faster" and "some have storms that drain your shields even faster". All planets have the same buildings scattered at random with the same assortment of chests and points of interest sprinkled about. There's no point to fly around unless you're looking for a nice flat place to build your base because, unlike something like Minecraft, you'll never cross a mountain to find an amazing vista with waterfalls, a massive cave structure, or a lava pool. Every planet is the same except for its color palette. The only exception being the uninhabitable worlds which are still the same, they just lack buildings and POI.

The combat and flight sim mechanics are as basic as can be. No real tactical options beyond pausing to consume resources to recharge your shields.

Base building is OK, but there seem to be two or three different base building "systems" that don't play well together. For instance, items from one set won't snap to the other sets making it difficult to actually use all the parts. And there's no way to tell what will snap and what won't until you try it.

And if you do try to follow the plot, it's pretty flimsy and is mainly an excuse to force the player to go to different planets and systems.

And as the new major patches come out, all that is released is more shallow systems that are quickly exhausted of content. Never any depth to the existing ones.

There was potential here, but the developers tried to do too much and so achieved very little. There are some beautiful moments, but a few good screenshots aren't worth the almost mobile-game like aspects of the experience.

I'd say this game would be good for, or playing with, a young child (like 7-11 or so), but adults will quickly run out of things to do.

It's a beautiful game with lots of potential, but currently hampered by a rather bland gameplay loop. The world feels empty with civilians disappearing if you turn your back too long, a traffic AI that constantly gets into traffic jams because it doesn't understand how to drive, and plenty of large beautifully detailed buildings that you can't go into (or if you can, only one room is actually open).

And none of that is counting the numerous bugs, inconsistent voice acting (the voices themselves are good, just given bad direction like having shouting back and forth during stealth sections 10 feet from enemies), and poor skill balancing

I plan on coming back in a couple of months, but right now it's just too unfinished to hold my interest.
