It's not a bad game but some of the design decisions are quite simply appalling.
Autosave on death with one save file per game. Ludicrous.
Bruce the shark and pretty much most of the enemy combat mechanics are quite simply the worst conceived ideas in recorded history. The worst aspect of the entire game is fighting enemies.
The raft idea, the crafting and the exploring is OK for sure and I enjoyed that but there is so much here that simply sucks. I honestly don't know how they justify some of the insanity they sent live in this game.
I bought this game way back when it first came out in EA, Finally sucked up the will to struggle through the story, got to the last boss fight in the game and died. Not hard to do when you meeting it for the first time. Autosaved on my death and I just left the game with me dead on the ground. Simply cannot be bothered trying again. Used up my supplies, don't have more handy. Not worth the effort.

If you are into self harm then go for it as there are some good things here but for me they are outweighed by the bad.

Yep. It has a few quirks still being tweaked by the dev who is super responsive and willing to listen. Refreshing change to some of the arrogance you see from devs these days.

There is a lot to figure out, it has a decent level of complexity and a moderately steep learning curve. Some aspects could use a little clarity but that's all coming I expect since the dev has just patched out a lot of the things that would have made it on this list. Still a few things though but it's generally OK.

All I really have to say is that I enjoyed it a lot. I recommend it based on all the positive things I found in the game and the sure knowledge that the few things I still think need work are getting worked on as I type. It's eminently doable as it is now and only going to get better with more dev loving.

I feel that I got value for money and fully intend to play another run through on a higher difficulty soon.

Just be aware it is EA and it is still in development and there are still a couple of glitches. Usually simple things that a save/load gets rid of but they do exist. Standard EA warning. It's not perfect but it is awesome.

Thanks for a cool game Mr Developer and double thanks for answering my questions and fixing a few QoL issues I had. Excellent stuff.

It's free and you can do an awful lot for free if you want.
I think it will appeal to the younger, more modern crowd though and while I do recommend it because I enjoy much of it there are a lot of super annoying features that just make me want to quit sometimes. Nobody cares about the good things though so here's the not so good.
This is my last while in my last play session, it went roughly like this.
Go to repair a gun, find out you need parts. Make parts. Fix gun.
Eat
Eat
Eat
Play a mission with 5 forced cut scenes.
Replay that mission over again 4 times to get all the required bits and redo the same cut scenes over and over again every single time. You can't skip them.
Health status stim
Health status stim
Health status stim
Repair my other gun (You equip two)
Make ammo
Craft food
Buy components food.
Craft food
Check web for a recipe for a new quest food.
Realise the game is annoying to the extreme at times.
Start a main story mission
Endure more pointless cut scenes.
And more cutscenes.
And still more cutscenes. But you can skip much of this.
Finish the entire story mission which is entirely cut scenes.
Fight in a real mission.
Shoot one enemy dead.
Reload.
Shoot one enemy dead.
Reload.
Ad infinitum till you gotta refill ammo.
Find out the game has defaulted your ammo to a health pack again as you heal yourself instead. This is constantly happening now and I don't know why.
Finish mission.
Do a cross server team match and have 3 people stand at zone in the entire time and do nothing at all while you solo a team mission. Joy. Can't leave cross server matches. More joy. Gotta be a bug or I somehow randomed 3 losers.

You get the idea?

There is good but seriously the thing these devs have truly excelled at is implementing the most number of annoying features possible into one game. Fully half the game is stuffing around trying to sort yourself out so you can actually do something fun.

Do it if you are into fights that are almost always going to push your limits.
I don't recall more than a handful of fights at almost any level that were easy. Every one is pretty much hand crafted to suit your expected strength and the skills/abilities you should have unlocked at that time.

Some might say the world is a bit empty and yeah there is some space between encounters for sure. There are also teleporters so it's not so bad. Fights when they happen are sometimes pretty intense so a little space between encounters can be a good thing. If it was entirely packed solid nobody would ever finish the game.

Don't do it if you need to grind out enemies so you can overpower your way through later content. There is maybe one opportunity to even moderately do this and it's easy to miss.

For all it is an 'open world' and you can wander into places and enemies that will squish you like a bug it is also semi linear in that there is only really a few places at any one time you can fight and expect to win so you will need to look around for those fights and try to avoid the ones that hurt. You can do some stuff 'out of order' but you are generally steered into the right places through quests and tougher areas usually have gatekeeper fights that will keep you out till you go to the right places and level up enough.

Main quest and some side quests. A few secrets and a modest amount of hidden chests to find. Not an overwhelming amount but enough.

Gold was hard to find early on but at later stages is plentiful. Early game it's probably one of the things that hold you back the most so spend wisely. There are some things you don't strictly need to buy straight away. Keep that in mind.

It's good. The price point had me a little worried at first but it proved itself a solid investment in the end @84 hours to finish but I tend to explore everywhere so others may do it faster.

Dev is great. Like most he has his own agenda but will listen and act very quickly on bugs and QoL features.

I say do it if you want a challenge.

It's fun.
It's nothing really new in any way. No great surprises. Pretty standard game mechanics for this genre of game. It is however something new and although in it's early stages it promises to have quite a large world to explore.

I will make a few points to help people deciding to buy this game but it is EA so things may change for better or worse.

It's not hardcore. You do not have permadeath of your characters.
You get up to 6 characters to control in your team. I recommend getting one of each 'class' as they all have something special you will want at this point in development. There are more classes planned and you can branch your mage for example into two paths wizard or warlock or multiclass if you choose. Classes are fairly standard fare.
Not every feature you might want is currently in the game. No quest log or journal yet for example and a more elaborate tutorial at the start might be nice but even so it's not incredibly complex and if you take the time to look at all your tabs there is nothing surprising there. I have not seen any respec option. Maps don't have PoI labels and little things like that. Maybe later but not just now. Even so it's not incredibly hard to get around.
Combat is Ok but although it is mouse friendly it uses the mouse to navigate a UI you could easily imagine being intended for keyboard only. Anyone who plays these games a lot knows what I mean. No idea about controller. Maybe Steam can map yours to suit? Maybe it works. Never tried.
Enemies are visible in the game world and often you can skirt around them unlike some games where enemies are invisible and you just walk into them totally clueless. Encounters have semi random quantities of enemies and usually have one or two different types. Anything from one to eight enemies per encounter. Bosses are so far dungeon only and not on the world map.
Lots of secret areas. Lots. Lots of switches and locked door 'puzzles' and stuff in dungeons.
Modest number of secondary quests with a main story as well.
Not sure what my play time is just at this point. I have done some wandering around that is probably a bit more than strictly necessary and I have almost finished current content I think so my hours at the time of this post should give you an idea of what is here right this minute. Apparently it's barely the start and approx 50 hours is the expected length eventually.
Graphics are what they are. It's not UE5. It's also not important to me but might be to some.

The dev is actively fixing bugs very quickly. Like within hours of posting a bug type quickly.
The dev is willing to listen to player input.

Overall it's fun. It's EA and I think for it's potential it's worth the price. I have paid more for less but if you are someone who is going to moan about 8 hours of content for xx $ then just save us all the bother and wait till more comes out.

I have enjoyed it so far. I enjoy exploring new worlds. It's not a punishing game but it does have some fights that will wreck you if you underestimate them. Thumbs up from me.

I had to put a downvote because I can't play it so I can't give it a good review. My PC simply cannot run this thing even at minimum settings. It's fine for every other game to date I have ever played and my graphics card is a near new AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT (20Gig) but I don't think my somewhat older CPU can cope. My SSD is too full to fit this on so I had to put it on a normal disk drive.
So it's a refund from me sadly and a warning to anyone who doesn't have a brand new beast PC that you too might fail to run it. Sometimes it was full speed and then it would be 5 frames per minute. Oh well.

Years ago I stopped playing because of the threat of the wipe. A wipe I saw as pointless for the very reasons they ended up removing the launch wipe for.
Years ago I also commented on several game mechanics that really needed attention. These game mechanics that have been addressed in other games because they are patently flawed are still in this game and the Steam mod just puts the blame on me and locks the thread.

While there is a lot of content and in essence it is a fun game albeit with very primitive graphics the few flaws it does have are pretty bad.

Chain agro in dungeons and even some open world places is ludicrous. You can tag one enemy and end up with over a dozen as it calls a friend, who calls a friend, who calls their friends, who calls respawns you couldn't possible predict into a monstrous mess. If you want to do level appropriate content you should expect to die because you need to be able to take down 10 at once in any area you are in or you will die to something you cannot do anything about.... except avoid entirely I guess.
Monsters returning to their spawn point after being trained by people will agro you on their way home. Awesome. Something that was always possible but is worse since the introduction of mounts.
Chain stun. Not real sure how this mechanic works but when you get swarmed you can spend a great deal of time stunned. Probably mob specific but chain stun is something that is usually dealt with in other games as it's not a good thing.
--- There are aspects of the above that players can do things to try to mitigate to an extent but it doesn't address the underlying issue that these flaws are not necessary and are easily addressed --- This next one though I don't know there is anything that any player can do anything about.
When you zone into an area it is not uncommon for there to be enemies waiting for you. Not a huge issue in a game revolving around combat you would imagine. You should be ready when you zone. Yeah? Well no because the game will spawn you into the game world while you are still in the loading screen on your PC. So by the time you actually see the environment and gain control of your character you can in fact be quite dead.

This is not a case of 'Git gud'. This is a case of flawed game mechanics and this review is in direct response to having my thread on their Steam forum locked by the moderator with one of the lamest responses I have ever read. One that totally avoided commenting on my actual question(s).

95% of this game is good. 95% of this game is dependant on the players skill and knowledge but it's the 5% you can do absolutely nothing about, that will just kill you out of hand for no good reason, that lets it down. It's been like this for years and I really don't understand how it hasn't been dealt with. A game that can just kill it's players through things that are easy enough to deal with by the devs is not a game I would recommend.

Is there any current player, fan or otherwise who disagrees with my fundamental comments on the mechanics I believe to be flawed? I like so much of this game but it just arbitrarily and conversely systematically kills you.

Yep.

It's quite deceptively simple with an underlying complexity that is totally optional. By this I mean that there are many 'parts' to the game but it is entirely possible to succeed even if you ignore some of those parts. But they are there if you want them and make things even better. Guilds, relations, upgrading towns etc are all optional really as you can just do simple trades and combat and go very well too.

Some of the grammar and choice of wording is somewhat odd and may be a translation thing but it's not unbearably bad, just a little noticeable at times for those who are overly aware of those types of things. Still pretty good though and quite interpret-able.

I am only finishing the third area and don't know where the game is going but even if it's just more of the same it's keeping me happy. And I am not easy to please. It's not a fast game and gets a little grindy upgrading your team but better players could probably do things quicker and advance faster than I am managing to,

Worth a try I feel and I am happy with it so far.

There is a lot of good things in this game but wow is there some absolute garbage.

Movement is appalling. (Walking speed limitations like going so, so slowly in camp, orientation/turning is woeful etc)
Much of the game is basically on rails. For example often your character/horse seems to steer itself and jump obstacles for you and other times you will faceplant because you didn't jump a fence that the game decided you needed to when you didn't need to manually jump the previous 2 fences. Wierd.
If you don't love cutscenes then don't do it. Unfortunately I despise cutscenes and times where control is taken from me so it was probably only a matter of time till I had enough of this. I don't get why people think games with an identity crisis that think they are interactive movies are any good. If I want a movie I will watch a movie.
If you don't like having control of your character taken from you at random times by random NPC's walking up to you and waffling nonsense then don't do it.
If you don't want to purchase items while browsing the catalogue (shop) apparently at random then don't do it. (This was the last straw for me)
If you expect to find traders at their shops then don't do it as they randomly are not there. Probably some logic to it but whatever.
When you call your horse to you in the game world it's just so incredibly slow and stops literally miles away from you..... unless you whistle for it while you are driving a wagon at which point it will gallop straight in front of you and cause a 3 horse pile-up ruining everything. Joy.

Ultimately it's an incredibly slow game where you will spend the bulk of your time travelling and the rest grinding tediously for any actual progress.

It looks great and has so many good things going for it and I want to love it but I cannot. It's just straight up awkward with some bonkers design decisions.

Oh well I got it on sale and after 24 hours played I feel I got my moneys worth. I may revisit it if I cannot find a substitute but in the end it turns out I am just NOT enjoying it right now.

Yep.
It has a few glitches for sure. Nothing game breaking so far for me though.

I am not into level scaling enemies as a rule and early on this can really make life a little tricky but once you have some level appropriate gear and some idea what you are doing it becomes much less of an issue.
I only play normal as I am not into self harming so I guess harder modes might differ but on normal it settles down around level 6 with all blue quality gear. Just ensure you have the best level weapons at all times and try for any elemental damage modifiers as a few of those will seriously overpower you.

Hitboxes for melee aren't great.

No minimap but the levels are either very linear or very simple (At least the first three areas have been) so it's not such a big deal. Some areas are quite complex for a minimap to portray accurately in that they have vertical regions in them so minimaps for those are nearly always tricky. I have not needed one so far but if they could manage one it would be cool

Needs shared storage between all characters on your account but generally loot is not hard to obtain so again, it's an issue but doesn't ruin the game.

I thoroughly recommend a rogue. I am really enjoying mine so far. Easiest character to use and very versatile. Great skills and suitability plus huge damage output. If you are struggling for any reason try one before you rage quit.

It's one of those games that doesn't start to shine till a few hours in. Once you get the hang of things. If you can push through the learning phase and the initial struggle it's quite well done and a lot of fun. Huge maps. Huge.
