Early Access Review
It can be a bit frustrating at times. Unmodded, it's tough. Modded, it's still tough, but you can really dig into the weeds to tweak variables and craft a difficulty curve more suited to your skill level, or, just make it incredibly random and unpredictable.

When it comes to the base game, I have to admit, it's getting better. It's getting better all the time.

One of the main selling points for this game is how dedicated the devs are to improving the game. This is a perfect example of a development team who truly cares about the experiences of the players who are funding them. So many QoL mods in the workshop have been integrated into the various builds by the developers that it really feels like they listen to feedback, and take tangible actions to address it.

It's not for everyone. Zombies are frightening. I understand that. If you find them frightening it's probably not the game for you. Also, if you're easily frightened by well timed violin stings, this game can really freak you out. What else.... well.. I mean... it's just kind of hard, and annoying, and RNG can really make you mad sometimes. Ummm... what else... Oh, even decent above average PCs will have FPS issues if the Zed population is set to normal. And, you can pretty much forget about exploring Louisville, or other larger cityscapes unless you have the Zed-words population set to low, because the games a bit of a hog.

Tech issues, and phobia related problems aside, the game is fun, challenging, and allows you to get creative in the kitchen, the garage, or the workshop. They are adding new crafting recipes fairly regularly, and implementing new features, and QoL stuff at a fairly steady rate. Plus, it has multi-player, which it didn't have for the longest time.

Cook yourself up some salmon, and peanut butter stir-fry with hot sauce and bouillon, have a sitdown in front of the old Tele, and read a book about generators. You'll be building yourself a sweet apocalypse stronghold before you know it. Just don't get bit... or scratched... or cut...

The game crashes around 2.2 million bounty. That being said, I rather enjoy the journey.

Look... Are there better RTS games out there? Sure. Sure there are. But, for some reason, this one keeps calling me back. I suppose I like it in spite of the linear storytelling. It is generally historical, to the extent that a video game can be, which doesn't really lend toward a non-linear experience. I don't know. There's something here that is very good.

I suppose the recommendation I have is as follows:
1. If you like real time strategy, this one is pretty good. 8/10
2. If you like historical content, this one is pretty good. 7/10
3. If you like fielding rather massive armies against an opposing rather massive army, this one is pretty good. 9/10
4. If you like rotating the camera to get different/better views of the battlefield, this one is really, very bad. 0/10
5. If you like having variety in your army composition, this one is better than most. 9/10

Basically, this is the best Civil War strategy video game I have played. For transparencies sake, I have played only 2 Civil War strategy video games, and I've enjoyed them both, but this one is better. Thank you.

It's just meh. Not terrible. Maybe 5.5/10. It may have gotten a 6/10, but a majority of the voice-acting was American accents, or bad British accents. Nothing sounds less natural than someone with an American accent using British slang. The game also gets fairly boring pretty fast. At one point I came across a very young boy who had lost his father, but his character model looked like a man in his 30's. It was very unsettling. I had high hopes. Unless you're a huge fan of Robin Hood, or you're just a fan of jank/bad games, I would steer clear. If you can get it for.... I don't know... like 5 bucks, it might be worth the experience.

The cutscenes are pretty stylish.

Is it perfect? No, no it's not.

Is it playable? Absolutely.

Here's the thing... As far as Bethesda is concerned, this is the most "finished" project they've released since Morrowind. All things considered, I'm extremely pleased with my experience so far. There have been a handful of crashes in the time I've been playing, but they learned their lesson in regards to autosaves since the launch of Skyrim, so it hasn't been too much of a headache when the game does occasionally (very) close without warning. There are also a fair few glitches that crop up every once in awhile, but nothing game breaking (so far), and usually can be fixed fairly easily.

Graphically, I can't really comment because my system isn't capable of maxing anything out, but on medium settings for most things, it looks fine. There are occasional FPS hiccups, but even in a rather large and complicated city like Neon, I haven't had any major issues.

I absolutely love the music. It's very reminiscent of Star Wars, and it really suits what you're seeing on the screen for the most part. It's unobtrusive when you're just exploring a planet, and it's very much obtrusive when you're walking through sort of nightlife areas in big cities.

The gameplay is very good when compared to other Bethesda games, which is to say.... fairly average when compared to non Bethesda exploration/loot and shoot games. Knowing the companies pedigree in regards to gameplay, this title may in fact be their best so far.

The ship customization is pretty insane. Every time I thought I had reached the end of optional modules for my ships, I've discovered an upgrade path that unlocks even more parts, bits, and bobs to add to my ships. It's truly overwhelming at first, but rather simple snap, and place construction takes some of the pressure off. That being said, when it comes to planet base, or house customization, the controls for placing objects inside a building are way too sensitive. Fallout 4 had much more precise base building controls, and it begs the question of why that system wasn't integrated into this game. Seriously... try placing a piece of furniture flush against a wall. It's maddening. If there's an easier way, please somebody tell me.

For all the things that I've been enjoying about the game, there are quite a few things that annoy me as well.

Why can't I view my companions equipped gear, and compare new gear to what they are currently wearing?

Why is my walk speed so much slower than every NPC making it look ridiculous when I'm trying to follow them at a walking pace to an objective?

Why is there no "move all" option for each item category when you're shifting equipment around, or buying/selling things?

Why isn't there clearer information on gear to indicate environmental protections? Simply having a number next to Thermal doesn't indicate to me what temperature ranges I can safely endure, and it's pretty frustrating to have found gear with 25 thermal protection but still get frostbite, or horrific burns when I haven't seen anything (so far) with higher ratings than that. Same goes for the other environmental protections. I just don't understand what the number values correlate to, and, to be honest, have just gutted out hostile planets with meds anyway. Although, it would be nice if I had any idea when my protections were sufficient.

There are other little issues that occasionally come up, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. I'll add to the list as they come up, if anyone cares.

Overall, it's a very good game by most standards, and I would say it's GOTY potential if you take into account how poorly Bethesda games have performed at launch in the past. This is one of the best AAA titles on launch day in years, and that's saying a lot considering how rocky Bethesda has been on launch days over the last 15 years or so. It's truly a fun, and interesting, and vast game, and I haven't even ventured outside of the core 10 or so systems yet.

I absolutely recommend it, and I don't even have to tell you to "wait for a patch." It's ready to go now, and it can only get better with updates.

I don't hate it. I just can't recommend it outside of a sale.

The first I ever heard of this game had me cautiously optimistic. I like XCom.... A lot. Enough to own it, and it's baby brother, and all of their step-siblings. I want to like this game, but I just... can't. It's like your best friends little brother. He should be as cool as your best friend... maybe even better in some regards, but instead he's a slightly annoying hybrid. He has some of the qualities of your buddy, but they're not as refined, and they try way too hard to be relevant (Sorry, Jesse). There are a lot of things in this game that are similar to XCom, but they're watered down, and they don't work quite right.

The concept is fantastic.

The execution is terrible.

The music is good to excellent.

The gameplay is average.

The graphics are decent.

The story is average.

The overall experience feels very rushed.

There are some humorous graphical anomalies that I enjoyed making fun of.

Overall, I would say 5/10. If you can get it for less than 5 bucks, it might be worth your time. Any more than that, and you're wasting your money, but... it's your money, so do with it what you will.

I have, so far, enjoyed this game. The mechanics are solid, and I've always been a fan this style of turn based strategy/RPG games.

I haven't gotten far enough along to really dig into the story, or develop my characters much, but that's not due to a lack of interest.

The problem that I'm having is that this game crashes pretty frequently. I don't think it's my computer causing it, but I could be wrong about that.

If, and when, any stability issues have been worked out, either by the developer, or by me, I will change my recommendation to yes.

As of right now, I don't know many people that would be willing to restart their computers to advance the plot for 45 minutes or so before restarting again.
