This game has grown on me a TON since playing it. At first I hated it but was a stubborn ♥♥♥♥ and slogged through 30 hours of misery. After that it was really good and that's not the Stockholm syndrome talking (I think). It follows the reverse Bethesda/elder scrolls formula where the side quests are ♥♥♥♥ asf, but the mainquest story is actually good?!?! (plot twist)

I want to make love to Dagoth-Ur

coming from someone who liked resident evil 4 but didn't understand why everyone put it in such high regards I gotta say this game is... alright.

What this has told me is that this formula of horror is definitely just not for me. First off, anytime in a horror game my character has a gun any horror aspect is completely lost, as I instantly have no fear. While I don't think the aim of this as well as resident evil 4 was to scare over all else, I always see that game touted as the best horror game so I will judge this one in the same light. While it may seem unfair to continuously place this game in re4's shadow, you have to understand just how similar these games are. In fact, the second chapter feels like a straight rip off of the beginning to re4, when Leon first enters the village. It was at this point I was tempted to drop this game as I figured it would have no original ideas to share.
Boy was I wrong big time! (not really)
But I stuck it out because I am dumb and put too much trust into others, and it ended up being a pleasant surprise and is actually better than re4?!?! (not clickbait). Let me go ahead and elaborate before I get a pipe bomb in my mail.

To start, as I stated earlier the horror is non existent (all though it does make for cool spooky aesthetic). And just like resident evil it has that same ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 3rd person every-enemy-is-a-bullet-sponge-even-the-generic-zombies-who-finds-this-fun-combat. So what does make it better? the nonexistent reader interjects. Well that my friend would be the super difficult task of having a decent actually cohesive story. I'm sorry RE fans, its story is a godawful mess, I genuinely cannot get anything out of it. With the Evil Within, while the story isn't amazing by any means (and definitely has some major issues) it at least is interesting, and has a fair bit of good developments and effective foreshadowing unlike Re4 which feels like it is being held together by Elmer's glue and Popsicle sticks. I wish I could say it made up for the games other shortcomings however the major issue I stated before holds it back just a bit too much. That is the games dialogue. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do these characters have the worst writing. I swear every interaction between characters is a total of 2 sentences and sound as if they were talking to different people that they couldn't really here so ended up playing safe with a vague generic response to everything. Seriously this killed my immersion that these characters could be real people and really just felt as though they were set pieces to create conflict and advance the plot. So all in all, the gun-play is no good, there is no horror in the horror game, and the story while interesting is held back by stiff dialogue, so why exactly am I still recommending it?
The reason is the dlc.

While it seems a bit ridiculous to say this saves the game, as it would be like saying "yeah this car was a complete waste but those bumper stickers I bought separately really made the 30 year payment plan worth it" but I don't really care, Its what changed my outlook on the game as a whole.
First off "The assignment" and "The Consequence" do wonders for the story.
they fill in all the gaps and give great context to events that weren't well presented in the base game.
AND FINALLY THE PEOPLE ACTUALLY TALK LIKE PEOPLE THANK GOD.
also the game puts a bigger emphasis on stealth by stripping you of your weapons forcing you to play a bit more methodically. This actually does wonders for the horror, while still not scary by any means its a big up.
(The main monster is also the creepiest, and best designed of the game but I wont spoil it here)
I am convinced that there was a new director or writer or genius on board as the changes in quality feel so drastic (but I am to lazy to check this).
Moving on to the last dlc "The executioner", instead of improving the main story, we see huge improvements to the combat formula. You actually play as one of the monsters of the series, and as a result are able to absolutely annihilate enemies, throwing them in the air, at each other, or into conveniently placed spikes. It gives a good sense of weight to all your attacks and feels how I first would've imagined what it would be like to control a big daddy from bioshock before bioschock 2 crushed all of my dreams. And while it doesn't seem to be the focus, with zero voice actors the story ends up being a really sweet, wholesome tale and honestly would make for a solid standalone indie game.

So yeah, base game is aight, but I would never reccomend playing it on its own. The dlc's complete this game.
All in all its not bad.
Still not really for me though.

To start, this is probably my favorite horror game and one that I don't find particularly scary. At least not in the traditional sense. The encounters while unnerving, never really made me anxious like those in other games similar to this one. However, that is not why I love it. What makes this game special is pretty much every other aspect. The underwater setting, the characters, the story and lore. All our very well fleshed out, stuff that isn't too common within the state of modern day horror in video games. One aspect however, takes this game to the next level, and that's its focus on existentialist horror. I'm a bit biased, as I find this type to scare me the most, and also is the most fun to think about, its what lets this game stick with me after all this time (There is also a healthy splash of body horror which is a nice touch). You should play SOMA and you will remember it.

Pretty cool. Master difficulty was not as hard as all the stalker fans lead on...

After 21 hours I have beaten Elder Scrolls Arena. I'm glad I did, however, I feel a bit conflicted on it as a whole. On one hand it has a very cool atmosphere as a 90's dungeon crawler and it really is charming. On the other hand it is frustrating. VERY frustrating. For example, I built my character as a Breton knight. Not only did I have access to plate armor (highest armor class) and had it at ebony no less, I also had natural magic resistance, maxxed attribute skills, and a slight exploit to boost my armor stats a bit higher. EVEN THEN I would still get one shot by the ridiculous mage ghosts who just machine gun out fireballs like they were trying to cash out of bitcoin after a slight drop. I can't even BEGIN to imagine how painful this was for someone with less protection or god forbid weakness to magic. Thankfully magic users like this only appear late in the game but still very annoying. As for the early game, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I set out to collect the Ogmha infinnium a handful of times to boost my stats to a place I liked (I highly recommend you do the same if you play as it offers a ludicrous +50 stat points every time you collect it), and I liked the sense of progress I was making. I also worked my way up to a full set of ebony gear and topped off the loadout with the necromancers amulet, which unintentionally stacks with regular amulets (the aforementioned minor exploit). After this though my engagement with the game definitely declined. The main quest dungeons are handcrafted and pretty neat, however do get repetitive and I admit to eventually blazing through them as quickly as possible by using passwall to cut through walls and shortcut to the exits. Final boss was a bit annoying but the cheesy animated cutscene makes up for it (also a fair amount of 90's amv for those that are into it).

All in all, I give this game a WhydidIevenplaythisIcould'vejustplayedDaggefall out of 10

This review is the worst thing I have written, but simply too goated to delete. Enjoy!

This is it. My favorite game.
I cant write all my feelings for this game here because I lack the attention span to do so but I will try my best to sum it up.
This game has one of the best stories in any game I have ever played. Despite looking the way it does which might be off putting for some still gets you invested in the world and characters. Speaking of the characters they are amazing. The companions all are filled with so much personality and most even have character arcs that you are able to help them go through by following their questlines. The music is something so special aswell. I do not listen to country or cowboy type music however something about how great the rest of the game is allows me to fall in love with these songs. Even when the radio is off the soundtrack of the game still manages to send chills through my body. Especially the ending slides track which gives a sensation of reaching a goal you had been striving for, but was what I did really the right choice? The morality of the game is another really interesting thing as there is no right choice. Unlike fallout 4 ( which I am so grateful to for making me go back and play New vegas) where all outcomes are pretty good choices, you have Fallout NV which gives all of their factions flaws making it feel not only more realistic but also making the world that much more complex. The dlcs though are what I think truly make this game. I played the game all the way through without dlcs first then bought them and replayed the game as a basically the same character. Oh my god are they so amazing. The base game has characters talk about these important influential characters that are never seen and only learned about through dialogue. I cant say how cool of an experience it was to see the burned man or father Elijah in person. Each of the dlcs are absolute slappers (best order to play them btw) first with: Honest hearts- takes place in Zion with amazing characters and a great setting Dead Money- the best one that has left a huge impact on me, it has an amazing atmosphere and gives me a feeling I dont know what to call Its sad but in a way I like? anyways the soundtrack in this one is top notch and please play it, it may not be that good while playing it gameplay wise but the feelings you are left with after just make you want to return and soak the amazing story and everything in it all over again. Old world blues- Is really good I love traveling around its location and like that it covers some harsh things through a fun lighthearted goofy story. Lonesome road- Tbh I did this one really dirty. I played like half of it while in a voice call (dont do that with NV it completely ruins the experience) and because of that was not able to get fully immersed with the story. I really do want to go back as what I did play I thought was really cool however still prob the weakest still great tho also my opinion for that one does not count. This was a horrible ramble and I cant type out how I feel very well so sorry about that but just trust me, this game is worth experiencing. I wanted to make this mess of a review in hopes of convincing one person that hasnt given it a fair chance. I was in your situation once. I came to nv right after beating fo4 and played halfway through the story thought it was bad, dropped it, came back to it and fell in love. Have a goodnight and I am here reminding you that you're nobody 'til somebody loves you. And that somebody is me. I love you
