Can't recommend the game in its current state, especially for new players looking to get this when it goes on sale. If you've never played this game before and want to get good at the game just by playing online, you're too late. Online games consistently lag out or de-sync due to the awful netcode. Most players are from Russia and Germany now for some reason, which would be fine if every match wasn't 250+ ping because of it. The only matches you can find are in the rooms, the 1v1 ranked and unranked matchmaking outside the rooms simply doesn't work. This means that newcomers miss out on skins locked behind ranked 1v1s, since you can't search for ranked games in rooms.

I've never seen the amount of players on the game go above 30. It's all the same people, and they're all high level. Apart from the occasional newcomer that shows up, having to fight against level 70s. The online rooms are full of some really good players that always end up disappointing me with their toxicity. It's not hard to let a level 8 have a good fight that doesn't involve a tbag and fatality after every match.

If you want to play the game with friends, I recommend playing a private game, either a 1v1, or a KOTH if you have multiple friends. There's a 3v3 gamemode you can do which is pretty fun with friends, it uses round-robin matchups so you can all fight eachother by the end of the game. Test Your Luck is really fun sometimes, I've cried laughing while playing with friends. Just avoid the online rooms at all costs if you want to have fun. Unless hosting a private game doesn't work, or you're actually good at the game and you like winning.

Note: KOTH lobbies in the online rooms are notorious for lagging out. If one person leaves or lags out, there's a high chance the entire lobby gets disconnected. Trying to join the lobby you lagged out of usually doesn't work, so you have to re-host the KOTH lobby to get you back in the game. Pain in the ass. Host a private game.

Offline fights against bots gets old fast. The bots read your inputs and you won't get a hit on them if their difficulty is above Normal and sometimes Hard. If they're below Normal, they're way too easy and stand there waiting for you to hit them. Good for practicing combos I guess.

Story mode is good. I liked the story a lot, I'm sure you will too. You get some pretty cool skins for completing it 100%. There's some QTEs in there too, which makes it the only MK game that has them in the story. Introduces you to new characters and it's a good way to get started in the game. Highly recommended.

Don't get me wrong, MKX is a good game. It's just plagued with either toxic or high level players that you'll have no chance against if you haven't played the game for a long time. If you've got friends, play this game together, it's damn fun. This game is so much harder to play than MK11, and a lot less beginner friendly. I personally hate MK11, but if you want to pick up and play Mortal Kombat online and actually have a chance against people, this game isn't a good choice. If you're feeling brave, grind the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game and git gud, then you'll possibly have fun online.

*Oh, and they massively increased the file size (20 GB or so) in a forced update, just so they could add banner ads for MK11. Seriously?

Personally, I didn't like the decision to break up character moves into variations. It didn't feel like 3 unique characters per character; more like the normal skill set is just divided by 3. Raiden doesn't have teleport in two of his abilities? C'mon. I never really bothered trying to learn all the different characters' move sets because it's just excessive, and there's not even that much variation in variations.

By contrast, in MK9 I started on medium, moved on to hard, and even got good enough to have fun beating the hardest difficulty. I bought the game a few years before MK11 came out, and even then online had mostly high-level players and few noobs. Now that MK11 is out (and has been for a while) online is pretty much a ghost town. Which is sad for a game barely 5/6 years old. But whereas MK9 is endlessly fun even purely offline, MKX, other than the story, isn't in my opinion.

Good review. MKX has a great campaign mode (underrated compared to the love for MK9) and lots of characters, especially MKXL. Unfortunately, the singleplayer ladder is not very fun. Like you said, anything below medium (and frankly medium is included in this) is too easy, but then Hard and higher gets unfairly hard. You will struggle to get one hit in, and every time they hit you, you're bombarded with a lengthy combo juggle that deals a ton of damage. I could never get good enough to effectively play the Hard ladder.
