There is something about the swarm of rats in A Plague Tale: Requiem that I feel completely sums up my feelings about the game. There is the devastation that they cause symbolizing the oppressive nature of the story, the sheer spectacle of the rats that symbolizes the technical achievements of the game, as well as the gnashing of teeth and skittering of feet that sells the music and sound design of the game. If I wanted to stretch the analogy, I could also say something like the fleas that the rats probably have symbolizes the bugs in the game, but I would never dream of saying such a thing.

A Plague Tale: Requiem picks up a short few months after A Plague Tale: Innocence with the de Rune family trying to make the most of a terrible situation. You begin the story with life on the road as Amicia, the dutiful protector and central playable character, her younger brother Hugo who is cursed with a fatal blood disease that just so happens to be causing hordes of rats to wreak havoc upon the world, their friend Lucas who knows all the best alchemy tricks as well as their mother who still clings a little too close to an ancient order that believes there might be a solution to Hugo’s affliction. The story moves from locale to locale as they attempt to keep Hugo alive, picking up newcomers to the series like Arnaud and Sophia. All these characters are fully fleshed out and watching their character arcs unfold is an enjoyable time. Things never stay happy and chipper for long as the story is supremely depressing at times. Just when happiness seems to be found in a new town, the rats inevitably show up and crash the party. And as is the case with most things in life, humans also are throwing a wrench in the works with their desire to bend the rats to their will rather than ensuring everyone’s survival.

The gameplay mostly follows in the steps of the first game, where you would be wise to take a stealthy approach with enemies. Sneaking around can genuinely be a heart-pounding experience, especially when rats start showing up during these encounters. The rats fear the light, so utilizing tools to put out flames that might be sheltering an enemy soldier is not only brutal to watch but is fun to pull off. You can certainly go aggro though and come out swinging at the enemy if being a sneaky snake isn’t your thing. Returning from the first game is the sling and entering the fray is the crossbow, which you can then combine with different elements like fire, smoke, or a stinky substance that the rats are attracted to. This offers a lot of different ways to approach a situation and the game will reward you in whatever way you choose by giving experience in three different skill trees that advance with how you handled the encounter. I like this style of progression as it does offer a fair bit of replay or encouragement to switch things up if there is a skill you are trying to get. There are some collectibles to gather as well, which do offer up some engaging conversations between the characters.

It is clear that the developers, Asobo, had a story that they wanted to tell, and they saw that vision through, for better or worse. My playthrough came in at just under 16 hours, and in that time, I did see some motifs and story elements repeat. Thankfully though the characters and the unfolding story are engaging enough to keep pushing through those moments when the game feels a little long in the tooth. The tragic story does reach a very nice resolution, though there is a little teaser after the credits that dangles a direction future games could go. The absolute star of the show is Amicia, who has some of the best and most believable voice acting that I have heard in some time. The passion with which her lines are delivered makes the love for her brother so authentic and elevates things to even more heartbreaking levels.

As horrific as some of the events in the game are, the visuals and technical feats that the game pulls off are impressive, to say the least. There are quiet moments where you are allowed to take in the beauty of the French landscapes, which are nicely juxtaposed with the terrifying sea of rats. The number of rats that can be on screen is something to be seen, there were moments where I got goosebumps with just how liquid the rat’s movement was and watching them rolling over people to leave only bones behind never got old. For a game that isn’t coming from a AAA developer, the graphical prowess on display is something to be commended. Another thing to be celebrated is the sound design and the music. The sound of the rats bursting from the ground, consuming a body, and then skittering around complements the horrifying visuals so well. Coupled with a soundtrack that feels like it could have come right out of Midsommar, the game does a great job at never really letting you feel too comfortable.

As mentioned earlier, the game is a little longer than it needs to be. A couple of chapters could have been cut for the sake of pacing, but thankfully it is easily overlooked. A few things that are hard to overlook however are the bugs in the current state of the game. At one point I was swarmed by rats and died, but when the checkpoint reloaded it kept me in that swarm, forcing me to restart the entire chapter. At another point when attempting to get a collectible, the characters completely froze and would not trigger their conversation, again forcing a chapter restart. The performance of the game was usually running very well, but there were some inexplicable moments of sluggish framerates. Hopefully, these bugs can be patched soon as they aren’t foundational elements of the game.

If you are a fan of the first game, it’s a no-brainer to play this. It is more of what made that great and wraps up the de Rune family saga. If you didn’t play the first game, it might be a harder sell as the narrative does lean heavily on the events of the first game, but a synopsis might work well enough if you want to dive in. I am excited to see what Asobo cooks up next as they are proving their strengths in crafting an engaging story with stellar visuals without an exorbitant first-party budget.
