I've been playing this game since early 2014. After all these years it is still in Alpha, but that shouldn't discourage you! It's a very ambitious project and regularly gets large content updates. The developers maintain a forum on their website where you can discuss the game, and frequently give informal commentary on new features on their YouTube channel. I can say that I'm very proud of this game and how far it has come since its inception. There is an endless supply of prefabricated dungeons, procedural world generation, and a lot of options to make the player's experience unique.

Keep in mind that you will encounter performance issues on low-end systems, and even medium spec systems may have to lower the graphics all the way to avoid frame drops. If you have a good gaming PC, however, expect excellent graphics - especially for an indie game of this size.

There are many custom servers and Workshop mods to chose from, all for free. This game has no micro-transactions or DLC, and is well worth the purchase. While the building is modular, it's not entirely voxel, and terrain smoothing lets you create some very beautiful buildings. For creative builders, there's hundreds of block variants to choose from and painting allows you to re-texture anything you want.

If you're more into tech, there are several different vehicles and many clothing and weapon modifications. Most interestingly, however, there is an electricity system that allows players to run generators, lights, motion detectors, alarms, and a variety of automated zombie defense systems.

Finally, I should probably note that there are a lot of bad reviews out there. The game can be brutal, even on default settings. A lot of people play on custom servers and complain about things not working in PvP or at the highest level of gameplay. Things do change a lot and most of the people who are upset are upset because too much was changed in the last patch. What I can say, is that I've been playing with groups of friends on our own custom servers where we adjust the XP gain, day times, loot abundance, and zombie behavior to suit a very casual playstyle. If you want to play the game for fun and a challenge, I would recommend not playing solo and finding a server or creating your own that fits your playstyle. Normal or low XP gain and loot abundance can lead to an un-ending cycle of death for new players. Give the zombies the ability to run as fast as the player on top of that, and I can see why many people quit. Look at a server's settings before you join it or create your own before you get beaten down by the negativity of veteran players and high difficulty.

I've enjoyed many sleepless nights in 7 Days to Die, fighting, scavenging, building, and memeing with friends and I cannot recommend it enough. It truly is one of my favorite games on Steam.

Hilarious. Annoying. Challenging.

This game is very fairly priced and deserves every bit of praise it gets. (A LOT)
11/10 would sacrifice the guide to a giant flesh monster again.

Despite the large amount of negative reviews, I can say that Starbound is one of the most enjoyable games I have played in recent years. I think too many people try to write this off as a Terraria or Edge of Space copy but it really is not. As a huge fan of other popular block-based sandbox games such as Terraria and Minecraft, I can say that this game, while not perfect, definitely has some unique features that add a new level of depth to the old "Build and Survive" formula. The gameplay is decent and the random-gen planets definitely add nice variety to the same boring single-world exploration found in similar games. While singleplayer is decent, you can't really get the full effect of the game unless you are playing with a friend. I bought the game when it was in Alpha and played it for awhile but quickly became bored trying to survive all alone. After the latest version came out, I have started playing it again and have realized how fun it can really be. By far, I have been most impressed with the artstyle, music and story. While the content of the game is growing, I would like to see advanced AI, bigger cities and a more in-depth story line. However, my biggest criticism of this game is its length. While it is a sandbox game with no end, there are simply not enough missions to do and the fun can run out quickly unless you are with a friend. Also, every time a major update is released your character data may be wiped. This is quite annoying, but it gives you a chance to start over and experience the new content. If you buy this game just be aware that it is an early access game and may have many bugs. Even if you buy Starbound and don't like it, always check back after the next major update with some friends and see what has changed. I recommend this game to anyone who is fan of sandbox games and I hope that it will only get better in the future.

An intense puzzle game that incorporates strategy and an amazing plot! The decisions you make can affect the ending and I'd recommend it to anyone! But remember, choose wisely and have fun jumping out of perfectly good windows!

To keep this brief, here are the main facts you need to understand before making the decision to pick up this game:
  • The game was largely abandoned by the developers in 2017.

  • TF2 currently has no full time developers - only two known guys who fix bugs a few times a year.

  • Huge gameplay bugs still exist from the last time the game saw active development in 2017 (see Pyro's flamethrower). Since no one changes gameplay anymore, these will likely persist indefinitely.

  • The game was not designed to be competitive. The original devs tried to pander to the competitive market in 2016, upending the entire method by which the game was meant to be played. The problems persist to this day.

  • Since 2020, you have to pay money to communicate in TEAM Fortress 2. Every possible method of communication is unavailable to you beyond basic body language.

  • Exploiters are rewarded (see Crate Depression of 2019)

  • Item botting in the tens of thousands is allowed. As you can imagine, the currency inflation caused by this is similar to that of the Weimar Republic.

  • Cheating is allowed. Whether you DDoS official servers, use cheating software on your main account for fun, or use virtual machines to deploy hundreds of cheater bots to wipe out entire servers, you will find no consequences here.

  • Despite all of this, Valve makes millions of dollars by buying low-quality churned-out content from the same few people on the Steam Workshop for a fraction of the price and re-selling the designs back to the players through gambling.

  • No amount of interviews or protests have ever been able to affect an actionable response from Valve.
If you've read this far, thank you. I have played TF2 in some capacity since 2011, longer than some of its players have been alive. Despite this, I can assure you, I am still terrible at the game compared to my peers. However, I cannot even begin to imagine how long I have studied this game's design and its people - and yet there are countless people who have played longer and understand it better than I.

Coming back to my review after many years, I felt I should change it to better reflect the current state of the game. The best way I can describe it is "abandon all hope, ye who enter here." The Valve that you thought you understood as the revolutionary juggernauts who built this website and changed gaming for a generation, no longer exists. They have multiple live service games and CANNOT handle any of them.

What has happened here is the logical course for all Valve titles. You should expect the same issues to appear in Deadlock. Do not support them.
