As a big fan of Dwarf Fortress and other colony/city management games, RimWorld scratches all the right itches. The dynamic relationships of each colonist can either lead to some hilarious interactions or to the doom of your settlement. Thanks to the adjustable difficulty and event generation, you can play RimWorld as challenging or relaxed as you want.

The modding community is also incredible and can add a LOT of depth and complexity. If you're new to the genre, I recommend playing without mods at first to get accustomed to the event generation and to not be overwhelmed by additional micromanagement and production. However, after getting a grasp on things, mods will expand the replayability tenfold.

This game is beautiful, emotional, and incredibly sobering. Although you don't make choices like you did in Stanley Parable, this game isn't so much about exploring the levels as the player; it's about being exposed to the realities of the struggles some people go through and how they cope with those obstacles. For some, it's having a creative outlet that may not be meant to be shown to others. They were intended, from the beginning, to simply be created and then put away forever.

The Beginner's Guide will take you on a journey through the games created by someone Davey knew and his interpretation of what those games meant and, ultimately, what they say about the creator.

This should have been a patch for Cities XL. The only difference is a slightly different UI color. They also claim that it improves performance, but I highly doubt it. I regretted my purcahse and am thankful that Steam Support refunded my purchase.

If you want a good city building game, you won't find it here. Cities: Skyrlines (NOT BY THE SAME DEVELOPERS DESPITE THE NAME) is what you want. It's made by the same people who made the Cities in Motion games (Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive) is the true city building masterpiece.

Good music and beautiful space vistas are the strongest aspects of X Rebirth. Unfortunately, that's where the "good" ends and the "bad" begins.

Despite all of the bugs and glitches (which have mostly been addressed in the 2.0 update), there are fundamental flaws in the basic game design. The X series has been well known for its deep economy and combat systems. X Rebirth took most of that away. The X series has been touted for providing a large universe to explore and secrets to discover. X Rebirth took most of that away. The X series has been a staple in the space simulation genre for its meticulous attention to detail and giving the player immense amounts of freedom. X Rebirth took most of that away.

As you can see, X Rebirth is a mostly step backwards rather than a revisitation--or "rebirth"--of the series. I purchased the game on release day and have been regretting it ever since.

The biggest flaw that stood out near the time of release is the fact that you are limited to a single ship; to make matters worse they called it the "Albion Skunk", a ship that was once known for its prowess (and went by a different name) but was later found in ruins and scrapped. Having only one pilotable ship should have been the first sign to me that this game would never live up to expectations. Because of this limitation, major mechanics that are considered "norms" for the genre, like trading, are handled by pilots you hire who can fly other ships. This limits you to focusing almost completely on combat. There are a handful of missions you can run, but they mostly consist of bounty hunting.

One of the key aspects that was announced before the game released was the ability to step out of the cockpit and walk around stations. The concept was fantastic and it has rarely been done in the space sim genre. Sadly, X Rebirth failed to make that as exciting and innovative as it was made to seem. There are basically two types of interiors that you'll see. Every station uses one of those two layouts and tried to make them unique by blocking off certain sections for each station. It's fun and interesting to walk through the stations the first few times, but it quickly becomes frustrating when you have to go through a maze of corridors to get to your destination to talk to a vendor or mission contact. Additionally, the stations are almost completely devoid of life. There are maybe 20 people in any given station, and all of them stay in the exact same spot and do absolutely nothing. Which leads me to my next point...

Character design is terrible! Other than the few key characters in the tutorial campaign (such as Yisha, your copilot), every other person you see is just a copy. There are maybe four unique character designs: human male, human female, and roughly two alien humanoid species. They are then copied and pasted throughout the stations.

There are many other examples of poor design and rushed development that I could continue to list (such as terrible UI, bad voice acting, etc.), but I think my message is fairly clear already. X Rebirth essentially attempted to make the X series more streamlined and accessible, but it seems like their answer for that was to make the game more casual-friendly by ditching fundamental space-sim mechanics and to change the focus on the series and genre completely (You don't even have 6 degrees of freedom! Everything has an UPWARD orientation which makes absolutely ZERO sense in space!).

However, X Rebirth doesn't fail completely. There are a few things that stand out and are worth mentioning. As I stated earlier, the music is good and the space backdrops are gorgeous. Additionally, activity outside of the stations actually makes the areas feel populated. Each stations will have hundreds of ships flying around, traffic heading in and out of docking bays, police ships scanning and chasing criminals, military cruisers fending off attackers... There is no lack of visual fidelity when it comes to the station exteriors.

Unfortunately, the few things that X Rebirth does right are too few. With the space sim genre coming back to fruition with games like Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen in development, it's very, very difficult to recommend or praise X Rebirth.

This is a fantastic rendition of a traditional Roguelike! The art style is beautiful, the combat is fun, and the Roguelike elements are pure and well implemented. At the time of this writing, Delver is an Early Access title. I do hope that the developer expands upon the existing game, although the current build is a fairly solid Roguelike. I think it would be nice for there to be more variety in the environments and enemies as you decend through each level of the dungeon.

As a lifelong fan of Roguelikes, I can safely say that Delver is a great example of the genre. I have been following the development of this game since it was first announced and before it made its way to Steam. I am quite happy with how it has eveolved over time. I look forward to seeing what future updates bring to this game.

I have generally been a fan of non-game interactive stories such as Dear Esther, but Gone Home just doesn't do it for me. I think there is too much of a disconnect between the "gameplay" and the story. The interactive portion is akin to a horror adventure game (Amnesia comes to mind). You are coming home after being out of the country for some time. Upon arrival, you find that nobody is home and the house has a slight eeriness to it. Lights flicker, there's rain and thunder, you are all alone... It's a perfect setup for a creepy adventure. But this is highly contrasted by the story. The story is provided as pieces of a journal that you discover as you walk around and explore the empty house. Without giving too many spoilers, the story is about a teenage romance. Right from this moment, you can probably see my confusion with the non-game: Horror-like environment and gameplay, romance story. It just doesn't fit together. In fact, I would go as far to say that Gone Home doesn't quite know what it wants to be. With that being said, I wouldn't exactly shun Gone Home completely. I think it might be worth picking up if you happen to stumble upon it during a sale, but I don't think it's worth the $20 it's asking for. There are much better non-game interactive stories to experience: The Stanley Parable and Dear Esther are just a couple that come to mind.

If you like Roguelikes, this game is for you. If you like spaceships, this game is for you. If you like a challenge with a hint of strategy, this game is for you. Faster Than Light is simple and straight to the point, but it's impressively complex and full of depth, like every Rogulike should be. To be honest, I had almost forgotten about every other game when I started playing FTL. However, I may be biased towards this game because of my deep-seated love for Rogelikes and Sci-Fi games, but I would highly recommend this game to everyone, even if you are unfamiliar with the Roguelike paradigm.

This game is awesome! It's slow-paced, extremely in-depth, and combines some of the best elements from games like EVE Online and the Civilization games. If you like turn-based strategy games and spaceships, Endless Space is what you may be looking for!

As a fan of the games since before The Elder Scrolls became a popular series, I highly recommend Skyrim. The fifth game in the series has improved immensely over the previous titles in many ways and has even made it easier for newcomers to the series or RPG's in general to enjoy the large, intricate world in which you can do WHATever you want, WHENever you want, and HOWever you want. So what are you waiting for? There be dragons to slay!!
