I admit to originally having a negative review and outright not recommending people this game originally since, for me, it became no where near as fun as at launch. However, Arrowhead is making changes. They actually reversed a lot of their bad "balancing" decisions turning the game into a Mil-Sim-Lite and are actually making the game back into what it was advertised: A co-op horde shooter with overpowered weapons against unstoppable odds. This is only one series of patches though, so I am holding a cautiously optimistic candle they keep this trend going.

TLDR;
Game is painfully average, but it's not recommended because Bethesda team is being a bunch of doo-doo heads here on Steam, on Twitter/X, and basically anywhere else they can be heard because their feelings are hurt that people think their game is painfully average.

The actual "review":
This game is whelming. Mid. With the pack. Among peers. Prefers to be called Ed as opposed to their birth name of Edward but not anything "cooler" like Eddy. Buy only on discount and when the modding kit finally comes out in early 2024 so you can mod it up to be worthwhile.

Take a look at my hours and you can see I put my time into the game. I found nearly all the side missions I cared to do, and was as satisfied by them as a hungry man is on a McD's kids meal and went "that was a mission. well, time to do the next one." I did the outpost content, and every time I would begin to think about what I'm having for lunch/dinner instead. The main story is to the point I felt like it was just there to give me a push to do other content with my story-gained powers more than actually care to put time into the main story, since it's incredibly boring. One great example is they place the Freestar Rangers' sidequest opening right smack dab where you need to go for a part of the main story, and I ended up doing the entire Rangers' storyline and only after was it done did I even go "oh right I guess I should go do that main quest now," because I genuinely enjoyed that side content more than I did the entire main storyline start-to-finish. This is not a testament to the Rangers' quest being interesting (it's average), it's a testament to how boring the main quest is.

It's a genuinely alright game in its own right, but the issue is the creator of this game is Bethesda Game Studios, the creators of Elder Scrolls, the latest Fallouts (barring New Vegas), etc. So needless to say it's really lackluster for such a painfully average game to come out of a studio with such pedigree and making claims this new IP would be genre defining. All it ended up defining was a spot in my steam library that I will occasionally touch once every so often when really cool mods come out for it.

Basically it's on mod life support after your first time through the story. Don't be too disheartened though if you do pick up this title; Bethesda games are very well known for having a huge modding community so there's bound to be some mods that tickle your fancy.

But Green, why do you not recommend this game?
I honestly wasn't even planning on making a review solely because of how I mentioned this game is so average, so really I can neither recommend nor not recommend it solely on its own merits. But then Bethesda bit the onion and actually started replying to negative reviews (emphasis here on negative reviews; I have yet to see any mention of them commenting on positive reviews let alone seen it for myself) in a condescending manner that you can see for yourself through the negative tab. Then their lead writer/developer(!) is over on Twitter (currently known as X) making a fool of themselves. Then big name modders are outright stating they will not touch Starfield anymore, no doubt Bethesda's actions weighing in on that decision. It really does not paint a very good outlook about the future of this game and its player-to-dev communication if the company's team is allowed to show such open contempt for their playerbase, and veteran modders are treating this title as a lost cause. I really don't know what is going on over in Bethesda, but they really need to get their act together else the goodwill will further erode.

If you grabbed a copy of Battlefield 1942 off the shelf at a store way back when, begging your mother to buy it for you, just know this is the game that your brain was making mental images of what it would look and be like at the time.

It's like a nostalgia trip but without the disappointment at the end that it's long gone. Because it's right here in Easy Red 2.

This game is evil. You think you're just getting a ton of guns and other miscellaneous dood-dadds to mess around with in VR in multiple gamemodes, but you are quickly mistaken upon your 7th day of owning this game. For you see, you are the proud owner of a game that never stops updating because its dev wants you to have even more guns and dood-dadds to mess around with in even more game modes. Anton Hand doesn't stop, therefore, you don't stop. You don't leave VR, you just take minor breaks to nourish and revitalize the mortal coil that you currently possess so that you may then go back into H3, of which by that point, there is probably yet another new thing that Anton has made. There is no "doing everything" this game has to offer because the game won't stop offering.

Welcome to the gun buffet. Doors lock from the outside.

Who put this under the "Story Rich" tag?

Edit: If anyone is actually reading this anymore in the glorious decade of the New 20s, know that this game is only worth it on sale solely thanks to the modding community. I would only recommend it for pretty much only that reason.

This is like the story of the Cheerleader, the Sporty Chick, and the Bookworm Gal on a first glimpse.

Everyone flocks to the Cheerleader, because she's out there and famous and known around school, and always tries to be better known for her awesome attitude and spirit.
Everyone enjoys Sporty Chick because she's cool, one of the guys, and knows how to do stuff right so she never tries to do anything new.
Everyone tolerates the Bookworm because she's great at being normal, and being average, all the while trying to work to better perfect her arts.

Now how about a deeper glance at this trio?
Cheerleader, aging over, realizes she just isn't miss popular anymore, and is now recognized for her mistakes and flaws. She doesn't age well and cries for whatever attention she can get from a dying crowd.
Sporty Chick lacks any good skills at anything past what she already has been doing for years. When she tries anything new, they tend to flop.
Bookworm, however, ages just the same, and improves upon herself later. She excels at what she does and goes on fixing what's not working in her life, and improving anything that does.

Now let's call Cheerleader Dead Island, Sporty Chick as Dead Rising, and Bookworm as No More Room In Hell. From there I really have no idea how they relate, but let's just pretend they do and accept this is a great game.

Killing Floor 2 Beta is more stable than the two latest Call of Duty & Battlefield titles.
Killing Floor 2 Beta is more packed with features than the Sims 4.
Killing Floor 2 Beta is more gorey than Wolfenstein, and that game is made on gore (and nazis).
Killing Floor 2 Beta is more true to original than Tropico is at replicating itself.
Killing Floor 2 Beta is more beautiful than any Ubisoft title this year thus far.

Killing Floor 2 is in Beta and is still a better game than the Triple AAA field.

Needless to say, I question life a lot now.
