I don't care about the performance of the game unlike the majority of the negative comments. My complaints are entirely gameplay related.

1. Can't build rail bridges over ship routes in rivers/lakes. The developers had almost a year to fix this.
2. Game randomly crashes. No mods installed.
3. Simulation isn't what it used to be in Cities Skylines 1.
4. No steam workshop. Why not?
5. Tons of features in CS 1 that were cut out of CS 2. Too many to name.

Best train simulator on Steam, and not only that, but it fully supports VR.

I realize that I played this game for 1001 hours, though in Geek Time that is just 9 hours. While the game is supposed to simulate human effects on an ecosystem, I think most of us play it because it's just a great blocky game with a lot of interesting stuff that happens behind the scenes, and the system of laws that players can vote on creates a unique playing experience.

The character leveling progression is what causes servers to become deserted after a few days. There is little reward for those who spend more time than others actively playing the game because of this time-based leveling system built into the game. This leads to some people buying several copies of the game just to play it - maybe that is great for revenue generation, but I don't think that is the intended way to play the game.

Now for the positive parts of the game, there is the classic Minecraft style appeal and player owned houses appeal to the game, along with a great amount of work needed to dig up all the iron in the desert and grasslands to make the necessary quality of life improvements over the course of the server game world and to be able to successfully defeat the meteor within the game world.

The game is a great way to demonstrate why monetary financial policy is an important thing and why free market traded currencies are better and safer than relying on a single dictated currency.

This game is great, and by that, I don't need to wear a red ballcap and host large rallies to show you why it's great, but you can just buy the game and see for yourself just how great it is, and it really is great. I built a wall around my jungle property to keep the stags out and I made the treasury pay for it.

Astroneer is a simple space game with low poly to enable lower end systems to run the game smoothly. The worlds are procedurally generated and for the most part, I haven't discovered a large amount of game breaking bugs. The game runs well on multiplayer, however if I could make a suggestion - include a textual progress to show us the downloading of the multiplayer world file so we're not looking at a frozen loading bar and assuming that we lost connection or something went wrong. That loading bar for multiplayer will go half way and then get stuck in position until the entire world map is downloaded.

On another aspect, the game's Official Discord server is completely full of spam, which is encouraged because people are rewarded based on how much they post to the chat rooms rather than on the contextual quality of what they're writing. Many people like myself went there looking for information on the game, and gave up and joined the trolls who are there because, basically, the discord is completely full of useless chatter. To add insult to injury, the worst spammers are allowed to continue doing this over and over, while someone who might have a minor disagreement with a moderator are banned outright on the spot. While I understand it's a private company and this gives them the right to act like this, it's unethical and farther enforces my belief that there is no ethics in business. However, I will not leave a negative review over the choice of one moderator. The game is an absolute marvel and I am looking forward to its continued development process.

Dawn of Man is the perfect top leadership or political macroeconomics simulator where you get to be in the Prime Minister's, President's, or Dictator's seat and make the major decisions about how to grow your colony. One small mistake will have a cascading effect years into the future, causing mass starvation deaths of your people or livestock, and finally, the game is a great way to simulate the critical effects of opportunity cost.

The game forces you to make the major decisions rather than just micromanaging individuals, and allowing the AI to determine what to do within budget constraints (item limits from the F4 screen). If you tell your people to make more swords and spears, the opportunity cost of not producing more sickles means that when the Fall season comes, you won't collect enough grain to keep your population fed, and, you will have some merciless consequences later on from mass starvation.

In the late game with over 150 population, the biggest challenge is juggling priorities. You want to get over 100 grain and 100 straw harvested in the Fall, while at the same time you also need to mass grind the grain into flour, but not overproduce flour because of its spoilage time. You need enough ovens or campfires to cook bread at a fast enough pace to keep up with the people consuming them, but not too much because overproduction leads to spoilage of course, and spoilage leads to loss of harvested grain.

The task system changes everything. Keep in mind that hunting or capturing animals far away, moving megaliths, chopping trees farther away, mining/collecting ores/flint/stone, raider attacks, building repair, seeding & harvesting, citizens going to huts to eat and going to get a drink/pray, active crafting, are all things that generate tasks. Even with priority set to grain farms, it's entirely possible that your whole task queue is so full that even the prioritized items don't quite make it to the top of the list.

Lastly, don't forget that if you want most of your citizens harvesting grain in the Fall, you need to have a sickle for each person that you expect to harvest that grain, so you may need 50-80 sickles if you expect to survive with a large population.

This DLC is pretty nice, you can set up toll booths in series like a capitalistic dictator and make the simizens pay through their nose before entering your city from the outside. It does actually work. 2 euros per toll booth by 10 toll booths in series one after another, and you've got yourself a nice 20 euro toll just for every personal vehicle and 40 euros for each commercial vehicle that comes into the city. It's totally the Capitalists' American Dream --- for the mayor, that is.

BACKGROUND

I haven't played this game much since I bought it more than 2 years ago. However, the Game has been made with a focus on realism in a way that allows immersion to see what a battle might be like during the 18th Century. Gameplay style is much like EVE Online in a sense that most ships are Player-Made and require enormous amounts of expensive resources, and those ships are lost in battle permanently when destroyed. The other resemblance from EVE Online is that there's no single best ship; All ships are useful in combat situations, while the more expensive ships have a stronger attack and stronger hull.

PRICE/QUALITY

The pricing for the Game matches that of a typical Console Game, although the price may change if the game turns towards a Microtransaction Model (very likely). In my opinion, the value of what you're getting for the price is specifically in the in-game instanced battles, which includes controlling a sailing ship in varying weather, firing cannons at your enemies with the help of friends and faction members, boarding enemy ships and battling against enemy crew, and most of all, being able to capture the ships afterward and loot the items stored within their hulls. While the Game does have some extensive amount of crafting, I think most people will not be too enthusiastic about the crafting.

GAMEPLAY

Game Mechanics are mostly present during battles only, at this point in time. The Game UI is in the process of being changed to become more user friendly and visually appealing, but currently the vast majority of complaints about the game are about this User Interface. Icons for items consist purely of text instead of a graphical representation, for example. Buttons don't appear to pop out when hovering the mouse cursor over them, nor appear to push in when clicked on, which makes the UI feel as if it were made prior to the 21st Century, however a valid counter argument could be to say that the deprecation of the UI matches the deprecation of the ships in the Game. Either way, we know that a new user interface is on its way.

FUTURE

While most multiplayer games on Steam are hosted by players or dedicated private servers, Naval Action is an MMO hosted by the Developing Team. This means that your progress in the Game will be safe and should ensure the long term future survival of the Game. Public servers are also a great way to enjoy the game without 3rd party modifications and without allowing widespread abuse and easy access of Endgame Content by private hosts.

The Game is actively updated years after release, giving a sense of developer support for the Game's projected future.

This game is worth buying, mostly because it has official servers and can be played like an MMO. This means that you won't have admin abuse on the main servers as you will have in some other multiplayer games such as Rust.

The atmosphere and gameplay is much like Rust. Your body stays in the game when you logout, you place beds down to set your respawn point, and PVP is allowed everywhere. Bases can be built, but don't expect them to last. As a primarily builder-only player, I took a different turn and decided to participate in griefing with this game, so I have spent some time attacking bases while their occupants were offline. For those who enjoy reading comments from disgruntled raided players, this game is definitely not short of angry comments in Global Chat when people find out what happens with all their eggs in one basket - with breakable walls protecting their items. In terms of balance, it's faster to raid bases to collect some resources rather than trying to collect them the traditional way; and, in the process, you can takeover the base that someone spent days building.

Keep in mind that this review reflects the game as at July 10, 2017, and the game could have been changed after this date, which would result in different observations. The following pros and cons are based only on the game as of the date at which this review was posted.

Pros:

-Good sized map to give you a chance without being caught by someone.
-Fewer crashes than some other Alpha or Pre-Alpha games.
-Resources can be tedious to collect, so raided bases often cause much drama in Global Chat when the occupants login to find their base partially destroyed, taken over, and/or looted completely.
-Team building and team work. One end-game boss fight that provides access to higher level content.

Cons:

-Many bugs in the game, but the game is still fairly playable.
-Low numbers on the servers. Could be fixed by limiting the game to one US server and one EU server, which would force people to fight rather than bail when they see the resources fenced off. (People complained that US-2 had some resources blocked off, so they came to US-1. The purpose of the game isn't to be idle on the beach, but to fight for the resources. People seem to want the easy route, which is to avoid griefers and PVP to play in a "carebear" fashion.)
-Like most online games, people prefer to play solo, and it can be difficult to keep a stable group together. That can also be a benefit to those who raid small solo bases. However, for a game like this one, having a team of players is really important to building a large, defendable base.
-No cursor for aiming. It's more realistic without the cursor, but people will just cheat and put up an overlay that handles the aiming for them.
-Item duplication is an example of a well-abused bug in the game, but the developers aren't too concerned with it at the moment.
-Old unused bases clutter up the map and take a long time to destroy with even the best weapon in the game, the Crown Club. This causes extra lag as the server has to send you information on every entity in the area you are in. (Big Hint: if your screen lags when you are walking along, that's an indication of a chest with plenty of items in it nearby.)
-Items that are behind walls can be destroyed if they are within range of your attack. Items placed inside huts seem to be safe from this. This also means that people can loot boxes that are behind walls, and shoot arrows through walls. This could be intended, but I've still listed it as a con.
-There's no opportunity to avoid killing teammates if you would like to have several people attacking a gate all at once. The most you can have is two people attacking the sides of the gate and even then, if one person moves too close they will get hit by their friend.
-Stamina regeneration is a very crucial feature in the game, and it seems to be tied with internet connectivity. It's also client-side instead of server-side, meaning that someone could make a 3rd party program to provide themselves with unlimited stamina.
-Many of the items in game are not fully implemented. For example, the special masks that require the pitch resource have no tangible function and shields don't have bonuses nor block any attacks.
-Combining stacks of items often causes the entire inventory to disappear or act in a strange way. It's caused by bad pointer management in programming, where when you delete a memory address and then try to reference it later when that address could have been written to by something else in the program, you get some funky stuff happening. To fix the problem, you need to add to the second stack before deleting the first one. Don't try to copy the first stack after it's deleted from memory or you'll have these kinds of problems. Memory management in programming. You should always think in your head of what the program is doing as it goes through each line of code. Contrary to the "experts", all languages work procedurally like in the C language. All OOP does is it allows you to do is jump to different functions, but every function is still read one line after another just like in the C language. You need to read the code like a book. What's the next line of code going to accomplish? In this case, you referenced a memory address that may not exist. This is also why the bug is random and does not occur all the time. Sometimes that old address is null or not null, but it exists, and other times it's deleted, so it doesn't exist and that can cause some fairly major problems in the game, in terms of making items magically disappear and then re-appear later after a server restart. The problem is also server-side, not client-side.

The Long Dark is another type of game with original ideas. Much of the emphasis in the game is placed on survivability in a climate comparable to that of rural Manitoba during the winter season.

Having lived a primarily rural life, I am biased towards stating that this game is not an accurate simulation of outdoor survival in the Canadian winters. However, the basic principles of survival are simulated to an extent that the game is playable with a level of challenge that would not be present if it were to be a more accurate survival simulation.

For example, ever since lighters were invented, the younger generations of people in rural areas have replaced the use of matches with lighters, because lighters last longer, take up a smaller space than a comparable set of matches, produce a more reliable fire-starting flame, and if they run out of fluid, the spark-creating material in them is flint and steel, so they double as an ignition source and an accelerant all in one. Why they have been excluded from the game is beyond me, but I'm assuming that they would remove some of the challenge surrounding outdoor survival and perhaps make it less interesting for the city folk to enjoy.

I'm recommending this game because it's a unique piece of art and deserves to be played, even if you are like me and you know it's not accurate.

Pros:

- Operates on lower-end hardware & very stable.

- 100% original content. Not copied from other games.

Cons:

- No multiplayer/co-operative play.

Factorio is a stellar, first-class game for simulating factory automation and production, and more importantly, a very original creation. While most games are based from the same ideas borrowed from other successful games, Factorio is developed with all original ideas from yet another group of very talented programmers in Eastern Europe.

While the graphics aren't the main attraction in this game, they are basic and functional in order to play the game. The intensity of the graphics won't interfere with performance while building a very large factory with thousands of entities. If factory automation is something you find interesting, using conveyor belts and oil pipelines to automatically deliver ammunition to your turrets to fight invading aliens, then you should check this game out.

Pros:

- Works well on Mac OS X along with Windows.

- 100% Original content, with brand new ideas to the gaming industry.

- Performance is still very good even with a very large factory.

Cons:

- While the game supports multiplayer mode, I had trouble with constant map desync. This will probably be improved upon in the future.

<<< Highly recommended to try this game out. >>>
