Where to begin. I could start off by talking about the source material and my love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with it, or I could talk about my love/hate (mostly love) relationship with this game.

Sword Art Online the anime was mediocre at best and only got worse as time went on. It lured you in with the concept of "You die in the game you die in real life" which was really intriguing at first, as it fits with one of the shows core concepts, which is interactions in the online world are just as real as those that take place in the real one. That being said, Reki is a bad writer who doesn't know how to expand on these concepts, and after Yui was introduced, things started going really downhill. Kirito as an audience surrogate just didn't work with a harem around him, and he was just too bland to be a character of his own. That, and all the other stuff like the aforementioned harem, and by extension, fanservice, ruined something that had a chance to grow into something better.

That being said, this game is really good, despite my gripes with the source. The controls feel nice, the gameplay fluid, the story *not* as bad as I expected, and it actually makes me kinda like Kirito.

Fatal Bullet is the fourth game in the SAO Game Project, a series of games that take place in a kind of alternate timeline, that splits off during the fight with Heathcliff and the players remain trapped in the game. There a few differences in here compared to the anime, like Sinon meeting the crew in SA:Origin (essentially an SAO remake without the murder), or that a majority of the story takes place before Death Gun appears.

The story is pretty standard, where you are invited to play GGO by your childhood friend Kureha, and immediatly after joining she drags you into a tournemant to find some cool gear. By sheer luck, you find yourself becoming the master of an ArFA-sys Type X, an advanced AI who is meant to help new players. Kirito appears, some un-important plot happens, and you meet the rest of the cast of SAO (Who for some reason all hang out in Kirito's room). From there, you and your new friends decide to upgrade you ArFA-sys and get stronger so you can do the new end-game dungeon that's being added in a bit. At some point just before you enter the new content area, the Death Gun arc starts, and you know what happens (For the most part; some stuff happens to you while Kirito does his own thing).

In terms of gameplay I can summarize it in a single word: Superb. I love the way it feels when playing. You have access to 8 different weapon types, and an array of abilities and gadgets at your disposal, so you can always change things up to keep it fresh. Fights are almost always fast paced and challenging, and movement is almost constant, as if you sit still for too long outside of cover, you can find yourself going down pretty quickly. You also have access to an aim assist option, which will automatically target enemies infront of you in a certain area, at the cost of a bit of accuracy. This is a blessing on controller, where constantly moving around means constantly moving your reticle, and you know how much of a pain that is on controller. When you scope in, if your reticle is close enough to a target, it will lock on for a moment, which also makes sniping a lot easier.

Going back a bit to weapons and abilities, there are 8 different weapons and 6 different roles, which are affected by what abilities you have equiped. The 8 different weapons are Handgun, Assault Rife, SMG, Shotgun, Sniper, Explosive weapons (Rocket and Grenade launchers), Gatling guns, and Swords. Within these weapons types, there are also different damage types, being Physical, Energy, and Melee, as well as diffrent ammo types depending on what gun you're using (As an example, one sniper can take normal sniper rounds while another can take anti material rounds), and all of these can affect the gun's damage. Abilities are also important, and you can set up to 4 per weapon, allowing you to quickly swap up builds quickly when you change up your gear. These abilities include things like buffs, healing, status effects, mobility, damage, and so on. As you use these abilities, your profciency goes up with them, allowing you to pick up more powerful versions of them later down the line.

Multiplayer is also fun, where you can either fight a stronger version of a story boss, and another even stronger version after you beat the game. With the recent addition of co-op dungeons, multiplayer is a lot better than what it was before. The multiplayer dungeons seem to be limited to DLCs, where you go through a dungeon and fight an alternate version of the DLC's boss, except without any AI companions, making co-op with friends almost mandatory. There's also PvP, with modes such as free for all and deathmatch, where everyone fights to deal the most damage to a boss at the same time, while fighting the opposite team at the same time. I have not had experience with PvP, mostly because I'd rather co-op with my friends, and PvP seems to be dead anyways.

Oh yeah, Kirito is actually chill, and unlike his soggy cardboard personality in the anime, he's actually just a chill guy who likes games and helping people. They also poke fun at him in a side event, where Lisbeth says, and I quote, "It's like every five minutes he's picked up another hottie! Where does he keep finding them?!" Which I appreciate.

I do have a few minor problems with the game, but these are more personal gripes than actual flaws.
  • Pillow talk scenes are back, and while you can get them with the GGO specific cast as your character, you need to unlock Kirito Mode in order to have them with anybody from the original SAO cast
  • Rather than actually be set up in their own shops, most of the services are provided by Kirito's friends, which are all located in his room. It's convenient that they're all in one spot, but still, I'd expect player vendors to actually have a storefront.
  • Fascimiles can go to hell.

So yeah, I'd recommend this game. It's pretty good, and although the story could use some work, it's leagues better than SAO's script.

9/10

Don't bother. This game used to be good, I played it quite a bit before it was on steam. I stopped playing for a long time, and when I came back, the game I loved was gone. I am excited to see Ember, which is a spiritual successor to Firefall, and it's going to be how the game should have been. Make sure to support it at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ember-forums-website-art#/
