Editing review now that I've got more time into the game.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is very good. Like, I'd say it's my favourite game of all time (a title which was held by the previous game), with the a lot of improvements compared to the first, albeit a few parts where it stumbles which keep it from being a truly perfect experience.

I'll get right into the meat and talk about gameplay, specifically vocations first. It's a very decisive topic apparently, with a lot of people saying that vocations have been stripped back, when I find the opposite to be the case. They got rid of a lot of overlap between the vocations by making each one wield unique weapons, and gave each their own identity, all of which are fun to play.

At first glance it seems like the decrease from 6 skill slots in the original to just 4 in the sequel seems like a bit of a step backwards, some active skills (such as tusk toss, scarlet kisses, and most importantly anodyne) have been integrated into the base move set of the weapon, meaning that you have a little more freedom and diversity when it comes to skill selection.

I'd say my first gripe with the game comes with Warfarer, the 10th vocation. As a jack of all trades, it really is a master of none. You can swap weapons on the fly, which looks really cool, but you have to dedicate a skill slot to being able to do so. That wouldn't be so bad, if not for the fact that each weapon shares the skill pool you assign. If you equip all fighter skills and switch to a magic bow, you aren't doing much other than basic attacks.

Speaking of attacks, combat. It feels fantastic. The big fellas are always a pleasure to fight, especially some of the new additions to the roster (like the Minotaur and the silly goobers in the post game). Fights are always fast, with a few more ways to turn fights to your favour, such as the updates to the monster climbing. You can actually stand on a monster now without consuming stamina, which is very very welcome.

Graphics and the art direction are fantastic. The world is gorgeous, and minus the occasional dips in towns, I haven't had a problem running this on max settings. Tangent time. I was fighting a Gryphon after an ambush, and while I was on it's back it fled, with me still on it. Seeing the world fly by on the back of that overgrown bird was honestly just hit a chord with me. The whole of world is just breathtaking.

Now, the story. It's certainly a Dragon's Dogma story, alright. Not going to go super in depth to avoid spoilers, however I feel like it both does better and falls short compared to the first game, depending on the point you're at. Does that make sense?

For example, if I had to choose between the Wyrmhunt from the first game or the Vermund quests from the second, it'd be Vermund. If I had to choose between the Duke's Orders and dragon leadup from the first, or Batahl and it's respective dragon leadup, it'd be the Duke's Orders easy.

At the end of the day, I guess I was just hoping for a little more in the story department, at least more focus on Batahl.

I found post game to be both rad as hell and once again, a bit of a let down. I won't spoil what happens, but I was hoping that the latter half of the post game would be more akin to the first, where you challenge the Seneschal upon the throne of the world, rather than there not really being a latter half at all?

Ultimately I think the story falls short compared to the original. The 'cycle' that they had between arisen and dragon in the first game was honestly just better. The dragon doesn't have much emphasis on it, even during its own fight, and it doesn't really get weird or whack after defeating it.

It is worth noting that Denuvo DRM is part of the package, which is a bit of a turn off for some people which I totally get, and I think is a little dumb seeing as Steam already takes the role of a DRM, just not to the extent of Denuvo.

I'm not going to go into the microtransaction discourse since I think it's just a little dumb for only calling Capcom out for this practice after already doing it for about 9 or so years since the release of DMC4 Special Edition on Steam, and it's honestly just end up being a critique of the gaming industry as a whole nowadays. The only thing I will mention is that everything being offered are items that you can get in game relatively easily.

So yeah, pretty dec game, like 8/10 imo

Game good, although a little let down by the story.

I am a simple man. I see Etrian on PC, and I purchase.

Is it overpriced? Yeah.

Do I care? Not really.

Should you care? Probably. Try to snag it on sale.
