EDIT: Removed 30 fps as a con, the game was updated to add a 60 fps cap.

As you can probably tell by my profile picture, I'm a fan of this game (ignore the hours on my steam profile, as I played through the game about three times when visiting family on my brother's account), but I don't believe there's a single game out there that doesn't have its flaws and Hyper Light Drifter still follows that general rule.

PROS
+Fast paced combat
+Zelda esque exploration (from the first one to A Link to the Past)
+Great art style
+Great music
+Difficult but rewarding, akin to Dark Souls in that respect
+Ambiguous story telling
+No longer locked to 30 fps, can be locked to 60.

CONS
-Sometimes, you can drive yourself into a wall if you don't manage your resources, making the game feel unbalanced
-Can get a little too ambiguous

However, despite the cons, Hyper Light Drifter presents a very new and fresh design that could only really be created in today's indie game scene, standing right up there with some of the recent calssics of the genre. The inspiration from 80's anime is a particularly enjoyable nod, as it creates an atmosphere heavy game that feels nostalgic while being absolutely new at the same time. The focus on a central mechanic also helps it from devolving into a fluffed up experience, instead feeling like it's a well polished game. The progression system in the game isn't heavy with RPG like point allocation, but instead offers clear and substantial upgrades that not only make your character more formidable, but improves on the combat by adding more guns, moves, dashes, etc. If you love difficult games, games with a cohesive aesthetic and music, and have a certain fondness for the 80s, get this game. Even if none of the above is particularly appealing to you, the combat still might be, since it's so polished, so I'd urge you to check it out!

The game itself is a lot of mindless fun, in the vein of The Incredible Hulk (same developers and such). However, the PC version of the game is riddled with a lot of problems. For instance, just getting a controller to work in the game invovles hassling around in the device manager, something I haven't encountered in any other game so far (and I really recommend using a controller, the keyboard and mouse controls are absolutely horrible in this game). I was on the verge of not recommending the game, but since there probably isn't going to be any patches of this game ever, I figured that those who would buy the game would probably do so knowing these problems. Any problems you have with the port, you can likely find solutions for it on pcgamingwiki (which I recommend checking before buying any game) and get the game running in a few minutes.

This is a tough one. What I played, I really loved. However, that's at around 18-20 fps. I know it's not me, as I just got done playing Crysis 3 at a steady 60 fps with everything on 'high.' It may be because I have an AMD Radeon card. I'm not going to fault the game for this as it is Early Access and it just came out. I'm also getting a bug where the options menu hangs everytime I apply the option. I can keep selecting ''apply,' but it won't go away, forcing me to manually close the game.

The game plays fantastic. Currently only one map, but the game feels fantastic. I'll give it a cautious recommendation and hope that it gets updated very soon.

EDIT: The game seems to be locked at 17 fps for me. This is...odd. I get 30fps at the splash screens. Then, in the menu AND gameplay, it just stays at 17. Neither up or down. Huh.

So, what the developer essentially did was take Megaman, Duck Tales (NES), Super Mario Bros 3, and Zelda II and threw them into a couldron. Then, they proceeded to add their own ingredients until this game surpassed (dare I say it?!?!) most of the games I mentioned.

While this game may be a love letter to the old days of a dpad and two buttons, it is very much its own game and has successfully carved itself a place amongst classics for me. The platforming is very tight, the level design is wonderful and different, there's a lot of humor in the game, and some touching moments too. This is just a VERY good game. I...I can't think of anything that's wrong with it. It was very clear in what it set out to do and it did it. In that regards, the game is of extremely high quality. It didn't falter in any way or in any of its mechanics.

10/10. Now, let me explain. This isn't the same experience you're going to get with, say, a game from Valve or Blizzard or another big company name. This game deserves a perfect score because it accomplished what it set out to do. It delivered on all fronts and gave us great platforming with a retro style. There is not one category that I can say it fell short in. There is simply nothing wrong with this game.

If you like platformers, sidescrollers, metroidvanias, or the NES, I'm incredibly surprised you haven't picked it up yet. Go buy it, you dolt.
