10th Anniversary Update Edit: Wow... I'm... flabbergasted. This is the 10th anniversary of this game, and the event is just... a commemoration of how aggressively monetized this game is. Basically you need to grind every day for points to get the free ship. The thing is, it's TWENTY points. Missed some days because you have a real life? TOO BAD, YOU GOTTA PAY IN ZEN COINS! PAY ME! "Oh and we have this pack with all the basic ships THAT COSTS FORTY FIVE GRAND ZEN COINS, PAY ME! Oh hey, but you are our fans! We need to give you a freebie, right? Here, something to show you that we love your walle- I mean we love you!

... Have a free Abraham Lincolm suit!"

It's the tenth anniversary of this game, it should have done something big and rewarded those who are with them, and yet it's just another special mission with the newest iterations of the series where you just basically go on shooting stuff and then have to grind in the same Q particle events, so just like any other event with any other new thing about the scenario. Edit Over.

This game is the equivalent of a meth user trying to desperately sell you cocaine in order to keep his addiction. Why doesn't he snorts the cocaine himself? Because by now, it does nothing. Only those delicious meth rocks will give it bliss.

And to get bliss, you must pay. You. Will. Pay.

I've played F2P 'freemium' games before, but it's rare to see such an aggressive stance. This game sports at least FIVE different currencies (Zen coins, Energy Credits, Dilithium, Fleet Marks, Gold Bars and three other minor currencies like jewels), every one of them having to be separatedly grinded for specific purposes, and every single specific purpose being linked to the Zen Coins, the main honcho, the big boss. Want a good ship? Get at least 70k REFINED dilithium (and you can only refine 8k dilithium per day) and you can buy the low-tier scrappy range stuff. Anything above it will be Zen coins. Oh, you got into a Fleet (this game's guild) and it offers you some nice ships too? get ready to grind and grind and grind for fleet credits, only to discover that the amount you grinded is useless because you also need a "Fleet ship Module", and the only way to get said module is, yes, you guessed it, Zen Coins. Wanna change your character's name? Zen Coins. Wanna mine dilithium? You need a special permission, that is locked behind a box, that need a key, that costs Zen Coins.

"But Skullwriter! It's faaiiirrrrr, you just have to mine and do missions and get lucky enough to score 8k and exchange it for Zen Coooinnssss"

First, child, get away from my keyboard, second, while you are right that you can exchange refined dilithium for Zen Coins, you are at the mercy of their 'market' with superinflated prices. Every zen coin costs you from 280 to 300 dilithium. Meaning, from 8k, you get aproximatedly 28, 29 Zen coins per day.

A mid-tier ship is 2,500. And may V'ger have mercy on your soul if you try to go up against people who pay real money for coins.

And if these wicked economics weren't enough, shoddy graphics, buggy interface and game and the DESPERATE NEED to make you spend Zen Coins no matter what (from interior decoration of your ship to a simple paint job that costs you, I'm not kidding, 500, for a paint job), it was my love for Star Trek that brought me these many hours. Ironic that a series about a future without money would end up so capitalist-driven.

I honestly have a lot of issues with the way this game has been handled, but to suggest that it's WORSE than EVE is just ridiculous. It's not even half as bad as SWTOR's micro transaction model. Yes, there is a P2W wall at end game, where people that are willing to drop some cash can pick up a solid ship. Is having a badass T6 ship necessary to experience the VAST majority of the content in this game? Absolutely not.

If your goal is to play a game for free, race to end game and be successful, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Most anything that you need (including ships) can be purchased for EC's on the market board.

P2W is BS and we all know it. But the fact remains that you can still sink hundreds of hours into 95% of this game and never have to spend a dime of real money to have fun.

@jtscottsas what a load of crap you have written. for me to buy a GOOD ship whether fleet or not, doing everything you said at 10+hours a day would still take FOREVER to do. this is the point there are games like path of exiles that thrive on COSMETIC microtransactions. the way these guys are doing it is straight up BS and even EVE isnt this bad, and thats saying a lot

Actually, you do not NEED to buy the hull type, you can select any of the others. You earn Dilitium from missions, and whilst you might not get a lot, you will earn a lot, which you can turn into fleet credits. EC can be gained by selling all your loot drops on the exchange, the stuff that sells quickly is generally not the best. Latinum is just rather pointless right now, You can also, if you get a high enough level do Admiralty missions, which give you a few large amounts of EC, sometimes. Fleets are generally VERY helpful, I know mine is, in terms of getting a new ship, you can earn ships, sometimes, or you can buy them through the exchange.
