Short, simple and a dumb fun spinoff to the original game.
If you wanted the horror aspects of Alan Wake to be expanded then you should go play Alan Wake 2.
American Nightmare is not about that, it's just about making a fun gameplay out of the systems that already have been build for the Alan Wake 1. Making it more of the Arcade-like Third Person Shooter than a Action-Horror that the original game was.
It's not bad at all, it's fun to play, the story is very basic, the gameplay can get repetative but it works. As a simple spin-off it's a very fun experience.
But I am gonna say this - Thank god that this game was not made as Alan Wake 2 as originally planned. Because as Alan Wake sequel it fails, it isn't a sequel. The Alan Wake 2, that we have today, IS.

This game is a big reason why Retro-shooters are as popular as they are now. But playing it right now is painful.
The game is broken on almost every level, I never had so many softlocks in any other games and the balance is horrible.
As a Remake it's alright I guess, I still personally prefer the original ROTT, but eh, it's not bad as a remake. (not in the gameplay tho, mostly in style)
The voice acting and the new humor awful, I hate it.
Most of the people behind this game later made it into New Blood... and the rest gave us Phantom Fury.
Don't buy this game, buy Dark War Remaster by Nightdive instead.

Dumb fun

This is one of the most unusual and creative games I've played in my recent time.
Breathtaking atmosphere, fantastic music, interesting story and unusual puzzles.
Seeing how "We Create Stuff" have grown from modifications on Half-Life 2 to such an amazing game is nothing but inspiring.
This game is proving that video games are first and foremost an art form!

Remove "shock" elements and the game has nothing to show. It has neat AI but people remember the game not because of it, but because of poop jokes and "shock" material.
It is the most mediocre game I've ever played.

Short, nice and simple, as all expansion packs should be.
