Fun with a few gameplay issues. It's basically Quake Live with an artpass at this point. May be good to wait for the second map in February if you want more variety, but the current map is very good.

I did notice that the game feels sort of laggy. The lowest ping server I can find is 50ms, and even on this server some players teleport when they double-jump. This may be a server-side issue, as I was using fairly low graphics settings, but I don't really know.

Some gameplay feedback:
-The Cerberus is very powerful in DM, in TDM it seems to be less of a problem
-I question the damage dropoff model on the Bullcrap shotgun
-I do not like the weapon autoswap mechanic. I'd at least like to set my own weapon priorities so that I don't switch from the shotgun to the sniper I accidently picked up while fighting in close range
-There seems to be no way of knowing which weapon I will scroll to next
-I feel like the primary fire on the flamethrower is really weak, and secondary uses too much ammo
-Visual effects for the flamethrower block too much of the screen
-The starting pistol is next to useless. I'd like to see an interesting buff to it, like giving you faster cloak regen while you have it out rather than something boring like a fire rate increase
-I like the concept of the violator but primary fire seems weak and secondary fire is very hard to hit anything with. Maybe let the grenades roll a bit?

I can't help but compare this game to Bastion, which is one of my favorite games in my library. This does not dissapoint in the slightest. Combat was very different and unexpected, but also very fun and interesting once you get used to the fundamentals. The art was beautiful, and the soundtrack was even better than Bastion's, if that's even possible! The story is convoluted and I found it confusing until the end, when everything fell into place at once. The game is somewhat shorter than Bastion (I beat it in 5 hours), but it is just as replayable, and I certainly will play again to unlock all of the function files. Great game overall!

There is SO MUCH CONTENT. There's cosmetic stuff, guns, mobs... There are at least 8 types of beds. You can sleep in a doghouse. There are dungeons full of poop monsters, dinosaur hats, turtleshell backpacks, castles guarded by robots, a giant dragon, huge flying pirate ships, roombas (in the human dungeons), roaming pants merchants with wheelbarrows (you can also sleep in wheelbarrows), brain trees, playable instruments to annoy your friends with, birds that vomit blood on you, I could go on all day.

The combat is also great. You can use your special ability techs to attack or evade enemies. You can hide behind your riot shield and spray bullets, transform into a mech robot, charge in with a shotgun, or (my favorite) use a boost tech to launch yourself at enemies with a giant hammer.

All this with almost no game breaking bugs.

So I really liked this game when it first came out. One of my friends got a 4-pack during the free weekend and we all played a few hours. 3 days later the community was dead and there was nobody on any of the servers. I've been thinking about why this happened.

First of all, the player has only 3 weapons- the projectile weapon (rocket launcher), the railgun (sniper weapon), and melee. Out of the 6 plants that players can plant on captured platforms, only the turret and the ramp are useful in most situations. This severely limits the player's playstyle and makes the overall game less interesting.

Secondly, because the three combat options are hitting a fast moving enemy with your fist while moving very fast, shooting a fast moving enemy with a projectile weapon with a tiny area of effect, or sniping a fast moving enemy without any sort of scope there will be a huge skill gap. New players will have a very hard time actually doing anything, so they won't want to stick around. The only way to get better is to practice.

This brings me to my third point; you can't practice because there is nobody to practice against. Most of the time, there are zero players on. The only time anyone is on is for the weekly dev game and the occasional password-protected tournament match.

Also, a lot of the maps aren't much fun to play. The only good maps are the ones with ball spawn areas that are much lower than the goals. Putting the ball spawn lower down makes it easily accessible from multiple routes, making it harder to camp the ball. It also makes it easier to defend because the ball carrier has to climb all the way up to the goal. On a flat map, one team gets to the ball first, camps there, and can easily hold off the other team while they send one player to zip across the map with a powerup and score instantly over and over again.

To the devs- I still think this game is very promising. If you can update it to make it more diverse and suitable for multiple playstyles and narrow the skill gap, then get it featured on the store frontpage with a sale you might be able to build a lasting player base.

Yes, the art is great, the soundtrack is great, the story is great, but the actual gameplay itself wasn't very fun at all. This feels like it should have been a movie and not a videogame. You are almost always locked into one path. It didn't feel like an adventure at all- there's no real danger. Also it's very short. I definitely can't reccommend it until Act 2 comes out.

1) The game doesn't explain itself. Especially in the Vella story, I got through all the puzzles by clicking on things in my inventory randomly. Also, at one point in the Vella story you come to a puzzle that can only be solved by an object from much earlier in the game that, at the time, you didn't actually need to have. I ended up having to go all the way back for it. Then there's also the part with the snake that blocks the path. There's no way to get past the snake. It's basically an invisible wall. But I didn't realize this, so I spent a good amount of time trying to get past the snake because I thought that that was how I was meant to progress.

2) Yes, I get that there will be a second part, but even with all the wandering pointlessly and clicking randomly that I did, I still beat the game (both storylines) in 5 hours. Again, half of that time was spent wandering around between the beach and the woods. I beat the game the same day that I bought it.

3) Maybe this game isn't supposed to work this way, but there's no way to lose the game. When you finally confront Mog Chothra at the end of Vella's story, you can stand on the beach as long as you want, and even when Mog Chothra finally grabs you, you just dangle in front of its closed mouth for a minute until Vella frees herself automatically or you do something. There is absolutely no pressure on you to do anything. Take your time.
