I don't even know what direction the developers are taking their game, or if they themselves even know. The game is OKAY if you're looking for a simple zombie survival game. It's horrible if you're looking for a zombie survival game with in-depth mechanics. If you're looking for the latter, consider heavily modding the game. The vanilla game as a whole, is just a mish-mash of somewhat in-depth mechanics, a tedious skill system, mediocre combat, and simplified mechanics that would be better if they were fleshed out even further.

To me, it looks like they jumped into version 1.0 for a little cash injection for their spin-off early access game, 7 Days Blood Moons. It seems strange to me that they would begin work on some spin-off that I'm not sure anybody who's a fan of this game even asked for, and to even consider making another game when this one doesn't even seem finished yet? Why???

Hello Games committed to their vision and managed to make No Man's Sky into a fantastic game, and I thought The Fun Pimps were capable of doing the same here. Sad to say, it seems like due to lack of vision for this game they kinda just gave up.

So, no, I would not recommend getting this game at full price, despite the "1.0 update" and the exit from a 10 year long early access, it doesn't feel like a finished $45 title.

about as refreshing as a glass of cold water at 3am. so damn good, well worth the 4 year wait for a polished PC port.

Honestly? This is a better game than Daemon X Machina. There’s a lot I could say, many praises and criticisms, but in the end this is a passion project made by one person who wanted to make a mecha game of their own, and I accept this game as it is despite all of the gripes I have about it.

Great game, good enough narrative, decent controls, cool mechs and weapons. I’d love to see Gearbits go further as a series, whether it be through DLC or a sequel.

I find it odd that the game doesn't support ALL 21:9 resolutions. 3440x1440 is not supported natively for some odd reason, I had to use Universal Unreal Unlocker and the game runs perfectly with it. Other than that, it's a solid game.

TL;DR: Get it on sale, don't expect a good story, it's got decent hack n' slash/shooter combat but mech customization doesn't really make a huge impact.

The story is... well, it's there. It's your typical, predictable, Saturday morning cartoon good vs. evil plot. I didn't really care much for it, but there is an obscene amount of forced dialogue portions that really take you out of the game. Dialogue that you have to "press A to continue" mid-battle, and that's just annoying to have to go through. In Armored Core, the characters just talk while you're fighting. In DXM, there's a whole screen dedicated to it, taking you out of the gameplay and shoving the plot/filler dialogue in your face, as if the game designers want to make sure you're following along with the story.

Gameplay is fine, it's tight and controlling your mech is very responsive. The customization is OKAY; nothing on the level of Armored Core as some might say, I was able to go through the whole campaign and side missions with just one build, so that should basically sum up the impact that customizing your mech has on the gameplay. The fighting is okay, but don't expect it to be an Armored Core-like. It's pretty much your average "shoot it until it has no HP, and shoot the glowy weak spots to get it to no HP faster" type of gameplay loop. The map designs are okay, I like (most of) the urban environments because it isn't spattered with horrible saturated colors everywhere like some of the desert maps are. DLC add-ons weren't appealing to me, as the default mech styles were cooler than the paid stuff IMO.

There is no native ultrawide support, and no FOV slider, so I did have to mod the game to make it a bit more bearable for me, since in the vanilla game your Arsenal takes up about 45% of screenspace if you were playing in 16:9 aspect ratio. Playing this game on controller is very nice, but there are no DualShock controller prompts so you'll either need to mod those in, or play on your PS controller regardless, or have an Xbox controller on hand like I do. What really was a make-or-break element of this game for me was the customizable HUD. THANK GOODNESS they have that, because the default HUD is HORRIBLE and cluttered beyond belief, more games should have a custom HUD menu.

For those expecting a super fun, hack n' slash soulslike co-op RPG, Outward is NOT it. If that's what you were expecting, you can download mods to make it that way, otherwise the vanilla experience is probably not what most casual players are looking for. Most might argue it's a bad game if you have to mod it for it to be fun, but the vanilla game is in no way bad, it's just very different from what most people will expect.

Outward is designed to be played SLOW. And I mean everything is slow, even the combat. Most of the time the fighting can be reduced to hitting an enemy once, then dodging or blocking for a good 30 seconds before landing another hit on repeat. There are no fast travel or mounts, so you will be walking pretty much everywhere you go. This is not your usual action RPG, and do not approach it as such. Sleeping is a mechanic that is necessary so that your character doesn't get tired and lose health and stamina.

In terms of quests and choices, it's pretty good and it does not hold your hand at all. Every action you make matters, however it seems like dialogue choices don't really make too much of a difference except for a handful of quests. It's more based on the decisions you make on killing somebody or outright just abandoning the quest, as every quest has a time-limit to encourage agency. Some quests can end up changing the world entirely, with some having actual proper consequences from not acting on them, so it's a pretty solid quest system.

Replayability is pretty good, the game has some mechanics that encourage you to start New Game Plus like legacy gear that can turn certain sets of gear into an upgraded version of it for your new character. Although, I'd say the Three Brothers DLC should only be played once, I personally don't think it's very good as the Soroboreans.

I'd say give the game a shot, pick it up during a sale and if you don't like the vanilla game, you can mod it to the level of a Soulslike in terms of combat responsiveness with the Combat Tweaks Mod. The Raid Mode Mod is a must if you want to play with more than 2 people.

Great story, great lore, combat leaves much to be desired but it's a product of its time so I can't really fault it for that.
