Absolutely terrible. Another classic fumble by BHVR, most incompetent, useless devs I've ever seen. I wish I wasn't so attached to this game cause it's genuinely such a waste of time.
Useless killer, useless new killer perks, impossibly big new map, survivor perks are completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken (WHO thought 3% perma haste is balanced? Genuinely not a SINGLE braincell at BHVR).

Somehow this is one of my favourite indie games out there, and at the same time I just can't recommend it to other people simply because of the amount of wasted potential this game has.

The idea, mechanics, art, MUSIC, and general direction of the game is fantastic. There's very few games like Flinthook out there and it can be insanely fun to traverse the hundreds of different rooms and spaceships in the game.
However, this all goes to waste because of a few quite simple balance issues. While games like this one should feel like every time you try again is a new exciting adventure in which you will learn more about the layout of the map/enemies/powerups/etc. it ends up being an incredibly frustrating experience which is not rewarding enough to justify the challenge. Looking at games like The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Hades (...) it always seems like every new run you learn more and more about the game and how to tackle difficult opponents or situations, while on Flinthook it constantly feels like you're given ONE right way to win, and if you fail by one fraction of a second, you'll get heavily punished.

Healing items are basically worthless or insanely rare/expensive; challenging rooms hardly give enough of a reward to justify the effort and enemies just have a much easier time hitting you than the other way around. The fact you have no effective way of dodging only makes it much worse. On top of this, there's a number of threats which blend so well with the environment, you won't realise they're there until you've already taken damage.

In short, the game is INSANELY unforgiving, even more considering how much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it constantly likes to pull on the player.

If I could go back 8 years and force myself to never touch this game my life would be much better. ♥♥♥♥ BHVR.

This game is very frustrating for all the wrong reasons. The devs have a very abstract idea of what "hitbox" means, and you'll find yourself dying over and over agaIn from wonky visuals, controls and physics.
This would be a positive review if the game was free, but honestly you're better off spending the money (as cheap as it is) in Steam Cards.

Short but awesome to play with friends. Cannot wait to play the second installment; music, gameplay and visuals are all great and really help the game feel more immersive. AND IT'S FREE.

I wish there was a "neutral" thumb because this game COULD be good if they got rid of every cheap mechanic and polished controls a little bit. Every time you die it feels as if the game is purposely screwing with you. Some would say it just requires "skill," but the controls are sometimes just intolerable.
Definitely one of the most frustrating games I have ever played, not asking for a refund just because it was one dollar.

Overall, the game is not terrible. It has some interesting mechanics and even though it's not very scary the story is somewhat interesting most of the time. My problem with it is that everywhere you look the game just screams unpolished; specifically, my biggest problem with DreadOut is the huge amount of bugs especially those related to achievements. Some of them were so buggy I had to try 3 or 4 different approaches to unlocking them, and others were unlocked without apparent reason (I got Olympic Medalist when playing Act 0 ?).

Because of all of this, I would recommend buying the game if it was as cheap as I got it (which was for about a dollar), but if you're a completionist or expecting to get a memorable horror game out of this, I would say stay away from DreadOut.
