there's an active american server on here called smokingun's hideout. it's a 'christian server' but it has a wide variety of maps and a pretty consistent playerbase, especially on the weekends. I actually prefer this version over 1.6

It's free software that lets you stream/watch movies in VR, and as long as you stick to private sessions by yourself or with friends, it's decent.

The community, however, is the Facebook of VR games. Literally 1/3 to 1/2 of all public lobbies are full of Christians and Muslims arguing and trying to convert people 24 hours a day. The avatars look absolutely atrocious and make VRchat's plethora of horny anime girls seem palatable in comparison. The few lobbies that are actually streaming content are usually showing WWE, Marvel films, or FOX News. Worst of all, most of the community watches Big Mouth and considers it to be one of the greatest shows of all time.

This is the game to install for your boomer dad when he gets a Quest for his birthday, but if you're under the age of 50 and aren't a complete imbecile, you're probably better off with Virtual Home Theater or Popcorn Palace in VRChat.

Just like Counter-Strike Source, all of the moderators of the 5 remaining servers are ran by boomers who enforce some really bizarre rules and think anyone remotely decent is hacking. 6th Ranger Battalion is honestly in the running for the most asinine moderation I've ever seen in a Source game. I'm generally an agreeable person but I'm not going to bend over backwards for some geriatic mod who thinks my fake email username is 'advertising a website'. You are old, you should know what aol is.

Community in general is also just generally annoying and takes the game too seriously. DoD hasn't been relevant in 20 years, but you will be openly insulted by other players for being new and trying to figure out the game. I encourage anyone who has rose-tinted glasses for the 'pre-matchmaking' days to try this game out and remember how awful community servers can be.

This is very close to being a great game, but Valve seems to have forgotten to add in an assault rifle class, which ends up making this game feel very awkward and unbalanced. Also only one class has grenades, and all of his guns revolve around shooting them for some reason. Valve seems to realize that Demoman is a bad class, so they compensated by giving him swords to use instead which just makes no sense.

I highly recommend playing Counter-Strike instead, which has a far larger player count as it is clearly the superior game.

You spend hours solving complex math equations while a bunch of ugly aliens repeat the same "encouraging" voice lines over and over. The guns are a complete farce and are only used to shoot the numbers needed to solve the math problems.

Only people who like this game are boomers who would be entertained by anything.

A great place to meet single men in their 40s.

The only active server for this game revolves around killing a bot that looks like Elon Musk.

10/10, Valve's magnum opus.

Joined a Russian server that forcibly changed my config file and now when my computer starts I see a mysterious command prompt appear for half a second.

I'm sure it's fine though. Great game.
