Easily the best HoloLive fan game made so far. It's basically Vampire Survivors that offers a ton of unique features that pay tribute to events and other smaller happenings in the community ("Collab" weapons, enemies being the "sonas" of each VTuber's fans, etc.).

For a free game, it's extremely high-quality. The fans who made it truly love the IP they've adapted.

Played the hell out of this on PS3 back in 2011 then for Sonic's 25th in 2016. Such a great game. Not perfect, but great!

Too bad they had to go and make a censored version that's not locked behind Denuvo while using glorified DLC starring Shadow to cover up their crime for delisting the original and forcing new players to experience Ian Flynn's fanfiction.

Whatever you do, do whatever it takes to get THIS VERSION of the game and not the censored "remaster".

This is by far the BEST Monster Jam game in a long time! Physics are consistent, the core gameplay is enjoyable, and the truck roster is fantastic (and the BIGGEST lineup for any single Monster Jam game to ever have at Launch)! Love the UI design too, as it's very "punkish" and reminds me of a high-schooler's notebook doodles (but in color). The game has a THPS-like Combo system that makes chaining stunts in Freestyle very addicting, but wish it recognized them more easily instead of being overly rigid.

My biggest critiques are collision detection (especially with crush cars and smaller environmental geometry in the outdoor races) and the repetitive/redundant nature of the game's single player Showdown Tour (Online Multiplayer has a couple extra modes that are more fun, but can only be accessed online only). If they can just fix the the collision detection to be more "organic", then that's a major criticism addressed. Sadly, the campaign and modes are set, so that's gonna need a sequel to properly address. This will definitely be where the game makes or breaks for people. Also, no Free Play sadly, so you'll have to replay Showdown Tour events if you're a solo gamer.

As it stands, Monster Jam Showdown is a good game and fun to play through. It's not exactly far from perfect, but it does come up short like a photo finish at the World Finals (the Racing portion that is). With some vital collision tweaks, a more fleshed out selection of gameplay modes, and maybe some extra retired or independent trucks, a follow up could easily be the greatest Monster Jam game ever made! Just needs more TLC.

Final Verdict:
7.4/10

BUYER BEWARE!
GAME IS ONLINE-ONLY!

This was not disclosed prior to launch and because it relies on servers to even play the game, there's lots of performance hiccups. It should go without saying, but this needs to be said...

STOP KILLING GAMES by making them pointlessly online-only!

This game is able to be played solo and should NOT be restricted to servers that are prone to downtime and eventual shutdown!

At the time of this review, I'm not even halfway through the game's main campaign yet and I'm already in LOVE with this game! The amount of content on offer is ABUNDANT for a modern indie game going for $20. Hell, it even surpasses a lot of games that go for the a full $60/$70!

The car roster is full of fun rides that need to be lovingly rebuilt from the junkyard before you can use them, there's a lot of fun side modes you can get lost doing (including a whole Left 4 Dead styled zombie shooter mode with it's own separate story to boot), the gameplay itself is both fun and challenging unlike most racing games nowadays (can't just run away from the AI here). and to top it all off... I LOVE that I can use my own MP3 music library natively in the game during events (not to say the included soundtrack is bad, it's quite good and full of great rock tracks)!

Even if you get the edition with all the DLC for $30, this game still packs a great value for your money. If you love arcade racers, give this game a fair shake! There's a demo available and is what sold me on the game. This game ROCKS, and I hope others find it too!

This has been the best $5 I've spent on a humble indie game... and I'm now $200 in debt due to buying music for it...

OK not really, I've long had a history with collecting MP3s. This game finally gives me yet another avenue to enjoy all my music other than just listening to it. Gameplay is very arcadey (very close to classics like Centipede and Space Invaders), and I enjoy the fact you can play just about anything when it comes to audio files. (unless it's shorter than 90 seconds in length, had to extend one song in my collection to get it to work).

I wish this game had a sequel with even more things to do, but this is a great bargain for $5 if you have a massive music collection like I do. If not, the game gives you over 20 original songs to play through. Not a bad deal if you're an music junkie.

Thank you for releasing this, because this is SO MUCH BETTER than the original game's soundtrack! Big plus for it being FREE!

While this game is a step up from 2011's Dreamworks Superstar Kartz... that is not saying much.

This game has some of the WORST AI I've ever encountered in a racing game. Even on the hardest difficulty and the fastest speed, they still lag behind you quite a ways if you're an experienced arcade racing gamer. No challenge whatsoever, fwlt pointless to go beyond the first cup after seeing how poorly they kept up with you.

Not only that, but the roster and kart selection is way more limited than Bamtang's last kart racer, Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway. Dreamworks has a pretty wide selection of movies that could've been represented, but all you get here is the obligatory super-classics (i.e. Shrek and Madagascar) and more recent productions (The Boss Baby and The Bad Guys) with very little in the way of deep cuts or even fanservice picks (seriously, where's characters like the Guardians, Tulio & Miguel, Chel, Moses, and Captain Underpants?). I know some of the ones I listed would never happen (mainly Chel and Moses for different reasons), but when over a quarter of the roster is Shrek-universe characters and Megamind didn't bring Minion or even Titan along... it's a bit jarring.

The Trolls... oh my word, the Trolls.
This kinda ties back into my previous point, but the main characters of that movie are delegated to "pit crew" status while the more disgusting side characters take up roster slots. Not only that, but the whole "Troll Surprise" mechanic is basically a worse and simplified version of the Pit Crew in the Nickelodeon Kart Racers series. Not only that, but different trolls do not give you any thing meaningful in the way of different abilities or bonuses and only serve as decoration most of the time. It also makes all the racers' karts have these tacky-looking handle bars mounted to the back of their karts... which just look awful from a vehicle design perspective.

As for the gameplay itself, the tracks are very wide with little to no challenge. It just feels empty most races, especially when coupled with the AI lagging behind you most of the time. Unless you've watched all the movies featured in this game, there's nothing indicating what tracks are from what properties. For example, "Greater Los Angelos" didn't click with me being from The Bad Guys... because the movie NEVER once said where it takes place (sure, there was some indication, but it was never outright said). And the game's Rainbow Road equivalent, "Galactic Sky", is a half-baked tribute to the iconic Dreamworks "moon child" logo... it doesn't even try to replicate the studio's newer intro. Drifting is just the same as it was in NKR3, but the wide track design makes it all but too easy to get Level 3 drift boosts on every turn.

In conclusion...
DON'T BUY THIS GAME!

This is by far one of the BEST non-Smash mascot platform fighters I've played in a long time. The Slime mechanic gives me PlayStation All-Stars vibes, but without it being required to KO an opponent... so good job devs! I like that the Jukebox feature returned, because this game's soundtrack is also leagues above the original's (you cannot tell me the main theme isn't inspired by that one Dragon Bal Super song, it just sounds like it so much). And the campaign... my goodness, the campaign... that has scratched my Subspace Emissary itch that I've had for so long now (and dare I say, it's BETTER than SSBU's "World of Light" campaign). The voice acting makes the characters feel like they occupy the same space, especially in the campaign, which is another thing Smash really doesn't do all that well... again, good job devs.

Now, there are SOME things I did NOT like this game doing. For starters, the roster: Yes, you have a solid selection here, but some of the cuts from Game 1 are incredibly baffling (Lucy but no Lincoln? Where's the other two Turtles? Why are Powdered Toastman and Hugh Heutron dangled in front of me as NPCs when they were playable previously? And why pray tell is Grandma Gertie here but not Helga?). I love the newcomers and even how the veterans got reworked, but those omissions still sting even though I know game development is not simply "copy-and-paste" when making a sequel.

Secondly, there's one major flaw in the gameplay I noticed during my time with it:
Momentum does NOT carry after jumping from platform to platform!

I'm hoping this is something that can be fixed in a patch, but it sucks having my sprint motion not carry over after landing from a jump. It has stumped me more times than I care to admit.

Aside from minor audio bugs, the game is FAR from a mixed bag. To say it's middling would be a lie. It is such a robust improvement over the original that it's apparent far more resources were pumped into it. I do enjoy the way the Campaign is structured, and really hope more platform fighters improve upon this concept... especially with character interactions (I'm sorry Smash players, but it's important for ANY CROSSOVER to make it feel like characters occupy the same space and aren't just simply standing next to each other with no awareness).

I'd give this game a 7 out of 10 at the moment. With the momentum issue and audio bugs ironed out, I'd boost this to an 8. Here's hoping the devs come through on these two bits, because this game IS GREAT so far. Please keep doing whatever it was you were doing during development post-launch. Please.

OK, so full disclosure... I had NO IDEA this game had even been ANNOUNCED, let alone released a couple days ago at the time of this review. I had played Runner3 on Nintendo Switch back when it launched in 2018, and I remember enjoying that game a lot despite how hard it got near the end. For the last five years, I've grown a bit of a fandom for CommanderVideo as a character and can't help but occasionally hum the BIT.TRIP theme (it really is that good of a song).

So here we are with a remake of the original BIT.TRIP RUNNER game that I played just a couple of years ago (again, on Nintendo Switch). So how does it compare?

Well, I DO appreciate the extra moves added to the commander's kit. I like how the team managed to add in some nods to the series' non-Runner titles and it further elevate the game beyond just a visual overhaul (the worms in Impetus scared me real bad the first time I saw it here, lol). As I was completing levels, I noticed I was earning Boom Boxes and Keys. Curious, I poked around in the main menu and found that not only could you unlock the original levels from BIT.TRIP RUNNER's original release, but the team at Choice Provisions went in and made "EP" level packs based on the remaining BIT.TRIP titles including Runner2 and Runner3 (complete with those games' original soundtracks). The Keys were used to unlock some really neat Behind-The-Scenes stuff and even fan art from other BIT.TRIP fans.

If that wasn't enough, the game includes an all-new level editor that allows people to make their own Runner levels. And in true post-Mario Maker era fashion, some of these community creations are EVEN HARDER than the main game (which I played on Medium, please don't judge me). While I haven't opened the editor myself at the time of writing, the little I've seen so far from the community makes my inner LittleBigPlanet fan scream in delight!

I think the only negatives I can give this game is that there's a lack of costumes (however, CommanderVideo DOES don his wristbands and sneakers in at least the Runner3 EP levels... though I don't know yet if they stay on during the Runner2 EP where those kicks originated). I can't really say the lack of extra playable characters is a bad thing, but I would've at least expected CommandgirlVideo to be an option considering she shares CommanderVideo's base.

Overall, this isn't a soulless remake compared to something like PAC-MAN World RePac or even Katamari Damacy REROLL (We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie is thankfully exempt from this in my opinion). There's a lot of heart put into this remake of the original BIT.TRIP RUNNER, and one that also pays respect to the later games that came after it and even the handful that came before it.

If you like Rhythm-based games or Auto-Runners that are actually challenging, BUY this game as soon as you humanly can!

BIT.TRIP RERUNNER is worth your time!
