It's the pokemon game that the original 10 year olds have been waiting for for ages.

TL;DR With a VR headset and HOTAS, "immersion" doesn't do the game justice. I can look over my shoulder tracking those scummy X-wings while my ship strains to keep up. If you felt like a pilot in the 90s games, you'll feel like a Top Ace now.

I used to play the crap out of TIE Fighter back in the mid nineties when I was a kid, and this is basically that
game's flight system for the modern era. 6 dof, managing engine/laser/shield systems, targeting subsystems, the works. They've even managed to add more depth in the form of ship modules that you can swap out that affect your ship's stats, rather than just choosing what missile to bring.

This is not a single player game, don't be fooled. The tutorial is mislabeled "Campaign", so don't expect any epic arcs and chained missions like in the old-school titles. In particular I found the dialog with your wingmates rather odd, almost like there was an invisible dialog screen like in Mass Effect or Skyrim and it was just automatically picking each of the four options for you.

But I'm not here to talk with randos, I'm here to shoot down rebel terrorists and look good doing it, and this game has that in spades.

I've got an Oculus Quest hooked up via Link and it works flawlessly. I also have the Thrustmaster T.16000M HOTAS and the game detected it just fine; I've had no problems with keybindings or dead zone issues but some other people apparently have, so YMMV.

I've had a blast in multiplayer so far, although there is a learning curve. Pro tip: if you're complaining about shields, you don't have enough ion cannons on your team.
