I am not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ normal about this game.

Extremely interesting setting, emergent gameplay that ranges from genuinely worthy of self-congratulation (stacking enough stuff onto a superheavy to kill it in one turn or coming FROM DOWNTOWN with Dall definitely qualifies) to plain hilarious. The dialogue is good, the characters are funny when it suits them and serious when it matters. The plot isn't anything groundbreaking, but the banter is the right amount of professional while still being snappy. Even the artstyle is really good when it has a chance to shine.

Early Access Review
you need a roof to use a workbench
you also need a roof to place a bed
it has to SPECIFICALLY be roof tiles
so I'm working on my house, I make a flat roof out of floor tiles
it's the middle of the night
I deconstructed my bed because it was open to the air
so I'm putting roof tiles on
and I remember that I also can't sleep unless my bed is close to a fire
and you can't place a fire on wooden floor
so I go outside to slap down a campfire so I can sleep
and there's a strong-ass enemy outside
and it kills me
and because my BED IS GONE
I DON'T SPAWN AT MY HOUSE

I cannot overstate how good this game feels to play. Rare are the moments where an attack hits you that you didn't allow through either distraction or misinput, the soundtrack is incredible, the level design is engaging and unique through all of the stages, and the progression through unlocking moves, learning what works, and honing your ability against the different enemy types never gets boring.

Though there are only five levels in the main story, the Arena section adds another nine stages that, while shorter (and downright claustrophobic in some cases), add on a considerable amount of playtime to a game that already had plenty of replay value.

On the whole, though it's a short experience overall to see all the content (I was able to perfect it in thirteen hours, although this may vary depending on personal skill and dedication to getting achievements), the crunchy visual feedback, ability to perform truly spectacular sequences at your own leisure, and the sheer amount of toying with the game that can be done through the modifier menu keeps me coming back.

This game is more or less what you make of it, which gets said about a lot of games where building can be a focus but I feel it's more true here than in other places. If you just want to be utilitarian and make things that will keep your crafting benches/villagers/stuff safe while you explore and whack bosses, you can do that. If you want to build something massive and ornate, you can do that too. Wholehearted recommend.

Hard to learn, hard to master, hard to enjoy, hard to put down. You won't like this game but you won't quit it either.
