If I could refund this game, I would. It's atrocious. I've tried it a few times and it's still awful.

Original Jan'14 Review: What's happened is this: They took a previously very successful game (Railroad Tycoon) and brought it into the modern age. At the same time, to make it more accessible, many complex features were removed and replaced with very basic ones, if any. Pathing is awful, hence the addition of a "pass through" feature, where a train blocked by another can slowly phase through it. Even on the more difficult levels, you can't really go wrong. A lot of the industry feels pointless, the maps are too small, and the AI is awful.

Revised Dec '17 review: SMR is a weird one. I've gotten a lot more into RTS games in the past few years and come to appreciate SMR for being an economic RTS, the most recent and successful exmaple being Offworld Trading Company. Taken in this light, this is an okay at best game. Disregard any sense of true rail efficiency and strive to play the game in the most effective way. Lots of direct routes, rather than sharing rail lines. I thoroughly enjoy OpenTTD, and for that reason, I find it very difficult to play SMR. Building multi track railways running dozens of services at once on OpenTTD is impossible on SMR. It has a lot of modernisation issues too, hence third party fixes, but it also generally doesn't hold up so well.

I'd now recommend going to play OpenTTD, for a very different rail management experience. Or, if you want an economic RTS, Offworld Trading Company is the only real choice.

I want to recommend it. I REALLY want to recommend it. But I just can't.

This game is incomplete. It's been out for months, and is still incomplete. The AI is littered full of bugs, the between turn "other faction" time is still ridiculous, and the units have been diminished.

Skirmishers in Rome 1 would carry two spears. Now, they carry roughly thirty each. Though this has made them significantly more useful, it's not realistic in the slightest. Further, and much to everyone's dismay, the God forsaken "Flaming Sticks of Death" are still present. Attacking some walls? No siege equipment? No worries, just throw some sticks at their gates and burn them down in seconds. That's unrealistic enough, but you carry on the assault after that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, you'll find the gates have an infinite amount of boiling oil in a nigh neverending stream of death. 5000 legions dead in 2 minutes flat. I guess that balances them out, but why they couldn't have forced you to make siege equipment AND limited oil instead is beyond me.

But that's just you attacking. Defending, you might as well just put your feet up. I've successfully defending against 10,000 angry gaul with just a few hundred dagger wielding untrained plebs. Why? Because the AI doesn't understand sieges. In fact, it becomes retarded at the first second of a siege. They actually patched it so that the AI can spawn with ladders to attack your walls, rather than simply blindly charging with Flaming Sticks of Death every time, but all that's changed is they now push the ladders to your wall before thinking "♥♥♥♥ climbing that ♥♥♥♥" and begin throwing Flaming Sticks of Death at your gates.

Oh, and the patches broke War Dogs. My favourite unit, which mowed down enemies, but for some reason glitched when the handlers were the other side of a settlement's walls to the dogs which could cause a game crashing bug. They patched it, and instead, the handlers now CHASE AFTER the dogs to engage the enemy too! I don't know how they can actually break something more in a patch.

The list goes on and on, many of the bugs are niggly little things (for example, siege weapons will 90% of the time reposition after ordering to attack someone, even though they already could perfectly well hit it).

I enjoy playing Rome. But it's too broken, and abusable. I've only got as far as I have in my game due to the broken AI, and it's unavoidable to encounter the broken AI. It's fun in the beginning, and many of the bugs are ignorable, but after just 10 turns it becomes blindingly obvious that this game is neither complete, fixed, or enjoyable in the long term. And the icing on the cake? It's not even realistic.

Final thought: They did add a patch which introduced the revolutionary mechanic that formation units will try and stay in formation. Shame that after so long, testudo is still broken, so raising your shield above your head actually increases the missile damage you take.

Neverending fun of lopping off body parts and screaming at archers because you chose to take throwing axes instead of a shield, this game is a fantastic challenge and well worth the money.
