No Man's Sky was a hugely polarizing game at launch. There's no question, there were some issues that people experienced – not the least being their own expectations being too hard to get by. I actually really enjoyed it; the leaked gameplay of what it was actually like was what I wanted. A very chill, laid-back, relaxing exploration game with creative graphics and just the slightest hint of terrain deformation.

Now it's quite a bit later, and Hello Games has released quite a bit of expansion and deepening of gameplay. Now there's an entire base construction game. Now there's quite a bit more complexity in the trade system. There's an entire mission architecture. There's a refinement to the control system in ships that I'm not entirely sure that I'm in favor of – but I'm in favor of the game.

That's the real secret: it's actually quite a good game. It's not a game about hunting and killing everything that you can find (though there is a fair amount of hunting and killing). It's not a game about constant pressure. It's still, by and large, a game about flying around, seeing new things, and interacting with the world in order that you can keep flying around and seeing new things.

If that's not the sort of thing you enjoy – and you know whether it is or not – this isn't a game for you. It was never going to be a game for you. That's okay. It's okay for things not to be for you.

The reader of this review knows if this is the sort of game they'll enjoy, and they should let the Internet lynch mob who always thinks they know better than you do what you should enjoy decide what you should enjoy.
