A fast-paced and unforgiving 2D platformer-shooter with 8-bit, pixel graphics.

The storyline is rather thin, but solid enough to relay to the player who you are and what you're doing. A stranded pilot on an alien planet and trying to not die, respectively.

The gameplay starts off nice and easy, but gradually picks up the pace, ramping up the difficulty exponentially. Apart from 2D platforming and shooting things, this game can very well be categorized as a rogue-like. With permanent death, unforgiving difficulty and a lot of randomized items to aid you in combat, fans of rogue-likes and fast-paced action alike will appreciate Risk of Rain.

There are 10 classes to be unlocked, each with 4 distinct and unique abilites. The variety allows for an amazing amount of play styles and strategies. Combined with the at times randomness of items and shrines to waste your money on, players will need to hone their skills and rely on luck as well, if they are to escape this hostile and indomitable planet.

A fun and light top-down, turn-based dungeon crawler.

The storyline is pretty straight-forward: an evil dude with a whole load of evil minions are in those dungeons; go nuts.

I recommend playing on the standard settings the first few times, I.e. normal difficulty with perma-death turned on. Due to the large amount of skills you can choose to start with (7 out of a total of 33, 43 with both DLC's), there's an almost infinite choice of characters to play, so experimentation is a must.

There isn't a whole lot of information in the game itself, a lot of potions have vague descriptions, and even most skill tooltips don't give full explanations. But I'd say that's hardly a flaw, there's lots of room for experimentation and exploration. And there's definitely no shame in checking the wiki pages for additional information, especially on mechanics such as crafting, brewing and quest-related things.

The array of different weapons, skills, character modifiers and monsters is impressive.

A fun and light action RPG game.

The storyline doesn't make a lot of sense, but it gets the job done; it gives you an excuse to decend lower and lower into caverns and dungeons, obliterating monsters and collecting magical loot.

You can mix up your game with a few different quest threads, parallel to the main quest. Don't expect too much (or too little) from these quests, the only thing you'll be doing is killing different kinds of monsters (which is fine).

The learning curve is very manageable, yet doesn't fail to challenge. If you're up for some intense and nerve-wrecking gaming, try the Hardcore mode, in which death is permanent.

The mechanics and available skills in the game are perhaps a bit simpler in comparison with games such as Diablo. In combination with its cartoonish graphics, Torchlight comes across as an easy-to-digest game, but does so very convincibly.

Well worth its price-tag. Or even better, get this game for free by pre-ordering Torchlight 2, a great deal.

A neat physics game that lets you control a flying robot swinging a gigantic hammer, to smash other robots swinging gigantic hammers. What more do you want?

The learning curve of Hammerfight is very steep, and you'll have to fiddle with the DPI settings for mouse sensitivity the first few times you play. But it's worth the trouble once you get the feel for it.

There's a nice storyline to the Solo game-mode, but it isn't intrusive. In some levels you'll have to protect an ally, or dodge an enemy while chained to a wall, weaponless, but most levels let you focus on mayhem and destruction. With unlockable modes such as Arena or Hammerball, you can fine-tune the gaming experience you want.

Smash the armor of your enemies with a heavy mace, or slice open exposed parts with a sharp axe or sword! Hammerfight offers an impressive and diverse arsenal, including ranged weapons such as the arquebus and throwing knives!

Definitely worth its low price.
