Doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Yes there's a ton of things you can buy with real money but it's a free game, what do you expect. There's also no PvP so what do you care if some random player spends hundreds of dollars to get everything unlocked straight away. There's a ton more satisfaction to get when you finally get that one piece drop you've been grinding for.

Definitely recommend trying it out, I'm having a blast playing it.

Amazing game. Played it as part of EA Play. And seeing as the full price is €20 I'd say wait for a sale. As usual I try to write my reviews once I'm completely done with the game (to give you guys a good estimate for the hours played).

The amount of hours your see here is the story combined with all the achievements. (Give or take with some idling)

- Pros

- The art style combined with the theme about being alone and facing your monsters and darkness makes for an amazing game with a great story. The transitions between "happy" and "darkness" are amazing, one moment you are casually jumping across rooftops or in your boat enjoying the view and the next you are swimming for your life with a racing heart.

- For the people who care about achievements it's all very do-able. There is a chapter select and you can come back for any achievement so none of them are missable.

- Graphics, this kind of style never gets old for me. It runs flawlessly it looks 'realistic' enough where it gets real scary and spooky at times. And it just overal is an amazing setting with great visuals.

- The controls. I would like to mention this one specifically as well since I saw a couple of reviews saying the controls are god-awful. I must say I played this one with a controller and it was all super intuitive and had no glitches or struggles at all.

- Cons

- Short. For a game being €20, 7 hours seems rather short. If you would just complete the story and ignore the achievements you could cut it down by another 1-2 hours.

- Voice-acting. This one stood out for me right away. It is kinda bad, I have nothing really more to add to this one, after a couple chapters you will get used to it and don't pay as much attention to it anymore.

TLDR; Defintely a must-play. Wait for discount though, it's a tad short.

I wanted to wait until I completed this game and see what this game has to offer before writing a review and not knowing about all different sides. I would classify this game in 3 'parts'

Part
Grade
Story
9/10
End-game content
6/10
Multiplayer
6/10

Story
Simply amazing. One of the better stories I have played. I had not played Red Dead Redemption 1 before and starting this game I was very confused by the area and the characters. But as you progress through the game you learn each character and their personal traits, you like and dislike them as they come and go. But boy does it suck you in. You are there from start to finish, and although I felt like your choices didn't matter at all in the end it does impact the way the game is played.

Look at dishonored for example, if you are playing as a psycho and murder every single person the city gets infested with rats. But if you play like a good guy the city will be better off. Red Dead Redemption 2 is like this, if you play honorable the world will notice and be nice to you, there are even a couple of missions locked behind this 'honor' level.

End-game content
This is where it went downhill for me personally. I like to get all the achievements in the games I play so I knew what I got myself into before starting. But this felt like an enormous grind. Finding all the animals and completing some of the challenges are 100% RNG based which makes it super frustrating.

All the collectibles add nothing to the game and you are not rewarded at all for completing them. And there are more than a 100 of them to find.

The missions from the story are replayable and have some degree of replayability to them since you are being 'graded' for them. But the missions itself don't offer much variaty in the way you can play them. It's not like hitman where you can complete a mission in 40 different ways. No, there are objectives which you complete in order and, again, some of them are completely RNG based, making going for gold medals extremely frustrating.

Other than the collectibles, studying all animals and completing the challenges... There is nothing. Not levels, gear/skills to unlock, areas to see, people to meet. Once you finish the story and have explored the map you are done.

Multiplayer
Honestly, this has been quite a let-down for me. The things they could've done with this, being cowboys in the wild west, Forming posses robbing banks, planning heists.

No. None of that. You can create a 'posse' but it's completely useless. Only the host can start missions for example. Other than these co-op missions there is literally nothing to do that is actually 'multiplayer'. Yes, there are a certain amount of 'roles' you can be. From bounty hunter to brewing your own moonshine to a collector. Sounds interesting right?

Nope. These roles are super empty. They are all fun for the first part but get completely stale after a couple hours at best.

- Bounty Hunter
Most fun personally, you find, track and capture bounties. Bringing them in alive for a better reward. There are also legendary bounties which are like actual missions with their own cutscene. Definitely the most enjoyable role out of the 5.

- Trader
You find, kill and collect animals and bring them to your camp and then deliver them all the way across the map.
Yep... That's it. You do this over, and over, and over.

- Collector
Quite enjoyable and definitely the best moneymaker. You find treasures hidden all over the map, ranging from flowers to coins to fossils and cigarette cards. You unlock a shovel and metal detector to increase your speed and range of items to find. But once again, very repetitive. There is literally nothing else than finding items in the map.

- Moonshiner
Glorified trader, you collect resources and brew moonshine to then sell it. The only plus side in this role is that it also has some 'missions' you can do, destroying your competitors brew or stealing their supplies. Also works in co-op.

- Naturalist
This one is on the same frustration level as trader, maybe even higher.. Instead of finding, tracking and killing animals, you find, track and... tranqualize/sedate them to take a sample which you then sell for some XP. Yep..

Also, just like moonshiner this one has its own missions where you find, track and sedate legendary animals... offering 0 variety.

Don't listen to all the negative reviews. If you buy the bundle and play the game you just have to log in with your EA account (like usual) and all your DLC is there. Nothing wrong with this bundle.

"Better with friends" says it all. A game with millions of different guns, multiple classes each with their own 3 skilltrees, lots of (secret) bosses, funny story and unforgetable characters this game is a must play for everyone who dares call him/herself a gamer.

To sum up all the negative reviews in one sentence: Yes there are microtransactions for lootboxes, and yes those lootboxes will make you "stronger".

But is this a reason for a "No", as recomendation? No, I don't think so.

Yes it's a bummer, and a cheap way to make us pay for stuff, but trust me, you don't need any of this to play the game, get all the achievements or play online, whatever your cup of tea may be.

It's a good improvement on shadow of mordor, it has a fun and new skilltree, an (debatable) interesting enough story to make you want to keep playing.

And the whole fortress building/defending/sieging is a whole lot of fun and refreshment in comparison with the previous game.

However, to be fair this gets old real quick. After a few times it's the same thing over and over just with different orcs with different weaknesses.

I recommend this game if you like a singleplayer game, want to get the achievements and have some fun.

- Is it worth 60 euros?...Eh..Not really.
- Is it fun? Yes, it is.
- Do the lootboxes and microtransations affect the game so much that it's unplayable for people who don't spend money? No, Not even one bit.
