The core of the game was fine since launch and the game keeps improving with each update.

The Good

  • Stealth is fun, massive improvement over the previous games. Maps are really well designed, with multiple paths to objectives, which can be done out of order. Unmasked stealth is a very nice option.
  • Loud gameplay is very fun. New specials do their job well. Gunplay is awesome. Armor is no longer as big of an issue as it was at launch.
  • Hybrid approach is much more viable on most heists, so stealthing half the heist is an option even with loud builds.
  • Hostage system is a lot better. They can run, push buttons, and revive you. They can be traded, used as shields, and stop enemies from using their powerful grenades and shotguns.
  • Movement is fluid and more grounded. Feels great.
  • There are mods, although there's no official support for them (yet?).
  • It's pretty.
  • Music is, as always in this franchise, excellent.
  • Story is more grounded and comprehensible thanks to cutscenes in-between heists.
  • The skill system is more intuitive and flexible than in PD2. Finding strong synergies between different skills is fun. The 3 buffs might seem boring or annoying at first, but once you can get used to them you can find all sorts of interesting builds.
  • Bots are tanky enough for Overkill.
  • Solo mode (which will become offline mode).
  • Progression is better than it was on launch.
  • Performance is great.
  • You can carry two bags!

The Bad

  • Bots are too dumb and serve as not much more than cover. I wish they could help with loot, revive each other, and that cloakers would not ignore them. I also wish they could be given simple orders like "stay here" or "follow me".
  • No peer2peer or hosting. Server browser is coming, though.
  • Lots of UI/QoL issues, but UI overhaul is coming.
  • No safehouse.
  • Preplaning is terrible and a straight down downgrade compared to PD2. Heist-specific favors cannot be bought but must be grinded by completing heists, and the favors you get are random. Most of them are not even that interesting or useful. There's no map.
  • Progression is still not that great. Gaining levels and skill points is nice and easy, true, but skills still have to be researched, and each weapon needs its own grind too before you can buy attachments.
  • While the storytelling improved, the story itself is underwhelming and boring. And the cutscenes are just slideshows.
  • RNG is constant between restarts in online mode, leading to seed abuse such as obtaining a code to a vault with mask and then restarting the heist to go straight for the vault and move tha bags unmasked, which is much easier.
  • You can't customize the escape van.
  • Lying bars instead of numbers for weapon stats. Important stats, such as armor piercing, are not even shown. Most attachments don't seem to make noticeable differences.
  • Most of the core game heists are underwhelming. Half of them have the dreaded WiFi circles objective. DLC heists are a lot better, but they are expensive.
  • Skills are not very well balanced currently. Most of them are borderline useless, and some of the skills are way too strong/convenient compared to others, such as almost the whole Transporter skill line or ammo funnel.
  • Replayability is not that great as there's not a lot of interesting RNG in heists. Changing builds, difficulties, using different weapons, strategies, etc. can keep it fresh for quite a bit though.

Overall, I like this game, I find it incredibly fun despite all its issues, which are being slowly addressed with each update.
