I can fully recommend this game after playing it for a couple hours. I was right at home from the start, the gameplay is very close to the last Insurgency which is great. Upon keeping the core gameplay that made the game so addictive in the first place, they also went with a great graphics engine (Unreal), despite the optimization issues, I can still recommend it. This is due to the fact that you can negate this with just a few tweaks that I made from looking at guides on Steam. However, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY NEED A DECENT PC. The old Insugency was on the Souce engine, which is easy to run. Moving to the Unreal engine will be a huge step in performance issues with those with older or less powerful hardware. To sum up my review; The game is great at it's core, but buyer beware of the technical issues.

I have played a lot of RTS games. Most of which are just top-down view of the battlefield. No RTS has has gone as far as making the whole world playable. Bringing Grand Strategy to RTS. HOI4 does a great job of doing this. While is may not be as flashy as most RTS, it makes up for it in gameplay, replayability, and overall fun.

The gameplay, as a whole, is really ovewrwhelming to the RTS novice. When I first played HOI4, I was terribad. I did not know anything about logistics or grand strategy. Luckily the tutorial makes it a bit easier for the average RTS newb a shot at grasping the basic mechanics. Most understanding of the meta game comes from playing mutiplayer and watching videos on Youtube. Overall, the gameplay is not that forgiving to the new RTS player but the tutorial does a good job of teaching the basics.

I know the most valuable asset to a gamer is their time. HOI4 is NOT a quickplay game. It can take a while to complete a world domination campaign. For me it took about 1 and a half weeks for me to dominate the Axis and Allies as the USA. The best part about spending time on the game though is the fact that, you can play as any nation. After you play the USA, you can give the German Reich or Italy a go, or something smaller like Tibet, Siam, Chile, etc. The point is, there is so much you can do within the limits of the game. Do not forget about the mods too. Those make the game playable for hundreds of hours for me.

Lastly, this game can be really fun. Just think, you are playing as Hitler and you and your friends are all in the Axis planning on your world dominion. This game can throw some real curve balls at you too, like a smaller nation rising to superpower status. There is much fun to be had on HOI4 and I hope that this tid bit of my thoughts on it were enough to convince you to buy the game.
