They obviously really loved swashbuckler movies, and it shows. A shame that it's so short, but hopefully there's some more content coming.

If you liked Rule the Waves 1 and 2 - and I did - then this is just an improvement on those games in every way.

For those that haven't played this series before: This is a very specialist game for people interested enough in naval history that they value the simulation aspect over the graphical aspect and can get excited over a text box talking about the calibre of naval rifles and speed in knots.

If this is you, then you'll love it at any price.

For everyone else, give it a chance on a sale if it piques your interest for a deep, long, and extremely nerdy naval simulator. There's a lot of great game here for those that give it a chance and can get past the lack of graphics. But if you're looking for dramatic graphics and fast-paced gameplay, this isn't for you.

Simply put, the game is nowhere near as bad as people say it is. It's essentially an attempt to remake Medieval Total War's Viking Invasion campaign for the modern age, and while perhaps it isn't quite as classic as that old campaign was for its time, it has interesting experiments in this game that make it different and unique from unmodded Total War titles.

What I will say, however, is that the replay value is low enough that you'll want to only get it on sale. The factions don't differ enough from each other to make replay very worthwhile, with the same type of units* but different campaign mechanics only, so pick it up on half price and enjoy it for what it is.

*And lots of people love Shogun 2 despite its similar lack of unit variety, so YMMV.

Honestly, this game is just an awful mobile game port. I love this genre, but hate this game and its implementation of it.

This game has such potential, but it's ruined by punishing economic and game design and the enormous time investment required even to log in and carry out one mission. I'm in love with the idea of this game, but the implementation leaves so much to be desired.

Good game, but not much has changed since Europa Universalis 3, except the much-superior multiplayer stability and connectivity. If you liked EU3, you'll like this one, but if EU3 contains everything you'd ever want in this game, you won't benefit from buying EU4 just yet.

Action movie simulator! Use the Bolo Patch for maximum hilarity.
