Excellent game loop. Clever weapon design that doesn't require ninja-reflexes while still delivering awesome destruction. A well curated gaming environment which encourages teamwork.

A solid iteration of the swarm shooter genre.

Also, Dwarves.

Old review: Customer support makes EA look good. Really user-hostile.

New review: Customer support is still terrible, and the Mog Station was designed by Satan's poorly paid intern. HOWEVER, the game is very enjoyable, once you get past the initial Main Story Quest.

Did you/do you love Smash Bros?
Bomberman?
Joust?

You will love this. You can play with up to three others on the same machine, a rarity today, your friends privately or the great unwashed masses.

It's rare to find games where actual player skill is important. And by skill I mean:

- ability to navigate virtual space, complete with slides and gliding jumps
- the ability to recognize and evaluate the importence of a wide variety of empowerment (weapons/items etc)
- the ability to duke/fake/anticipate your enemy
- knowing how to strike a winning pose and when to quack
- recognizing that turning the experience into a drinking game is not going to end well...

It's a beautifully refined gaming experience that will have you grinning like a loon as you twitch-fire off a shot with your musket, miss, explode the barrel you didn't even see and end up accidentally lobbing your grenade through the teleporter to win the match.

I've never been to Valhalla but if its anything like this, you can slap some chest hair on me and call me Viking.

Updated Review: Well, it's taken a fair while but Cyanide finally did what they should have done from the beginning: Ported Blood Bowl from a physical to digital format, while keeping true to the original game in every way.

As you'll be able to read from my original review, included below, when it was first launched BB2 was a good example of developers thinking they know better than years of playtesting and feedback, rules reviews and updates, combined with an inept understanding of how to provide tools that supported us, the players, in developing our teams as well as forming and running leagues.

Finally, I'm glad to say, they've gotten all the teams in there, they've reverted their changes to a few positionals, the league system is much more rugged and we can finally tweak and create teams. They've even managed to get the Free Camera in from BB1. Well done*.

There's still a few odditities. Mixed teams? Ok.. I guess someone must have asked for them.. and the A.I is still rubbish but good enough if you just want to relax or learn the very basics. And the matchmaking timer is on a 6 minute timer, so even if its just you and your buddy looking to play head-to-head, with nobody else in your league looking to play, you still have to wait 6 mintues until the system will pair you. And no, you can't just directly ping your friend to challenge them.

So, I can honestly say, this is currently the best looking - and most faithful digital incarnation of the Blood Bowl game we love. As a solo experience it falls short but Blood Bowl has always been about the multiplayer and, in this regard, BB2 foes the job.

Let's just hope they sort out the matchmaking timer and improve the A.I....

*(I've not had the chance to test the matchmaking system - will update when when I have)

Original Review: Another attempt. I'm not sure why those involved in converting GW titles believe they need to recreate a new experience, when folks already enjoy an existing one. Unless you believe digital gamers today are that different from their traditional gamer counterparts? No.

Guy and gals - the game's been designed and tested. All we want from you is some lovely visualisation (which this title does give) and for you to use our computers to aid our play. Team managment. Customizing models/painting. Organise leagues. Customise leagues. Learn to make the computer support and expand on the existing play experience. Make it work for us.

A virtual table-top for GW fun.

Instead we get poorly implemented league management tool. Feeble customisation options. No tools to aid play, such as a grid. And a terrible camera. That cannot be rotated. Because...?

Oh and some rule/skill changes. Let's fiddle with the player costs (Orc Blizter) and the human catchers's AV (Now 8). Because the years of itterative testing and feeback are obviously not as valued as the opinions of Cyanide's so-called game designers. Good call guys/gals.

Those lovely graphics? While certainly pretty, they suffer from form over function. If you were a fan of Chaos Edition's visual graphic changes as each player levelled (for example, Chaos Warriors would get more impressive armour) then tough luck. The models don't reflect the player's level - where once you could simply look at an opponents player and get an idea of its level/power, now a rookie looks the same as legend.

And racial cheerleaders? Ha! Humans for everyone! Yes, no more race-specific cheerleaders.

Finally, you can't choose to NOT use a skill - and some skills simply work differently to the actual game rules, that this mockery is meant to be representing. I'd like to believe it was another attempt at Cyanide trying to 'improve' the game, but its mostly probably just poor implementation.

I swear to the RNGods - whenever/whoever makes a Necromunda game, if they follow the logic of Cyanide and those chumps that did Mordheim, we'll have a narrative-driven multiplayer FPS shooter....

Edit: Update the info on the grid, which was added after launch. Added additional details on changes to orc/human, inabilty to rotate camera and no option to not use a skill.

Edit 2: Orc prices changes have been reverted. It seems they realised that their in-house data may not have matched over a decade of real-world play testing and development. Camera still locked.

// Sadly, see below for an update.

Great game. Tricky and rewarding. Chock full of meaningful choices, quality empowerment and just enough displacement to keep you on your toes.

Check the recommended specs, update your drivers, practice a little PC TLC then kick back and settle some grudges.

Now that's its shipped, just need CA to bombard us with DLC races and options - ideally some real multiplayer love, so that CA can cash in on a potentially healthy heifer of a cash cow. And well deserved to.

Update: Some positive changes of late. While they continue to develop, for the better, I shall be changing my vote to a recommendation/thumbs up. This game is a solid co-op experience, with enough toys and options to keep you busy tinkering with builds and setups. Cops & robbers. Good times.

Just be wary. And enjoy.

For the the records: Long story short: The developers are milking their playerbase with microtransactions, worming their way into our wallets, to acquire funds to developer other titles and projects.

You can google: "Payday 2 microtransactions" and read how things went from ok, to bad, to terrible.

If you are fed up with developers trying to weasel your money from you, do not support Overkill and do not buy this game.

And when some idiot says, ''Oh but you don't HAVE to buy x y z..", kindly give them a slap from the rest of us.

To you folks out there in gaming land, this is what you want - smart developers that refine and improve, providing you with ever better gaming experiences. It's like SCIENCE!

So, what do we have? Left 4 Dead, framed with a Warhammer context, and then some.

What's been added?

- gambling/unlock system, itemisation and customisation. In the good way, as oppossed to the ever popular 'milk your fanbase's playtime by hiding the goodies behind a time wall'. The core experience is delievered from the start, the rest is simply tinkering things to suit your playstyle.

- focus on melee. Blocking is an important part of play. Not everyone needs to get up close and personal and a shield isn't required to succeed, but oh yes does it help. If you were the type to pick up the fireaxe in L4D, damn everything else, and boldy take point, slaughtering all the deadheads that dared oppossed you, then you're gonna love this game.

- better signalling. You can tag specials for your team mates, helping you cooridinate your efforts. Likewise, the sound effects triggered before a special enemy attacks are clear and add to the atmosphere.

- which brings me to the specials. We've basically got the smoker (pack master), hunter (assassin), spitter (poisonwind globadier.. with less floor-splash, more in-your-face gas distortion and the tendency to self destruct on death), and tanks (rat ogres). Thankfully there's no jockey but we do get the awesome Storm Vermin, who have a habit of clumping up and giving you grief, thanks to their armour.

- Warhammer. Grimdark. Dirt. Rats. Cracks. Stains. It's all there. If you've ever wanted to virtually sniff the docks of an Imperial city, or stain your boots in its fetid sewers, or perhaps simply chill in a gloomy tavern with a very ugly bar tenders, then this is the game for you.

What are we missing?

- Sadly, we can't play as the Skaven.

- There's a crippling shortage of rednecks.

- The colour palette seems washed out, though I figure this is more to do with the confusing Gamma settings instructions. Personally, I wacked things down till they were gloomy and never could find the second symbol...

TL:DR

4 players. Ideally friends. Fighting hordes of ratmen. With axes, swords, fire, guns and bow. In a lavish gothic-fantasy setting.

Good fun. Bring friends!

Of course, it's not finished and needs a lot of work. And yet, rather than strengthen play with modern technology it feels like they've attempted to engage a new audience with camera tricks.

Rather than attempt to re-create the playstyle and assets of the real-life game, making use of the computer to resolve LOS issues and streamline warband book-keeping, the developers have opted for an awful 3rd person POV with a poorly implemented 'tactical map'.

Which is a real shame. The original game was a joy to play, along with Necromunda. All we needed was a virtual re-creation of the physical game, with all the advantages modern technology can offer. Instead, we have a game that seems like its trying to pretend its not based on an excellent board game.

While I hope things will improve I can't see the developers devianting from the core design choices already made - and those design choices have not improved gameplay but instead made it worse.
