TLDR: LEAVE NO DWARF BEHIND, BUY THIS FOR YOU AND YOUR 4 MATES

This game originally came out Q1 2018 and I decided to buy it on a whim. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 10 hours of the gameplay but decided to put it down for a while and wait for updates. Fast forward barely 11 months(?) later and can only say I am impressed with how far it’s come.
Deep Rock Galactic is one of the best fps co-op games I have played in years, evidenced by the smooth controls, fun yet challenging gameplay, easy to understand mechanics; all in conjunction with simple yet pleasing aesthetics. When I look at the game from a designer perspective I can see the pure passion and attention to detail that has been put into this game. Guns are fun to use, classes all have their uses and it’s easy to jump in and just play for a bit. There's no competitive gameplay so I can sit back and relax. That’s all I can say.

Pros
-Easy and fun gameplay
- few different modes to play
- lots and lots of cosmetics (no need to sell your soul)
- many different ways to customise your dwarf, armour, weapons etc.
- still in early access yet incredibly polished
- Much more to come
- For Carl!

Cons
- Had a recurring bug since day one where my mouse would get stuck and could move it but could shoot (have to unplug and re-plug it)
- $35 AUD hurts my soul as its borderline for friends right now so I am solo (few more updates and I reckon I can convince them)
- Very few Australian servers up sometimes during the day or late at night (public servers)
- A small community at the moment (huge potential to grow it)

Extra note: The developers themselves are extremely translucent with their roadmaps, their forthgoing updates and ideas they are throwing around. Also, from what I have heard they work well with feedback from consumers and take on board what little criticism they have received.

Minor spoiler on enemies and story:
TLDR: Don't trust the coffee mug, yourself, December and January fighting. Also is your shotty "your shotty" find out next week on current GOTY.

While a couple of days after realese I finish this game on both pc and ps4 for comparison and have to say it's one of the most amazing games I have played in a while. Even with its level glitches and loading issues in some areas towards the end of the game, along with a 40-50fps drop in the power plant; this game really had me sucked from the moment I played it. What originally started as a oh I have $60 for EB games and heaps of unused cards on steam quickly turned into two copies of this game and an enjoyable ride along the way.

Sound - The soundtrack in this game was given to me for free as a "preorder" bonus even though I never preordered. I think bethesda and Arkane can be very proud of whoever orchestrated such a wonderful 80's techno space vibe and made it into this game. A a future game designer and programmer, I would hope this sets a precedence amount games like this as to what sounds make a game.

sound - 10/10

Animation, Graphics and Gameplay - I decided to link these together for one reason only.....the fact you can turn into anything. Mind sound strange that I would link these together but some of you might understand why. Animation as a wjhole was very good, with only minor bugs showing through this well polished shield. Having developed my own games, I have a keen eye for very minor details such as the Nightmares sliding effect at the base of its feet when it walks and a small turret bug. The graphics weren't EA style, all graphics, no gameplay type of amazing but nonetheless suited the game very well. Nothing seemed out of place and everything within each scene melded together quite nicely. Mimics didn't stand out nor were they hard to find and many times throughout the game I jumped in shock as I was perusing an email or walking past a corridor. The sound queues are very hard to hear for the mimics sometimes and this made it even more tense. Gameplay was good, fundamentally the studio seemed to know exactly what they wanted and it shows. While an assault rifle or something would have been good, the whole scarce ammo and shotty/ pistol to save the day combo made the game more of a survival horror genre.

While generally I despise these types of games and ones were the enemies are bullet soakers, this game pulled it off quite well. The whole atmosphere of the ambient noise, the dead bodies, invisable creatures in two forms and not knowning whether your shotgun was actually "your shotgun" made the game so much more tense. The ending and after credits were a nice touch and made the game feel so much more "fuller" than other games.

Gameplay and animations - 9.5/10
Graphics - 8.2/10

Story - WOW! After playing throught the first time on PS4 and getting some nice endings, I decided to go for the non boom ending. The non boom ending was amazing and took nearly 4 hours to get to the bridge from the lobby despite the fact all I had to do was activate one stupid console. The level was glitched and took me 4 hours of fiddling around with save files to get it working again, but boy was that 5 mins enjoyable. This also applies to the cutscene at the end as well so stick around. Without going into too much detail as everyone has a different experience my final story is

Story - 9.3/10

Cons
- Weird nightmare sliding
- No December why did you do it January
-10/10 flesh eating cook
-strange level bug
-may not be enough for some people

Pros
-Story
-Gameplay
-Sounds
-Mimics
-Mimics
-That coffee mug
-Mimmmics
-???
-?????
- Everything else

11/10 this review

Start game as normal human boy, finish as giant multi-limbed testicle monster.

$20 US is expensive but floating testicle sim is worth.
