Not really worth it in it's current state. There is very very little variety and the variety that is there is shallow in itself. Differences among weapons are nominal making the already small number (less than 20) options feel like reskins of each other. Items all simply feel like stat buffs (again less than 20). And class changes through the nurturing system again, don't make significant enough changes. Every run feels like a slight variation on the last one you did; which is only furthered by the fact that every zone you fight the same 5-6 enemies that culminates in the same boss every time.

I'll keep an eye out because the basis for a good game is there, but they clearly need to put time into more weapons, items, classes, enemies, etc., if they want to stand with any other available rougelite/twinstick.

Runs like ♥♥♥♥. Laggy as ♥♥♥♥. Most lacking BF in terms of customization. Forgot the lessons they learned about vehicles in the past. Just go back and play the old ones since they made it easy to do.

Usually I do not write reviews of games. I downloaded this as a joke because steam recommeneded it to me and I thought it looked pretty bad. I was right, actually, it was probably one of the worst free FPS games ever. Made by a Russian 12 year old in his basement who once found out what a hitbox was, but soon forgot, asked his friend Nicoli to build him some maps that you could see all the way to the enemy spawns in. Nicoli said, "hey we can get some money from this game too" and then the little Russian boy implemented a pay to win weapon system where the only viable guns cost money. I am sad I got achievements for this game because it is now forever linked to my profile. Finally, there were raptors in the trailer, and I didn't even see one.

As the industry grows and creating games becomes more feasible for small time development teams amazing games spawn from nostalgia and peoples love for their past favorite games. Shovel Knight perfectly encapsulates the community wanting their retro game feel, while still maintaining a modern experience in flow and glitch-free gameplay. Pulling from the experiences of Mario 3, Zelda II, Megaman, Duck Tales, and other retros games Shovel Knight mixes these all in a pot and gives us something we couldn't experience on a NES by expanding on colors and gameplay that the system would not have allowed at the time. That's what makes Shovel Knight appeal to so many of us.

The game itself is fantastic. The action platforming and game design makes you feel like you are playing a Castlevania Megaman love child. Each zone has its own theme (a castle for king knight, a graveyard for spectar knight etc.) drawing from the best part of Megaman; its uniqueness. And the stage has hidden areas and challenge rooms giving you the exploratory feel of a Castlevania game. Your trek to the boss is challenging, but not frustrating and the game allows you to make things more difficult for yourself by rewarding you for destroying checkpoints. Defeating a stage always feels like a true accomplishment because the boss battles are hard and long fought. Once completed you are back to the overworld where you may be met with random encounters, challenging areas to test your skill, or fun banter with merchants and towns people. Combine that with masterful music and beautiful artstyle and you find almost no issue in the game.

The only issues one can bring up are sadly the game is too short, and the difficult cap may be high for those new to platformers. I myself had a hard time in many areas and I adore games like this. A lot of trail and error is involved, but with deligence any player should be able to finish the game. On the issue of the game being to short. I do not necessarily think that is a bad thing. A game as good as this is bound to leave a player wanting more and wanting more is what all games should leave you feeling. I do not hamper on Shovel Knight for being to short because it is my own selfishness that wants 20 more bosses and stages, endless music, and new and greater challenges.

Overall Shovel Knight is an easy 10/10 and I have taken my nostalgia goggles off even for this score. I may seem biased, but even if I didn't have history with the aforementioned games Shovel Knight would still be a fantastic piece on its own. For those new to platformers and this style Shovel Knight will be a refreshing challenge and a wonderful gameplay adventure. For lovers of the old platformers this is the game we have been waiting for; all your favorites wrapped up in a new intersting experience that will both satisfy your thirst for nostalgia and leave you begging for more.

This is the next game from SuperGiant Games; the developers of Bastion. The art style and music are incredibly similar in the two, but the gameplay is very different. Transistor feels like a character action game mixed with an RPG. With infinite combinations of different movesets Transistor will keep you playing although the story mode is only 6 hours. A New Game+ brings new challenge to the game allowing you to restart with harder enemies, but keeping your current levels allows for at least a second playthrough. The side challenges add time too they are difficult, but not frustrating and feel very rewarding when you finish them. The music and art is beautiful and the story is told to you through not only plot, but exploration as well. Transistor is a sold 8.5 out of 10 and deserves a twenty (or thirty for the amazing soundtrack) dollar purchase.
