The good -
- To the Moon only really has one saving grace, but it's a fundamentaly brilliant one - it has one of best plots in a video game in respect of truly engaging the player, making them care about the characters, keeping them involved while the story plays out, and feeling a range of emotions in between. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll have your favourite characters, and by the end you'll take away memories of a good story told well.

The bad -
- To the Moon is a very short game, clocking in at just over 2 hours, and no replay value to speak of. Apart from the memories you take away from it, or showing it to other people, there's very little reason to reinstall it once you've finished.
- The graphics are all sprite based, although being a game reputedly made on RPGMaker this isn't surprising, and resemble late era SNES games like Chrono Trigger and FFVI. While this is fine for older gamers who remember the days when these were the norm, it may grate with the younger generation. It's a fine medium for telling the story though.
- The game has no challenge whatsoever. Several puzzles crop up throughout the story but they require little thought, and it's impossible (or at least very difficult) to fail.

Summary -
To the Moon has a compelling story, great characters and excellent dialogue. There are plenty of genuinely funny moments both within the story and as lampshade hanging of other games, and some really touching moments that left this reviewer quite teary, especially towards the end. It's impossible to say much about the story without spoiling it, as the story needs to be seen as a whole in order to fully appreciate it, just let it be known that it makes the game.
Aside from a couple of very basic puzzles and action sequences placed sporadically throughout the game there's very little in the way of mechanics, and this unfortunately drags the game down and detracts from the overall fun. As a game it's impossible to give it a high mark, since it's essentially an interactive storybook with no mechanics. But (as repeated so many times) the story alone warrants you pick this game up in a sale, devote a couple of hours of your life to it, and come away feeling like you've seen a good film.
