14 years in the making.

People moaning about the price tag, this is a PC premier long-awaited by many. Emulation is cool and all but it isn't the real thing and they're not going to sell it to you for 20 quid.

This isn't a "gaming is dead" moment, quite the opposite as people have been asking for this for over a decade.

Bring on the mods

So far its been fun getting into the story mode. The ambience is great. All the survivors wandering around, talking and doing their own thing is something I haven't seen before. The story being set at the stage where people know something is going on, but not quite what, was a really good choice.

It would be cool if there wasn't an invisible wall preventing the zombies from breaching the campus. I thought everyone was screwed when I saw zombies destroying the barricades so I ran to the other side of the campus to loot; thinking the undead were pouring in on that side; biding my time until the place was overrun. But then I went back and realised there's an invisible wall which was a bit of a letdown. - Nevermind, the story and world open up later and allows the campus to be overrun.

The game looks good, better than PZ in many areas. The environments are extremely detailed too. Some UI elements and inventory UI could do with some touching up and re-scaling but other than that its been positive.

If there was a neutral option for review, I'd probably use it. So far, this remaster has done nothing to justify its existence.

The graphical upgrades are cool for the mall itself (characters not so much) but some areas, like outside in the park during certain times of day look terrible and washed out as they did in the trailers. In fact, a lot of areas look really washed out, I imagine some LUT mods and reshades will start popping up soon if they haven't already. They somehow couldn't replicate the almost perfect mirror reflections from the original either which is alarming.

Voice acting just doesn't hold a candle to the original. If you're a first-time DR player this wouldn't mean anything but for the ones who grew up on the original, I'm sure some will agree that a lot of the voices feel off and don't have the same effect.

I also can't get over what they did to Frank. He looks like Munch from Oddworld and is built like a vending machine.

The game is way too easy. The iconic prisoner bosses are somehow more idiotic than before. I also took the 50. cal from the prisoner's vehicle and used it alongside the firearm magazine to kill Adam the clown in 4 seconds (literally). He didn't even have a chance to move from his starting spot.

Escorting survivors is better, they don't run head-first into a zombie's clutches anymore. The suggestions given by survivors while escorting feels out of place though, like Capcom sprinkled some Dragon's Dogma 2 on top.

Zombies are also phasing in within view. Same goes for if you've just cleared an area, look away then look back again. Boom, zombies are back. Understandable for 2006, not really for 2024.

Just a few things I've picked up on in the 2 hours I've played so far. Giving it a positive review for now because Dead Rising in itself in a fun game and newcomers to the franchise is always a good thing. There's just some strange design choices, particularly with the characters and voice acting that make me shake my head.

I've waited 4 long years for this.

The PSN stuff can ♥♥♥♥ off but it isn't required for the story mode so its all good.

I can't recommend a game that is going to willingly block people from playing because they refuse to make an account that was purported to be entirely optional. The backlash was to be expected when you spring this requirement on people 3 months after release.

So far so good. If you enjoyed the first one this only gets better.

More weapons, more craftables, expanded rest area, great visuals and the atmosphere is still as ominous as ever.

Not much to complain about, some of the blood decals in the world look a little too bright red. The jitter as you stab a walker in the head is sadly still there, not game-breaking so I'll look past it.

Running on a Rift S - RX 7900 XTX with Ryzen 7 5800X, all ultra at 150% res. Feeling smooth no reprojection so far.

Visuals (excluding characters) are up there with RDR2. The world/atmosphere feels brilliant and only gets better once you hop on a broomstick.
